It sounds like a movie script; a heavy metal band loses lead singer after over twenty years, hires the frontman from a tribute act, then reunites with original singer for a critically acclaimed comeback album. Stranger than fiction? Absolutely. But it's part of the story behind Judas Priest, one of the longest-running and most influential heavy metal bands ever.

Since forming in Birmingham, England in the early '70s, Judas Priest is responsible for the British New Wave of metal that gave rise to bands like Def Leppard, while the group's penchant for speed and volume also laid the groundwork for speed and death metal. Decked out in leather and chains, the quintet lived up to their tough guy image with records like Stained Class (1978) and Hell Bent for Leather, the latter of which broke the band in the U.S. in 1979. Singles such as "Breaking the Law," "Living After Midnight" and "You've Got Another Thing Comin'" are among the biggest metal crossover hits in history, bringing new fans to the genre and opening up the charts to later acts like Slayer and Metallica.

Angel of Retribution, which debuted at #13 on the Billboard album chart and is Judas Priest's 16th studio album, reunites the definitive lineup of vocalist Rob Halford, guitarists Glenn Tipton and K. K. Downing, bassist Ian Hill and drummer Scott Travis. Playboy magazine called it "one of the best head-banging albums in years and one of the best Priest records of all time," while Rolling Stone said it's "an album that holds up well to Priest's strongest, most sustained recordings." Billboard dubbed it "classic Priest" and Sound & Vision magazine noted "the Metal Gods sound revitalized." That's certainly been the case during the band's stint on Ozzfest last year and during its current 2005 world tour. That tour began in February and took the band across Europe and to Japan, where the group blew the roof off the Budokan in Tokyo on its last two dates. A new leg once again brings the band's classic sound to North American metal fans hungry for a taste of British steel
