Do you get a better deal if you trade something you have on lease than if you just traded in something you own?

Case in point: I have a Roland Fantom Xa, and I want to upgrade to either a Fantom X6 or an XR (rack). Am I better off paying my debt, selling the Xa privately & then buying the X6/R or would I do just as well to go in and trade up?

Thanks for any info. - Mon, 27 Mar 2006 1:31pm Edited: Mon, 27 Mar 2006 1:40pm

there are a lot of cool people that work at l&m. which is precisely why i don't trade in my gear there. because when a guy looks me in the eye and makes a completely assonine offer on said piece of gear, i begin to question the assumptions i have made regarding his coolness.

that said, i haven't tried to trade anything in that i have yet to pay for. maybe their policy is different on that.

get a price from them and then do some research. with so many free venues available through which to sell your gear, i think you'd be crazy to go down to l&m and have some kid offer you half of what it is worth. - Mon, 27 Mar 2006 2:35pm Edited: Mon, 27 Mar 2006 2:57pm

Agreed. But I heard someone say something about them simply charging a 're-stocking fee' for leased gear, so if that's the case, it would probably save me alot of unnecessary steps. - Mon, 27 Mar 2006 3:11pm Edited: Mon, 27 Mar 2006 3:13pm

Im pretty sure you only pay a restocking fee if you return a product you have bought within a few weeks.

I don't know, I just traded my fantom x6 straight over for nord modular g2x
I'm really not sure what they where thinking but, I left thinking "did I just rip off L&M" I feel like I got the best deal in that one. I really wish there was a good alternative to them, but until then, they will probably get my money.

Ok here's a bit of a rundown:

If you are financing gear you cannot sell the gear until it is paid off in full- that is what you signed when you filled out the contract...

However, if you are financing something and you wish to return/exchange, you will be charged a "restocking fee" which basically accounts for the time it is out of the store.

Restocking is 10% first month, 15% second month and 3% per month after that... there are exceptions to the return policy like print music, harmonicas, computers, software etc.

For trades:
Just think about when you're buying used gear... do you want to buy a used product that is the same price as a new one? no, you want to buy it around half price. L&M has to price the item so it will actually sell, and still allow enough room to warranty the product etc.

Make sense?

If you're not sure, call the store. If it's about something you've financed, ask for the credit department, and they can work it out.

Hope that helps... - Fri, 31 Mar 2006 2:00am Edited: Fri, 31 Mar 2006 2:13am

I dunno what it is about the victoria L&M, they have some staff that really know how to get under your skin and a lot of the manager/staff politics piss me off.

In Van though, its totally different. The staff is awesome! One guy set up my floyd Rose and fixed the intonation for the cost of the new strings he put on it. Another sold me 2 sets of bass strings at half price and gave me a deal on a rental just to be a nice guy!

So I'd say its SOME of the staff in vic and not the company that turns people off. However, trade ins never give you a good deal no matter where you go, espeacially if its a model they don't stock regularly. - Fri, 31 Mar 2006 11:50am Edited: Fri, 31 Mar 2006 12:02pm

I've never paid a restocking fee, and I've always got a decent price when trading something in. I recently traded in a keyboard that i was financing and i still had quite a lot of money to owe, and they just payed off what i owed and refunded me the rest of what was left of the price we agreed upon. They pretty much gave me the price I was wanting to sell it for privatly - Sun, 2 Apr 2006 12:25am Edited: Sun, 2 Apr 2006 12:27am

Here is my opinion. Try spending some money there. Then return and spend some more. Then if you dont get a deal on your trade-in's, bitch about it. 100% of the time, LandM has given me very good prices on all cash/credit/trade deals.

They work at LandM to pay bills. Even though LandM "swear" they dont work for commission, they still need to get the top dollar they can for gear, thats their JOB!

Here is my Customer Service storys at LandM....

I bought a 1200 watt Bassman with 8x10 cabinet. For 2 years i expressed I wasnt quite happy with it, and it kept going in for needed repairs. Fender was completely holding up to their warranty, however, after 2 years LandM said fuck this, gave me 100% refund, over 3,000$, and I bought Ampeg, and ended up paying 1800$ in an upgrade.

I bought a Yamaha Acoustic guitar for 1200$, it has one year warranty. 5 years later it cracked due to humidity i think. 100% refund. I bought the exact same guitar from them, plus a beautiful Strat.

I bought a Boss Drum machine for 550$. Traded it in on a 3,000$ purchase for 525$. Had it for 3 years. I paid 25$ to use a drum machine for 3 years.

Bought a Warwick bass for 3,000, had it 6 months, traded it in for something like 2,900$, then bought a 5,300$ Taylor.

I can go on and on. The principle is basic. If you are going to be spending more money, and they know that, they will treat you better. I hate hearing people who spend 500$ a year at LandM bitch about the service. When i shop there, i spend alot of money, buy alot, trade alot, and very rarely do i take up alot of their time. Why should they give the BEST deal to customers who dont give them the BEST deal.

Not one single musical friend of mine bitches about the service at LandM. Why? Cause they spend money there. The ones who dont, are usually the same ones who bitch about their cell phone's Company Service as well. Get my drift?

I think LandM gives the best deals in town on anything musical. Actually, i KNOW they do. As for pissing people off, everyone everywhere piss people off no matter where you go. - Sun, 2 Apr 2006 2:05pm Edited: Sun, 2 Apr 2006 2:22pm
