That song, as well as the rest of his debut Waiting for My Rocket to Come, introduced Mraz as a funny, street-savvy artist able to mix warm folk melodies with agile hip-hop beats. Mr. A-Z, his new album, represents a further honing of the young Virginian's sound. This time working with legendary producer Steve Lillywhite, Mraz has crafted a collection of 12 songs that reflect on his recent success both introspectively and satirically. "Wordplay," for instance, is practically a parody of what a first single should sound like, yet it has a pop velocity and soft centre that is irresistible. The rest of the disc mixes multiple genres, grooves, styles and soundscapes, including the psychedelic "Life is Wonderful." Live, Jason Mraz and his band are engaging, groove-oriented and wonderfully energetic, turning whatever venue they play into Party Central.
