I've been listening non-stop to an, um, 'advance copy' of the new Self Righteous compilation all the hub hub's been about. I can't stop. This disc is weird, and yes, very wonderful. I think what sets it apart from most comps is that it's a diverse mix of stuff, all interesting. Most comps are just, well, tiring. There's usually only a couple of decent songs. But the musicians here have each recorded pieces that truly represent themselves - This Is Who We ARE!- not just rejected takes or songs from past albums or whatever.

If you are in a band in Vic or care about music here, you should get this album.

Now I must go and rest up for the epic 3-day cd release party, bound to be a long, lost weekend of rawking, liver damage and good - but fuzzy - memories. - Fri, 13 Jan 2006 12:17am

I got my copy this evening at the first Cavalcade gig, what a deal. I hope everyone reading this plans to get it. It's worth it, there's a Dirty track on there, and I'm still waiting for there album to be released. There's also tracks on there from Switchblade Valentines and Carolyn Mark, thumbs up!!! - Sat, 14 Jan 2006 12:26am

This album is so solid. I got my copy this weekend, and holy christ is it good. The Dirty track is sooo good, especially considering it's a cover of a David Chenery song. - Tue, 17 Jan 2006 8:24am

I still say my favorite The Dirty track had to be Anti-Conceivable, even though apparently the band didn't write it, I could of sworn I grabbed it from the bands website. - Tue, 17 Jan 2006 4:02pm

Great work by the Self Righteous crew for pulling it all together - Myke Hall especially for all his recording/engineering/mastering. The portable studio is great!

Griphin - That song you're talking about is an older tune we wrote that was mis-labelled as Anti-Conceivable, but was actually called... something else. I can't remember what. We've got a better version of it somewhere that I'll make sure you get ahold of when we locate it. - Tue, 17 Jan 2006 5:46pm

Oh... Ok, fer a sec there, I didn't think it was you guys. It's called Something Else? I like the name Anti-Conceivable, hey you guys planning on putting it onto the album once you've finished recording?!? That would be awesome to find on it. Thanks for the music and info!

Knob Gobbler: What is Calvacade of the Scars? A professional looking CD with a buncha wierd bands like David P. Smith on it. I like the look of the CD, K? - Tue, 17 Jan 2006 8:14pm

I have to agree with Kyle, kudos to the Self Righteous crew and Myke Hall for stopping by to record us on a Sunday afternoon. It's amazing how quick we recorded Dead Birds for the compilation and hopefully we'll get to record with Myke again, as we have been busy working on some new material.

Griph, and anyone else, feel free to check out the Dirty on MySpace http://www.myspace.com/thedirty as there's some tunes and pics up there.

It's nice to know that people are digging our rendition of David Chenery's great song. And I'm hoping that we'll see more stupendous stuff from Self Righteous Records in the new year.

~cheers~

hahaha it's #1 at cfuv because we love to reuse compilations for our chart release content, we love to combine chart releases and canadian content, and we love to promote local music.

but yeah, awesome compilation. weird that it came out pretty much the same time as the Aaargh! compilation. especially since there are a handful of bands on both compilations. I would say to compare the two together I prefer Aaargh!, but this has some cool tracks on it. I like the Pequod track. I've seen Pequod play a couple shows and, while I didn't get immediately attracted to their sound, somehow I STILL have their songs stuck in my head. I enjoyed the one on this compilation. Yay for Hank and Lily, and Chet, overall I like this compilation. - Thu, 23 Feb 2006 4:18am

Yeah - I think it was a pretty good coincidence that benefits all of the artists, and listening to the two of them, it's really is like apples and oranges (cavalcade is definitly more rootsy) so I think everybody should grab a copy of both (tsk) - As for the Aaargh Compilation, Joey and Co. have done a fantastic job and he deserves a lot of credit and gratitude giving a voice to so many bands that would otherwise not be heard. I think it's really an exciting time for Victoria's local scene and these CDs really reflect that.

I went to Ditch because I was going to buy a copy of Cavalcade of the Scars and a copy of the Arggh! compilation. I looked at them, then I put them back on the shelf- know why?

BECAUSE I DON'T THINK IT'S RIGHT HOW YOU EXCLUDED SOME OF THE BEST BANDS AND ARTISTS IN VICTORIA!

Conspicuously absent are: Jeffrey Sez, King Bong, SuperNova, Jell etc etc too many others to even mention

YOU GUYS ARE INDIE SNOBS AND ASSHOLES!

you don't even know who i am but i know who you are and i hate you in my sleep and also all day long.

I can't stand snobs who think they control everything with their trendy haircuts and silly outfits. I like basic outfits, comfy shoes, and cute hairstyles that are traditional and modest. - Sun, 2 Apr 2006 8:21pm Edited: Sun, 2 Apr 2006 8:28pm

Yeah, ha ha ha.

Laugh all you want, guys, I don't give a hoot. The fact is, you only laugh because you know it's true... Like, sorry if I like some bands that actually want to be successful instead of floundering in a puddle of indie snot. Honestly, I'VE NEVER EVEN HEARD OF HALF THE PEOPLE ON THE CD! HAVE THEY EVEN PLAYED ONE SHOW IN TOWN, OR ARE THEY JUST FRIENDS WITH THE PEOPLE WHO MADE THE CD? OR DO THEY JUST HAVE COOL HAIRCUTS AND TRENDY SHIRTS, SO YOU GAVE THEM A GUITAR AND PUT THEM ON THE CD?

I'm sorry, but I like catchy tunes. Catchy tunes that could be on MAINSTREAM RADIO. I like Hank and Lily, but who the hell are half the other people on the CD? A bunch of self-congratulatory indie assholes and snobs, that's who. GO SUCK AN EGG! - Mon, 3 Apr 2006 8:17pm Edited: Mon, 3 Apr 2006 8:23pm

I know all but one or two of the bands on the Cavalcade of Scars. They all play in town and out of town consistently. Some have toured as far away as Europe. That's across the sea.

You are perfectly welcome to listen to whatever you want, but your lack of attention to what is happening in your immediate surroundings does not equal failure on the part of those you ignore.

And yes, I am an asshole and a snob. Generally, I wouldn't stoop to replying to a message from one of the great unwashed, which you've made apparent you are, but sometimes we do these 'community service' kinds of things, you know, for the less fortunate. - Thu, 6 Apr 2006 1:15pm Edited: Thu, 6 Apr 2006 1:22pm

G-Man, with all due respect, I probably know more than you do about your immediate surroundings, AND I PROBABLY HAVE MORE IN MY BANK ACCOUNT!

Thanks for the permission, but I already know that I'm welcome to listen to whatever I want. I also know where Europe is- it's that country beside Russia. So what if you know all the bands on the CD? SO THE FUCK WHAT?! YOU THINK THAT MAKES YOU BETTER THAN ME?! JUST BECAUSE YOU HAVE A SPECIAL HAIRCUT?

I beg to differ, Gman. I could beat you in so many different kinds of competitions it'd make your head spin. I bet you couldn't name all the bands that I can name. I bet I could name more bands than you in a band-naming competition, and I could probably name more songs in a song-naming competition.

Oh, and GREAT UNWASHED?! So you're saying I don't wash my hair and private parts? Yeah right. I wash them almost every day, and I get my significant other to wash all the parts I can't reach so I'm completely clean. I could probably have a shower and get ready for work faster than you. You bet your life I could.

Gman, go suck an egg. Just because I said Cavalcade of the Scars doesn't rock my world doesn't mean I don't have good taste in music, or that I don't know what's going on around me. Go ahead and think you're better than me. I don't really give a smeg. Honestly, I don't care. Really.

YOU'RE NOT BETTER THAN ME YOU SON OF A BITCH! HOW DARE YOU SAY YOU'RE BETTER THAN ME?! FUCK YOU, GMAN! FUCK YOU! - Thu, 6 Apr 2006 10:25pm Edited: Thu, 6 Apr 2006 10:49pm
