Colin,
I am in need of a distortion/overdrive pedal with some versatility. I don't play metal/punk, but looking for a dynamically sensitive pedal that can give Crazy Horse/Matt Mays/Muse/Radiohead (Bends) type drive and crunch, but something that can also do a great creamy tone. I have a Strat with single coils, an ES-335, and a Epi Wildkat and a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe.

I am leaning towards either the Proco Deucetone RAT (for the flexibility, but I hear it isn't very sensitive to playing dynamics....true?) or a Big Muff....

pros and cons of each? I have read all over the net, but I know you know your stuff..

also, does L&M carry RATS? - Mon, 2 May 2005 8:45am

I'm no Colin, but I'll give my 2 cents. Big Muff will give you a creamy, fuzzy tone, but it's not versatile at all. I've heard nothing but bad things about the Deucetone, but have never personally played it. I'd recommend a Rat2. I'm in the market for one myself. If you are looking for fuzzier and you have some cash to drop, I know [+} would recommend a Zvex Fuzz Factory, which is what Muse uses (I think).
As far as I know, L&M does carry ProCo products, but I've only ever seen the Deucetone and the Vintage Rat. - Mon, 2 May 2005 10:09am

I am also starting to consider the MXR double-shot. Will check out the Zvex. Thanks for tips - Mon, 2 May 2005 10:18am

mxr distortion+ (vintage is the best and sometimes cheaper than the new ones)
deucetone sounds great from their clips, but i still haven't tried one in person.

i would, personally, check out the danelectro french toast fuzz. it has a HUGE wall of fuzz sound. or even the dano fabtone. both have that arena rock (see: muse) vibe to them. and yes i DO recommend the zvex fuzz factory.

check it out here: http://media.zvex.com/fuzzfactory.mov

and also, zvex just came out with the new vexter series fuzz factory..
it's cheaper because it's not hand painted. so that might be a good option. - Mon, 2 May 2005 10:36am

The Rat is, IMO, easily the most versatile distortion pedal ever. The fact that the tone knob actually makes a big difference even with a slight adjustment seems to be the key. if you are looking for something totally exotic in a dist box you could try the infamous Prunes and Custard which is what they call a "modulation" distortion pedal. It makes guitars (and especially basses) sound like a synth sort of when you crank it up having a lot of dynamic input available (the harder you play the more pronounced the effect).. Expensive though. - Mon, 2 May 2005 11:21am

thanks, thanks and thanks.

I think the Deucetone Rat is a definite contender (versatility, two-channel 6 modes)
as are:
the ZVex Fuzz Factory (for harmonic distortion)
MXR doubleshot (I like the EQ on both stages)

can't afford to go for anything really boutique. - Mon, 2 May 2005 11:53am

any particulare reason for RAT 2 vs Deucetone RAT? Ie. what can the RAT 2 do that the Deucetone cannot(and the Deucetone can do a great deal more)? - Mon, 2 May 2005 12:45pm

i'd go for a single pedal that can do it really well, rather than a double pedal that does it alright. again, IMO. - Mon, 2 May 2005 9:37pm

Well here is my holy grail of an answer.

If you are on a budget I would recomend getting and 0d-3 pedal from boss, or the ts7 tube screamer and the danelectro french toast fuzz.

there are many ways you could potentially use these pedals.

1. run them by themselves

2 do what i did and keep the overdrive on all the time, using your volume control on the guitar to get you clean tone, and then kick in the fuzz for some extra juice. I would run the fuzz before the overdrive.

3. running fuzz after overdrive, if you keep the gain down on the fuzz this will kick up when you engage the overdrive. makes for a very bright big muff tone.

If you are not on a budget I would still buy this rig, or a vintage rat or a maxon sd-9. the maxon sd-9 is the most over looked pedal, its like having 2 ts-9's on, then you roll your volume back and its like you turned one off ! - Tue, 3 May 2005 6:08pm

you will probably dissagree, good fuck you

zoom, pso2, or such makes, palm-top studios
these can also work as really good effects boxxes for oohhhh djs, if ya know how to use them right

they have like 50 different presets, for guitar bass, and vocals, you can edit perameters, and save the presets...

go for the black distortion, you can edit any effects, and save them for future use.....do it

These effects are awsome, mind ya, they are only as good as what you make of em,

so anyways... thatz enough outa me - Sat, 7 May 2005 9:30am

zoom pedals have lousy tone, the only good pedal they made was their fuzz. Other than that, garbage. The only player I have seen use zoom is Prince, and who wants to sound like prince. (well actually I do) - Tue, 10 May 2005 11:36am

[+} called it. distortion + is money. I love that pedal. I also relly dig the boss Super OD. If you want basic RAWK the SOD is the wy to go. Stay away from bug muffs. You will get one tone. It can only sound like a big muff, which is cool if thats what you're going for.

Colin, bring back the fro.
Aidan, get rid of that gay litle symbol.

I have to agree on the Pro Co. Rat suggestion, as I've had the original Rat for years, originally purchased for bass distortion. On the bass, it never really worked out, as the sound came out sounding really "clunky" and undefined, as well it really squashed the low-end frequencies completely. Although with a passive bass, it sounds much smoother. On my recently purchased guitar, it sounds great, even through my shitty home practice amp, producing an awesome distortion that doesn't mask the sound of the induvidual strings when chording. Kinda reminds me of the mid-range sound of many of the NWOBHM bands of the early 80's - which is a damn good thing! - Sun, 15 May 2005 8:14pm

Well, I think the only solution is more than one pedal. I just tried out a ton this weekend, and came home with a Dallas Arbiter Fuzz Face. Doesn't do everything I am looking for, but I love the crunch out of that thing - Mon, 16 May 2005 8:02am

Yeah, The fuzz face is preatty hip. Something about it though just rubs me the wronog way. I don't know what it is. SD-1 for life! - Mon, 16 May 2005 9:58am

SD-1 is an overdrive jason. the fuzz face is a fuzz. apple/orange.
the arbiter is a fantastic choice, i think colin will agree as he had one on his board for a brief cameo appearance.
if it weren't for the fact that a fuzz factory can nail the fuzz face sound and is about 1/3 the size, i'd look into getting some more nasty fuzz all up in my board. - Mon, 16 May 2005 2:37pm
