But it wasn't just the unorthodox lineup of the Ventura by way of Jacksonville quintet, which includes a violin player. It was also the group's keen songwriting talent, its knack for powerful hooks, and singer Ryan Key's honest lyrics. Listening to 2003's platinum selling Ocean Avenue, the group's fifth album, it's easy to see why Yellowcard has connected with millions of listeners throughout the world. Universal themes of self empowerment and self awareness and songs about youthful idealism giving way to maturity and the divergence of friends' lives have all played a part in making the group one of the top names on the Warped Tour as well as on their own. A hard touring act that plays upwards of 200 shows a year, many of them all ages; Yellowcard's powerhouse live performance is captured on a recently released DVD, "Beyond Ocean Avenue".
