Just got my copy of 'Words...' today (in Canada, finally....) For those of you that know me (eg Shawn, haha :P) I hold this band in high regard. And so it goes...OH YES, Verdelet busts straight-out with Cacodaemon vocals, dissonant grooves, progressive elements....I dig ;) I also dig the thunderous/doomy movements of 'Seduced.' There are some odd sorts of what I consider to be 'dark-ethereal' elements reminiscent of Sonic Youth's 'Daydream Nation' on this album (eg - 'Shelter From the Sand,' I didn't expect that to be so bloody epic!!!) I was also pleased to hear Mendonca's spoken word/satanic invocations were not dismissed on 'Eyes of the Dawn'! I still have to say that the title track 'Words that go Unspoken' was the one that probably threw me aback the most, the clean vocals are a prominent highlight, but I didn't expect so many progressive changes throughout the song. The same could be said even more so for 'Intractable.' 'Seraphs and Silence' broke right back into the brutality with classic angel-raping lyrics and some very cool doomy/thrashy licks! 'The Penance' maintained the same intensity with a notch up on the speed/thrash elements!! 8-) The Epilougue 'Lex Talionis' was another dissonant outro, which ended the album appropriately.

Overall, I must say I didn't expect this album to be so experimental. 'Choronzon' is probably still my favorite album because it had a great balance of both the experimental elements and the brutality, but it is refreshing to see that a band can progress while maintaining its blackened theme. Better to expand with an album such as this than to create a clone of the previous album. Darkest hails to this fine piece of blackened-death metal!!! - Fri, 17 Feb 2006 5:37pm

Just picked this up the other day at Lyle's Place. I was really surprised at how progressive and diverse this disc was. Constant switches from grindcore to black metal to death metal to Opeth-style clean parts. Lots of doomy elements too. This is definitely Akercocke's most experimental and progressive album to date. There are some death/doomy technical parts as well which brought Immolation to mind.

To call this disc a non-humorous, satanic venture into the songwriting style and structure of Crotchduster would be pretty apt.

All in all, great release by a great band.
