The young Orange County band, which recorded its 1999 debut Sounding the Seventh Trumpet when its members were just 18 years old, grew up listening to Pantera, Megadeath, Metallica and Slayer as well. Those influences show on City of Evil, the group's masterful new album (and first for a major label, Warner). But listeners will also hear pop hooks and a sense of humour snaking its way between themes of loneliness, despair and apocalypse. After two critically acclaimed independent releases that have brought Avenged Sevenfold a cult-like following and sold-out shows, the band is taking its colourful, energetic metalcore sound to the world. Saosin (pronounced "Say-ocean" and taken from a Chinese proverb meaning "small heart") is known for its powerful performances. Frontman Cove Reber leads the audience in a frenzied, sweaty moshpit and members routinely crowd-surf. Drummer Alex Rodriguez is a dynamo that powers the five-piece to ever greater, ever-more-intense heights. The band's dark, melodic feel can be heard on the recently-released released Capitol EP Bury Your Head, which features screaming and hardcore breakdowns as well as awe-inspiring harmonies and back-up vocals. Don't be surprised if, by the time they leave the stage, you're chanting along with the rest of the crowd: "SAO-SIN, SAO-SIN." Death for Life, the latest from Death by Stereo, balances chaos and consciousness, extremes of hardcore and fluid metal riffs. A new sound and dynamic for these veterans of the SoCal punk scene, Death for Life is even heavier than breakthrough releases like If Looks Could Kill, I'd Watch You Die. The Epitaph group's hardcore screamo / metalcore has earned it legions of fans and made it an exciting draw in punk clubs worldwide.
