Check this out... Jeremy Baker who does the evening shift on The Zone has started a new Podcast which is avaliable on the Zone's website. He plans to support local artists, and asked me if I could donate music (local of course) and any tales of what happened for the show to support my Victoria Demo Restoration Projekt. Well sorta, at first he had a good idea (I guess Jeremy wanted to mention about bands past and any tales I had), but I told him that to get some info on bands past he should contact people who actually recorded the demos, such as Garry Brainless and Scott Henderson to get the actual tale, after that he wasn't as interested, go figure. But yeah, check it out, the station is supporting local talent (if it sounds professional I think they'll support it, good luck playing my crummy copies from tape on the show). But at least my copy of House of Commons rock!!! Peace... - Tue, 13 Sep 2005 2:12pm

Hey Jeremy. Yeah I listened to the show, and it sounded great! Thanks for posting the track list, I was gonna ask you about that. I have some ideas for the show, I'll send them to ya thru E-Mail. Now if I had a choice on what gets played... :)

Sweathogs - "Dank" (CD: "Sex With Everything A Victoria Compilation")
Micky Christ - "Bullshit Talk" (CD: "Sex With Nothing Punk-Rock Compilation")
Clusterfux - "Keep Me Mellow" (CD: "Sex With Everything A Victoris Comp."
Drunktanx - "Boats" (CD: "Sex With Everything A Victoria Comp.")
Dayglo Abortions - "Vince Kneel" (CD: "Holy Shiiite")
NoMeansNo - "Paradise" (CD: "Sex Mad and YouKillMe")

Mind you, this is a quickly thrown together list. But wait a sec, it's a podcast related to a radio station, so no swearing. Anyhow, this is just an idea. Or perhaps do shows on artists or people locally, such as shows on: Dayglo Abortions, Micky Christ, Garry Brainless, Scott Henderson, and those that are not with us anymore, for instance. - Tue, 13 Sep 2005 8:22pm

aCk... I was just about to post that track listing actually. One correction to be made from the show, I only wish I had Patriot on Vinyl, instead the track came from a tape copy supplied by Jason Flower (I think). I'd probably make a better copy of the EP if I had the vinyl (hopefully I can find a copy in mint shape, the cleaner the source the better the copy). Also, be listening for the blooper at the end of the show :) No problem about the track Jeremy, hey did you get a chance to listen to the CD I dropped off?!? - Tue, 4 Oct 2005 11:24am

yeah Gripin, there were some great picks on there. I like the older stuff... that HOC track is killer. Maybe I can track down Dayglo and they can give me permission to spin the song you sent me.

I also have some older-ish Explosive Rage Disorder and Meatlocker 7... maybe I can get them to give their OK to spin it on the podcast.

Next week's show will feature Tristan from theset... - Tue, 4 Oct 2005 3:45pm

Hey there. If you need to talk with the Dayglo's, Bonehead runs Old Nicks on Johnson street, I'm sure he wouldn't mind. You might want to play a track from the new Explosive Rage Disorder CD "The Strong Violent Type", either Derailed or Watch It Drown (I think either song they did a video for, not sure). Meatlocker Seven have released a 4 track EP since "The Biological Mechanism of Hate" came out, called "Depression Earth EP". I'm impartial to "Burnt at Both Ends" from the EP, of course "Systemic" from Biological Mechanism they did a video for. What an awesome CD. I'll be looking forward to the show as always. - Tue, 4 Oct 2005 4:52pm

Jeremy, I am not familiar with broadcast laws governing podcasts, and I'm just curious as to why you need to obtain the artists permission before playing their stuff? I play all kinds of local artists on my show in Nanaimo (this is a radio show, and is not a podcast) and I'm not required to get anybody's permission. How's it work? - Thu, 6 Oct 2005 10:27am

You don't need to seek permission to play music to a larger audience although you do need to pay royalties. Nobody is goin g to give a fuck for a podcast though.. that is unless it gets played all over the world. The local bands would almost certainly agree to waive royalties for exposure mind you. Frazer's radio station already pays which is why they don't ask for permission.. as does the Zone but not for things like the podcast. I think they are just being careful.

The podcasts are excellent by the way. Thanks. - Thu, 6 Oct 2005 10:25pm

I thought about it, but I really can't do anything unless I spend extra money and buy a mic system as well as a soundboard to make it sound pro. Jeremy is doing an awesome job in regards to coverage of local bands, so doing another show seems kinda pointless. One day I'll be on Capital Rock City, I still need to work on my speech first. - Fri, 7 Oct 2005 9:08am

Frazer, your radio station in Nanaimo pays SOCAN fees so you can play whatever on the radio. CFUV pays fees, The Zone pays fees (its a different rate for Commercial and NonComm stations). I think like four times a year Dave Grohl gets like a trillion dollars. Tyson from Moneyshot told me he got $100. I'd be interested to know if the Armchair Cynics have recieved any money yet... Adam you floating around here?

Podcasts are not covered by SOCAN and the law is a little sketchy, so to be safe, I just ask the bands if its OK to USE their music for MY show. So far every band and every music label has said yes. I have asked permission from MINT, Boompa and SubPop. If one day CRC ends up on the radio (and I hope it does) make sure you have registered your music with SOCAN... not that it'll be a lot of money, or any, but you never know.

Podcasting is pretty fun and fairly easy. So if you got the bug to play radio DJ, go nuts, just ask the bands for the music. Smaller labels and indies are generally into it.

Thank you to everyone who has downloaded the show so far and if you got friends outside of Victoira, let them know about it so they can check out some bands from our part of the planet.

If you are in a band and want to come on the show like Machina did this week, you'll need to email me at [email protected] and set up a day. I produce the shows Monday night at 8PM. Next week is the theset's Dean & Tristan and then I think Griphin is going to co-host the week after. - Fri, 7 Oct 2005 11:36am

DrunkTank?!? I don't remember bringing that in. I however did bring in all that music from last week. You can thank Dustin for lending me "Tales of Numbness and Bliss" so I could copy it from tape to computer, I felt bad cause when I played the song at the station I found it had a few glitches which I didn't hear when I originally dubbed it. As to the radio playing certain types of music, I think it's more of a question of the sound of the music. It's sorta like trying to get MuchGype to play your bands video on Coast to Coast, if it ain't up to their standards (whatever they are) they don't play the video. Just ask Rod Iron Haulers about that. - Tue, 25 Oct 2005 10:47pm

Jeremy seems like a great guy, and i'm super excited he's doing this for the bands here...the talent is really coming into its own on the island. the shows shoot up at midnight or 12:01 or something... and yes, he taught me how to upload them all by myself, like a grown up :-)

Next, I am going to learn to add chapters and pictures.

Then maybe a Vodcast... any bands got videos and anyone know how to do that? Maybe that would make a good show. - Tue, 7 Mar 2006 5:42pm

Way to go Jeremy, it proves that not all DJs are old skewl! It's easy to learn web programming, just study how your webdude programs the website, but use lots of other websites for examples if your stuck trying to get the website to do what you want. This is how I learned how to program a website myself. Pictures are easy, IMG SRC="{location of picture and filename, but if there in the same directory just filename.ext}", remember that the shorter the filename is, the faster the image will load up. A vodcast? I'll look at a few examples which support VODCast and post an example here. At the moment, I know about as much as you do. - Tue, 7 Mar 2006 6:56pm Edited: Tue, 7 Mar 2006 7:03pm
