moron User Info... | Hey Livevic mods, any chance of getting the genre listings updated to include "noise" and "industrial" for choices when you list a show? "DJ / electronic" doesn't cut it nor does "other" really. Cheers http://industrial.org - Mon, 20 Jun 2005 8:33am
The Box Drone User Info... | Amen, I'd really like to see something like synth-pop, or just electro-pop or electro-rock or... I dunno. I feel your pain, even if my wound is in a different place. Trying to pigeonhole myself into retartedly specific genres on music sites has been plagueing me for years... I don't make fucking 'darkwave', I refuse to call myself 'euro-pop' becasue I'm not from bloody europe, I'm not a freakin' DJ, and I'm not exclusively 'electronic', and I'm a little too 'synthetic' to be called 'rock'! - Mon, 20 Jun 2005 12:28pm
Uzer User Info... | Git yerself a gitar and play some real music. I don't like anything with any synthesizers, except for that Europe tune with the horns. ;D - Mon, 20 Jun 2005 1:47pm

canon.docre User Info... | there should be a 'punk grind' subgenre and a 'metal grind' subgenre because I don't want those types of shows mixed up. - Tue, 21 Jun 2005 9:35pm
Transgressor User Info... | whats the difference between an emo fag and a goth? absolutley nothing. they both just cry all fucking day long. hahahah - Fri, 24 Jun 2005 12:06pm
ROSS B AY User Info... | aaahahahahaha - Fri, 24 Jun 2005 12:09pm
Sati User Info... | Ok, me and Nev have been sitting here working, and laughed our asses off reading this... so here's the genres as they stand now: Punk/Metal/Hardcore Classical Jazz/Blues Pop/Rock/Alternative Reggae/Ska/Dub Funk/R&B Rap/Hip Hop Choral/Opera/Mus. Theatre DJ/Electronic Country/Bluegrass/Rockabilly Folk/Celtic/Latin/World Tribute/Cover Other/Non-Musical So, the dreaded emo has been removed ("offensive" in w/punk&metal was exactly how I put it long ago.. and Nev agreed). Now, where to put the industrial/noise thing.. we were thinking maybe industrial up with punk/metal/hc, or making the other category electronic/experimental/dj.. not sure which way to go. Also thinking a change to classical/opera and making musical theatre sit alone. No choral needed cuz choirs (it didn't even occur to me that thats what it meant!) can just list themselves under applicable genre. We don't like pigeon-holing music either but it'd be stupid to create more new categories, thats why everyone's encouraged to slot themselves into 1 or 2 categories where most appropriate, and then write in a specific genre for themselves. - Mon, 27 Jun 2005 9:30pm
moron User Info... | If I had to pick I would rather see noise and industrial in the metal section than lumped in with the totally unrelated DJ stuff. Atrax Morgue or Brighter Death Now have about as much to do with the DJ scene as say, Cannibal Corpse does. Second choice would be under "other". My main recommendation though would be to move "DJ" to the hip hop / rap section where it belongs and then combine "electronic" with noise and industrial since that is less likely to cause confusion. IMHO of course. Cheers http://industrial.org - Tue, 28 Jun 2005 8:17am
Sati User Info... | Thanks, that makes a lot of sense. Its all "I(Our)HO"'s - we don't know whats right for everyone til we hear the feedback. Any other recommendations? - Tue, 28 Jun 2005 10:24am
hesher User Info... | there should be a 'black crust' subgenre and a 'true black metal' subgenre because I don't want those types of shows mixed up. And neither does Descention. - Fri, 1 Jul 2005 5:02pm
Tyler User Info... | I find it offensive that post-punk-horn-bound-electrobowflexcore isn't listed. - Sun, 3 Jul 2005 1:19pm
sealion User Info... | electrobowflexcore. Wow, is that the midi one or the cv one? robotics motors driven oscillators and a distortion ampded treadmill, w/harmonic biosensors and a 120 v 10 amp kill switch triggered by sweat? Or is it that other one that rare bit of Eurokit...missed the last one in gear sell, cooool. and for instruments in the database for musicians no listing for synthplayer nice thread - Sat, 17 May 2008 5:35pm Edited: Sat, 17 May 2008 5:38pm
Sati User Info... | sigh. this thread is years old i think? we're TIRED! If you've got a better idea than what we already have, write it here or e-mail us to try to convince us why. I remember kinda looking into it before when this thread happened, but it eventually got lost amidst everything else. We just can't have too many genre categories, that'd be dumb. this is what we've got right now: Punk/Metal/Hardcore Classical Jazz/Blues Pop/Rock/Alternative Reggae/Ska/Dub Funk/R&B Rap/Hip Hop Theatre/Comedy/Variety Electronic/DJ Country/Bluegrass/Rockabilly Folk/Celtic/Latin/World Tribute/Cover Open Mic/Jam/Karaoke And OTHER means non-musical. Not we're-so-cool-we-defy-genre categorization, but NON-MUSICAL as in just visual or a bar's knitting circle night or something. Its because sometimes the data is installed on bar websites and we don't want it coming up on our music sites. I honesty believe that we meant to put noise up with punk/metal/hc at that time but we forgot. - Mon, 19 May 2008 5:12pm Edited: Mon, 19 May 2008 5:20pm
Curmudgeon Rocker User Info... | a Jandek category? - Mon, 19 May 2008 9:13pm
Zedius User Info... | Yeah, industrial should probably go up in the punk category. Also, isn't hardcore a subset of punk by any stretch of the imagination? - Tue, 20 May 2008 8:44am
canon.docre User Info... | "Git yerself a gitar and play some real music. I don't like anything with any synthesizers, except for that Europe tune with the horns." That is sig worthy. I don't think many of Victoria's current crop of 'hardcore' bands or denizens has much to do with punk at all. For you old folks, the term hardcore has been co-opted by clean-cut straight-edgers and youth-crew who play tough sounding music that is pretty much just metal, punctuated by slow 'breakdowns' you can beat each other up to in slow motion. If you want to talk about hardcore punk, call it that. If you want to talk about 80's hardcore, probably what you're thinking of, qualify it with a timestamp. Also, for the record, I like Victoria's hardcore scene. They're typically more open minded and positive than the punk scene in general and usually throw shows with punk and metal bands on the bill, considering (new) hardcore usually sounds metal as fuck and the bands seem to have grown tired of stringing together cheesy breakdowns and have progressed into using them tastefully, and sparingly. So in short .. don't cut the hardcore out of punk/metal/hardcore, as considering its popularity, sound, or evolution isn't really a sub-genre of punk at all. - Tue, 20 May 2008 12:32pm
Tambo User Info... | I love how the grind and hardcore scenes here love each other. It works out perfectly for me. Also, fact of the matter is, there's an equal amount (if not more) "hardcore" shows in Victoria in comparison to punk and/or metal shows, so it seems that it deserves it's title in that... err... title. - Tue, 20 May 2008 3:27pm
Ty Stranglehold User Info... | What's with the posting on the ancient thread. It scared me when I thought that Jay was posting from beyond the grave. He still thinks you should stop looking at his cock, by the way. - Wed, 21 May 2008 4:30pm
