So...

What's the deal? Nobody calls back, nobody seems interested. We don't suck, we want to play.

What is the secret for getting a gig at Steamers? Do I need a special password?

As with pretty much any bar in town, if you haven't played there already, get on a bill with someone who has (and did well when they played) - Thu, 15 Jun 2006 12:13am

Just find out who's booked to play and ask them politely if you could open. My band Batteryhead played our first show at Steamer's... we had no demo, just politeness and cool. - Mon, 19 Jun 2006 5:52pm

or you dont play at steamers..its not that great..no crowd involvment, stage is tiny as hell. Go somewhere, where you can move around and have people standing not sitting drinking - Mon, 26 Jun 2006 6:46pm

Good call, steamers is for faggots. Give Logan's or Lucky a try. Much more receptive and supportive. - Mon, 26 Jun 2006 6:51pm

Do you always wear a Fish Bowl on your head? The level of ignorance you have just displayed is shocking. If you don't like a bar at least come up with a decent reason as to not go there. Calling Steamers a bar for "faggots" sounds like my 12 year old brother just slinging together a bunch of curse words (i.e. shitbumpissloserbastard). It really makes you look silly and childish. And, people are generally "supportive and receptive" to music that is "good" and that may be the root of your problem. - Tue, 27 Jun 2006 11:52am

No crowd involvement? You guys are retarded. I've never had that problem. I wonder why. Why don't you go to Steamer's and fuck yourselves, faggots. - Wed, 28 Jun 2006 7:23am Edited: Wed, 28 Jun 2006 7:26am

for someone with such a shitty band Mr brendan sure talk himself up. the reason you've never had a problem with lack of crowd involvement is because watching big muff play, is like watching a bunch of retards preform a musical, or watching chickens with their heads cut off.
wait a second, big who? big muff?, they sure went nowhere fast. are you faggots still around? maybe YOU and your group of short bus riders should go play hide the sausage at steamers. you dumb cunt.

Oh, and I suppose you are in an amazing band. So amazing that you can't get shows and that you have to post yourself as "anonymous". This message board is for people with real questions, not for slander of fellow musicians. Maybe you should also read up on local artists given that Brendan hasn't been a member of Big Muff for years now, not to mention that Big Muff hasn't even existed for years now. Brendan has also been (and still is) part of numerous other well-liked musical groups over the years and is a very well-respected member of the city's music community. I for one respect anyone who puts their efforts into making Victoria an entertaining city, whether it's to your taste or not is completely irrelevant. If your band (if you even have one) is really all that spectacular, then maybe you should look to your attitude as the reason for not booking any shows. Your band mates must be completely embarrassed by your immaturity and lack of professionalism. No wonder you're "anonymous"...Wait a sec; are you even old enough to go to Steamers? - Wed, 28 Jun 2006 4:32pm

Nice one, NH! I like your style, not having the balls to post under your real name and everything. Very creative indeed. And the comment about retards combined with spelling "perform" wrong is gold! Very well done. My concern is not whether or not you like my bands, or music. Of course that's a lot of bands to dislike, and you'll have your work cut out for you. My last post was simply my half-joking way of saying that you shouldn't slag a bar's patrons when it's not your scene. I don't get on here and bitch about the bars I don't like, because it's just a matter of taste (much like music). And why discourage up and coming musicians from booking anywhere in town? Why not try to play as many places as possible and see what works for your band? So anyway, NH, have a great time out there in the scene, I'm sure I won't see you, as you're of an intelligence way beyond Steamer's, the place where we know how to use commas properly.

As for Kyle, yes of course there's some BigMuff merch left, as we "sure went nowhere fast." Feel free to email me anytime.

As far as I know Andrew is still the man to talk to at Steamer's. Call him early and OFTEN. Go down there at lunch time and find him. (I know you like to sleep in but how bad do you want to play at Steamer's?) Trust me, he can't ignore you forever. SELL your band to him and he will most likely give you a shot. Remember, he gets many requests from many crappy bands all the time. Also, as others mentioned above, play elsewhere so you have something to bring to the table. ie: "We played Lucky and Logan's last month" Contact the regular bands at Steamer's (all the info is here on this site) and get an opening slot. If these bands have been at it for any length of time, they will be starving for new openers. Do good on a Wed. night and pretty soon you will get Fri or Sat. - Tue, 4 Jul 2006 8:24pm

ask yourself: why do I want to play at steamers: bad acoustics, despite great soundman simon; drunk people not teribly interested in anything but the most regurgitated of barmuzak; if you do happen to kill the gods and make a killing at the door, good luck collecting it all!
Better spend your time and energy selling John at Logan's on your music.
Final advice: when you're at venues, talk to the soundman - they usually exert tremendous influence in the club, and when you do play there they are part of the band, or at least you want them on your side so they make you sound good. Also, go to Steamers (or Logan's) open mic and play three songs and get a free beer. This is good cuz you can gauge whether you're ready or not, here I come... - Tue, 11 Jul 2006 10:41pm

Following this simple advice would save bands, booking agents, and talent buyers so much time we would probably have a cure for cancer, an end to poverty, and a car that runs on air in about two weeks. - Tue, 18 Jul 2006 11:26am
