When someone close to you dies during the recording of a record it's bound to have an effect. But what's amazing about Built by Blood is that even in its darkest moments the record manages to rise above the circumstances that gave it life and become a cathartic, life-affirming record. By turns heavy and soft, light and dark, screaming and singing, rhythmic and pounding, Built By Blood is more than a record, it's a very personal document about loss and recovery, life and death, love and hate. You can hear it in the pulsing groove of "Legends Die," the disc's lead-off track, and throughout the record as the members of Bleed the Dream work through their pain in the only way know how-cathartic riffs, blood-curdling screams and yearning vocals. Veterans of the Warped Tour ('03 and '04), Yellowcard tour mates and Warcon Records act, Bleed the Dream has learned the hard way the importance of living every moment and appreciating what you have, and it shows in the dramatic, charged Built by Blood and the group's explosive live shows. For which, sadly, drummer Scott Gottlieb-who played on the record despite his leukemia-will not be joining them. He passed away in April of this year.
