I'm pretty sure the Saturday Night Live people had NO idea what was going to happen, thinking that it would be fun for a laugh, until they had what they thought was a near-riot on their hands. Notice how it cuts away at the end while they're still going. ha ha ha - Fri, 27 Jan 2006 11:46pm

Here's something interesting about that show (I did not know): (from: G4TV) John Belushi was a huge punk-rock fan and his favorite bands were the Dead Boys and Fear. Fear, Hollywood’s most notorious punk band in the early ‘80s, was lead by charismatic soon-to-be actor Lee Ving, who often taunted his audience with homophobic and racist taunts (all in "good fun," ya understand). Fear came on and did two things that made their seldom rerun performance defy all SNL logic: 1. After performing “I Don’t Care About You,” for their first song, they returned with an unheard-of-for-a-punk-band medley of their hits, the unholy trilogy of terror that is “Beef Bologna/New York's Alright If You Like Saxophones/Let's Have A War.” 2. They invited the punker-heavy crowd onstage to mosh… and they did. Lead by Belushi himself, the crowd stormed the stage with such ferocity they immediately trampled the band’s gear and unplugged several instruments. Within seconds, it was chaos… pure, unplanned, history-making chaos. Punk went public that day. - Sat, 28 Jan 2006 3:50pm

Yepp. Fear would never been on had Belushi not pushed for them to appear. I remember watching that night, was quite the sight. - Sat, 28 Jan 2006 9:24pm

I do remember this one !! LOL !
Not really my thing back then but yea gotta love the carnage , completely out of freaking control !
SNL back then would put on obscure and interesting acts on . I loved it when you don't know what would happen ! I can't stand the show now ... been a few good comics over the years ( not of late ) . But if the musical guests are the sign of interesting new music on there now ...fuck that shows in trouble . I remember a years ago or so, in the span of 4 weeks they had three pop acts on and I do believe one was blatantly, embarrassingly ,caught lip-syncing on stage . Only to be brought back the next year to do A SHOW....? WTF ?
I long for the great shows SNL used to have. A old crooner one week , a big named act the next and a obscure little known act the next . A freaking cornucopia of acts and styles . Just checkout the acts as they progress over the years here >>( http://www.answers.com/topic/list-of-saturday-night-live-hosts-and-musical-guests#wp-Season_1 ) It'll blow your mind . - Mon, 30 Jan 2006 1:42pm

Or what about the Queenhaters on SCTV in 1983?

With Martin Short singing, John Candy on drums, Joe Flaherty on guitar, and Eugene Levy and Andrea Martin on backing vocals.

I think the actual music was played by an old Toronto punk band called the Young Lions, but Martin Short was definitely singing...

I have a really rough audio mix of this song if anyone wants to hear it...

john belushi used to play "the record" at full volume in his dressing room. one day laurane newman couldn't deal with it anymore and went into his room and balled him out. he came around later and left a nice gift (can't remember what it was -- might have been his feear record) anyway she understood that was his way of apologizing.

simple however, still sweet.

see the rolling stone memorial to belushi short after his death which has testamonies by the snl crew for verification.

it's a nice long piece to read either way.

Oddly enough, Black Flag were also scheduled, ie the would have gone on during the second music break, also by Belushi's request. They were kicked out of the building before Fear even played. - Mon, 6 Feb 2006 11:20am

I have the SCTV Queenhaters skit on tape somewhere. I'll upload it to youtube when I get a chance and post the link here. The best part about that skit is that cast members play punks in the band and also PO'd audience members in the same scene! Hilarious! - Wed, 8 Feb 2006 10:48pm

Not my clip, I've got the full skit, wherever it is, with Eugene Levy introducing and then the audience complaining about it, which is even funnier than the band. - Sat, 5 Aug 2006 10:55am
