While the Planets helped add jazz to the hip-hop lexicon Ladybug was showing that a woman didn't have to shout and cuss to be taken seriously as a rapper. During the Digable Planets' lengthy sabbatical (which culminated in a recent reunion tour that brought out old and new fans alike to once again appreciate the brilliance of that band) Mecca has been searching for the right showcase for her talents. With Trip the Light Fantastic, her solo debut, she has found it. At once witty and sensuous, spiritually alive but not blind to the problems of urban life, Trip the Light Fantastic explodes with Ladybug Mecca's talents as a singer, writer, rapper and producer. Full of love, brightness and optimism, the record melds breezy Afro-Brazilian rhythms with hip-hop beats, and fiery rock riffs with post-bop blue notes. It's a beguiling, utterly charming record from an artist who is just coming into her own.
