So I got a Juno 60... I'm opening it up tonight to give it the canned air treatment & I was just wondering if anyone had any advice on things to look for/do.

The only problem it seems to have so far that gets under my skin is that it crackles when you play with the volume knob. Any ideas how I could fix this?

One more thing: Car wax on the panel - good idea, or severely misguided?

Thanks. - Mon, 3 Apr 2006 10:40am Edited: Mon, 3 Apr 2006 10:44am

man I would kill for a juno 60
I know they aren't expensive but I have little money
where'd you get it?

I can't offer advice butttt I do have the juno 60 manual in pdf form on my computer somewhere if you need it, or the settings for the original presets, or something - Mon, 3 Apr 2006 9:29pm Edited: Mon, 3 Apr 2006 9:30pm

Thanks Ty, but I've got everything I need (except for a damn DCB>MIDI adaptor!). I got it from a friend who's had it for over ten years... just sitting in his closet!

Old synths are funny... they're kind of like cars... you can find them for really cheap, or you can find them for insanely expensive.

It's a REALLY amazing synth - Tue, 4 Apr 2006 9:38am Edited: Tue, 4 Apr 2006 9:40am

I really like that one too. I had a 106 for a time but it didn't have the smooth stylings and sound of the Juno 60. - Tue, 4 Apr 2006 2:40pm Edited: Tue, 4 Apr 2006 2:41pm

Hey Box Drone - Congrats on picking up the J60. I love my 106, but the 60 sounds just that little bit more analog.

For your scratchy volume pot (or is it a slider on the 60?), I've had good luck working potentionmeters/sliders with some aerosol contact/head cleaner. Picked mine up at Radioshack (back when it used to be radioshack), and I find the only real trick is to get the red straw somewhere you can actually force the cleaner (it's alcohol-based) *into* the guts of the potentiometer/slider. Squirt some, run the knob/slider all the way back and forth on its travel a bunch of times, repeat til the action feels smooth, and let dry.

Not that I've tried it, but I would say car wax on the panel = bad news. Again, you can use alcohol or a mild cleanser to clean the panel with a soft cloth.

While you've got 'er open, just clean out the dust and make sure all the wiring and connections look good. If the synth is playing fine, there's nothing much to do besides that as preventative measures.

And don't stress about the MIDI->DCB converter. I'll bet for what you'd have to pay for one, you'll be dissapointed how little MIDI control it gives you over the synth (probably just note on/note off, no parameter control, and for sure no velocity). I find my analog synths are all about performance anyway, and playing off the character of each individual board makes it way more fun and interesting than running off a master board or sequencing the heck out of them would. My 106 has good MIDI implementation, but I never end up using it.

Hope you have fun with the synth!

It just seems to be the volume knob that has the scratchiness problem...

As for the Midi, note on off would do me just fine, and is somewhat necessary to my method of creation. I love to use analog for those fat arpeggiated basslines. But the big one is I need to synch the arpeggio with my other machines... it does do that right?

And yeah, I've been having doubts about the Car Wax thing... a little too risky. - Thu, 6 Apr 2006 1:21pm Edited: Thu, 6 Apr 2006 1:25pm

You could use the MIDI>DCB converter to feed the 60 programmed arpeggiated parts from another synth, sequencer, or computer. I don't remember if the 60 has a trigger input - Roland tended to be pretty good about making gear that 'talked' to their other gear - but if there is one, it may be a viable option for synching up the arpeggiator to other gear. I know my Poly6 has a TRIG IN, which you basically feed a high-level tempo signal (for example, from a drum machine, or a click track feed from your sequencer), and it will chase the tempo you're working at. - Fri, 7 Apr 2006 12:38am Edited: Fri, 7 Apr 2006 12:43am

Y'all are making me nostalgic.

First band (way back) was early techno/industrial. Used a Jupiter 6, Korg Poly6, Casio CZ101 (mini version of the 1000), and a Mirage.

Ahhhh... those were the days.

Otherwise, my advice is exactly the same. Contact cleaner. No wax.

There's an MD-8 on eBay right now, but they're looking for $200 US... - Fri, 7 Apr 2006 12:52am Edited: Fri, 7 Apr 2006 12:57am

Yeah, that's my fault. My first E-bay bid & I didn't know how it worked, so first bid I made doubled the price... DOH!

But yeah, Mic, I think it does have a trig input.. it has alot of weird patch inputs on tha back I don't quite understand. I was lucky enough to get the manual with it (although I guess you can download those from roland, eh?), so I should probably read through that & see what I can find out.

Thanks - Fri, 7 Apr 2006 9:31am Edited: Fri, 7 Apr 2006 9:33am

Sweet boiling jesus! According to the manual, it indeed will synch to a "pulse"! This little piece of information just saved me a good $300+! Thank you sir!!! - Fri, 7 Apr 2006 10:42am Edited: Fri, 7 Apr 2006 10:42am

Yeah, you might have to experiment a little. As I suggested, try feeding it a click track from your sequencer - you'll need to tweak the level going into the TRIG IN to get the synth to 'hear' it. Or try outputting click via MIDI to something that makes a more percussive sound, like a drum machine. You may also need to fiddle with the click's timebase to get the arpeggiater to synch up properly - have it count in 2/4, 6/8, or half/double tempos to get the speed right (for example, having your 90 bpm song counting out at 180 bpm). I'm afraid I haven't actually ever *tried* it with my P6, so these might be shots in the dark.

Most people make a mistake and spray in too much cleaner into the volume pot. 1) see any lint and crude where the spindle comes out of the turning bitz? Carefully pull it out with tweezers. If you can look under the panel, can you see where the 3 traces come out of the silver disk of the volume pot? If so, then spray in there 1/4 of a phtt! of cleaner using the red plastic tube. If it is a sealed volume pot then you need to spray down the spindle, with the tube on the line where the spindle meets the cover so that it pressures in. Then turn it 0-100% back and forth 10-15 times. Cleaner can make a real mess and can turn into goop that more dust sticks to making this worse so remeber less is more. Buy it at Long & McQuade in the DJ deparment Cramolin is a good lube, use deoxit for things that have been rusting in basements. A can of air is also useful. Have fun. Nice arpeg in the 60 and the polysix
Roland triggers usually like +5 to 10 volt peaks. - Mon, 10 Apr 2006 7:39pm Edited: Mon, 10 Apr 2006 7:50pm

Woah man, mega thanks for the detailed advice!

Anymore info about +5 to 10 volt spikes would be quite useful too, as all this DC & voltage stuff is going a bit over my head...

Apparently my Fantom has a DC wave sample in it someohwere, but I'm having a hard time locating it (i haven't had much time to look yet though) - Tue, 11 Apr 2006 9:54am Edited: Tue, 11 Apr 2006 9:55am
