Yesterday I woke up, did some searching on the Net to pass the time while drinking coffee half naked avoiding the burning ball of gas in the sky when I found two shitty pieces of news.

1. Belvedere has broken up. Some of you might not give a shit but we are truly losing one of the hardest working, honest, kick ass, fan based punk rock bands ever to play in every small town in this country.

2. Anti-Flag signed to a major label. That's right. The band that has made a career out being anti-corporate, pro human rights has signed to the Recording Corporation of America (RCA) which is owned by Sony, who in turn paid a bunch of 10 year old Indo kids to make your DVD players at 6 cents an hour. Way to go A-F. Atta stick it to the man.

The only thing that turned my frown upside down was a whisper that 3 scaby metal thrashers from Winter-pig named Propaghandi are putting the final touches on a new album that is and I quote "100 times better than anything we have ever done..." We sahll see. - Sat, 28 May 2005 11:41am

WHO CARES IF ANTI-FLAG SIGNED TO A MAJOR LABEL!

They are amazing artist-activists and they are maintaining all creative control over their records and won't be censored. The fact that their new cd will be in the hands of more young punks than ever before is awesome. They carry a very intelligent informed message in their lyrics that wil only sound better with the long studio hours they'll be able to put into this record. They didn't just jump at the first label that was interested, they've been getting chased ever since New Kind of Army was released. They made sure that all of their demands were met and they'll stil be putting out anti-flag music on Fat and A-F records. I'm so sick of hearing that punk bands lose cred when they join a major. (With noteable exceptions like the offspring.) They don't lose cred, they simply are able to send a positive informed message to more ears in this world. I'm glad they'll have the distribution to counteract the Britanys and Black Eyed Peas of this world. - Sat, 28 May 2005 6:07pm

Belvedere totally sucks. They were pretty boring when I saw them live... hopefully the members will just go and form better bands. It's been a long time since Propagandhi put out Today's Empires, Tomorrow's Ashes. I liked it a lot better than their older more pop-punk records. Can't wait to hear a new one. - Sun, 29 May 2005 11:45am

Mitch, it must really hurt that your favorite band sold out. It happens to us all :-)

The fact is, Anti-Flag will not get heard by any more "punks" than they currently do. They are already as well entrenched in the current DIY system as one can get.

What has happend is that a giant multi-national has co-opted a message and lifestyle (that is free), branded it and is now selling back to you.

What will happen is Anti-Flag will get a slot on Carson Daily, their record in every mall in Kansas and maybe an openning slot on Good Charlotte's next arena tour (but hey thats all right, cuz more punks will hear them at the GC show).

Getting signed isn't a bad thing (we all got to eat)... but you have to wonder when a band that preaches a certain value set, practises another. Will this be better for Anti-Flag in the end? How many fans will they sacrifice to get a review in Rolling Stone? I would wager... getting signed may have been a poor career move for Anti-Flag (not every band... but maybe this one band). Sorry to preach... thats the way I see it and my spelling sucks.

..Propagandhi needs to put out more records. - Sun, 29 May 2005 11:46am

mitch, ultimately, when a band signs to a major label they're making that label money. its not about 'cred'. It's about their (now) very real and measurable support of Sony, who as someone mentioned aren't exactly batting 1000 when it comes to protecting the human rights of their workforce. - Sun, 29 May 2005 1:38pm

Whaka whaka what the fuck?

sony did not invent electricity: no one did.
they also did not invent the washer dryer, fridge, microscope, etc.
it's odd that someone can utter complete unreliable bullshit under the guise off "do your research"!

so do YOUR research; you'll find out that sony hasn't been around long to have invented half those things.. unless of course.. sony invented time, and has somehow also mastered time travel?

Belvedere.... not what I consider to be punk rock at all.... More of a pop rock band if you ask me. A very hard working pop rock band, but definitely not punk rock. Anti-Flag, they wrote a few catchy tunes, but they havent done anything worth listening to in a long time and even then they only wrote a few songs worth listening to. Now dont get all in a fluster if you like them, because hey most bands dont even make it to the point where they have a few songs worth listening to. Propogahndi... totally fucking suck in my books, but thats just me. I am sure there are a million little p/c punks out there that will just hate me for saying that but I dont care I think that p/c self righteous crap is bullshit. Go eat a steak, wear some leather, buy an eight ball, cut down a forest, drive a V8, sleep with a junkie 20 dollar hooker, and kick the shit out of some 80 pound hippie with a congo drum and berkinstocks. While singing along with your favorite GG Allin album of course........ fucking p/c bullshit. - Mon, 30 May 2005 2:21pm

i don't think (stylistically) belvedere were a punk rock band, but they had that sort of goofy skate punk edge (a la satanic surfers) that kept them in the punk scene for years. i mean, they opened for bad religion and the casualties.
when i was 13 i remember singing along to lemmings, and seeing them a few times. bands quit. that's what happened, i had a few good memories. - Mon, 30 May 2005 3:15pm

hey Jay, you liked the latest Propagandhi disc "Today's Empires Tomorrow's Ashes" when you didn't know who it was and it was playing in my car. It's HEAVY!

Now you know I'm all about steaks, leather, 8-balls and junkie hookers, but if everyone judged bands on their lyrical content, where would AWT be(heh heh)?

The bottom line is that Propagandhi, like AWT, play amazing music. You don't have to tow the line of the band to enjoy it.

trivia factoid #42: Propagandhi in all seriousness credit the Dayglo Abortions for making them want to be in a hardcore punk band.

once again, Belvedere are not a punk band. Pop rock, yes, punk, no. People are much to liberal with the word punk when they describe bands nowadays. - Tue, 31 May 2005 7:23pm

Seems more like your view of the word punk is pretty limited there, Jay. Belvedere played fast crazy hectic music that made me want to hop on a skateboard and bomb some hills. To me, that is ALL I need to call them a skate punk band. To say they were "pop", as in popular, I'd agree but that's about the only way I would use that word. Overlly melodic? sure. Occaisionly whiny? I wouldn't disagree. But "Pop"? I wonder how much you have actually listened to thier material. - Tue, 31 May 2005 7:41pm

yeah, I wouldn't call Belvedere pop rock either. Pop rock is like Kid Rock, or Three Doors Down, or even Van Halen, Aerosmith, etc. Popular rock.

Belevedere were definitely punk rock of a sort. - Wed, 1 Jun 2005 9:18am

Ah well to each their own, I am not saying they dont have a bit of a punk edge but to me a punk rock band is much more raw and a lot less radio friendly. They definitely arent skate punk I can tell you that one for sure... - Wed, 1 Jun 2005 10:02am

just like to point out, millencolin is a so called "skate punk band" according to your list ty, and they sound VERY similar to Belvedere.

But really why does it matter, either you liked them or you didn't, they are all super cool guys, and it sucks that they called it quits. - Wed, 1 Jun 2005 8:46pm

In my opinion belvedere are a punk band. they had the basic elements of a pop punk band fast, technical, with lots of vocal harmonys and catchy riffs. They're like a more melotic nofx styled music which i would call punk, only in the respect that thats what spawned out of original punk. I mean its just the way the genre is turning look at whats considered rock nowadays to what was considered rock back in the day, now known as "classic rock" they're totally different with some major fundimentals that havent left the genre hey maybe one day there will be "classic punk rock" as a genre either way belvedere is punk just new punk and all you traditionalists can keep ur limited view on a genre of music never letting it branch out....thats cool i didnt want to have any new forms of music anyways. - Thu, 2 Jun 2005 7:02pm

hey ty, in what arrangement?
i did not know they were still kicking it. just goes to show i guess..
i don't know much about punk rock, but i'd still say that belvedere has skate punk elements to their sound. they are just catchy, i think. that can still be punk i think. - Thu, 2 Jun 2005 7:33pm

Drag this out Tyler how dare you!! Let it never end is what I say. Yeah I don't really like Millencolins newer stuff at all, and well them and Belvedere kind of remind me of each other... actually I am into many new forms of music, but blending pop and punk to form pop punk isnt anything new it's just pop music with distorted guitars thats all. which in my books still makes it pop music. Nothing against Belvedere, it's just that in my books they arent anymore punk rock than Blink 182 or Green Day. It's just pop music that is marketed to the wanna be's of this generation. - Wed, 8 Jun 2005 5:43am
