Though tagged as country, the group has consistently combined pop, Latin, torch, roots rock and R & B and earned Grammy, CMA and ACM awards as well as gold and platinum sales for their vision. Through it all, singer Raul Malo's magnificent voice, which often earns comparisons to Roy Orbison's, has been one of the most beautiful in the popular music landscape. A five-year break in the Mavericks' career (culminating in one of the group's best albums, a self-titled 2003 release) allowed Malo to pursue a parallel solo career. Performing in and around Nashville, recording solo albums and producing artists as varied as Dominic Chianese (Uncle Junior on The Sopranos), K.T. Oslin and Rick Trevino, Malo has kept alive the same spirit of eclecticism that informs the Mavericks. Original tunes, old and new Spanish songs, and folk and pop standards by the likes of Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, Gordon Lightfoot and the Louvin Brothers have all gotten the Malo treatment, whether in live performance or on records like Today or The Nashville Acoustic Sessions.
