I keep wondering whether either Vancouver bands are happy to remain under the radar (fair enough), or they're living large playing to packed parties, so not so concerned about their bar shows. So if I'm not friends with, or a fan of & actually following the careers of the players, it takes some decision making before heading out. I often wonder how other music fans decide whether or not to hit a local show if they're not basing it on the same criterion.

Missed the first band, like a chump. Glimpse of Mutiny - I think they've played a half dozen bar shows, with punk & metal bands, but I may be wrong.

Aeterna are nothing if not showmen, which is great for an all out POWER METAL band. With a vocalist whose pipes could ring out through a stadium, ranging from high pitched screams to gutterals that'd make any pro death metal band proud, he and the others vie for the spotlight. Now that's A LOTTA HAM, which though extremely entertaining, can be distracting if you're trying to take in the music & not sure where to focus! Looks like less than a dozen shows so far, over the course of a couple of years, due to a long medical mishap... so its coming together pretty nicely.
Entertainment value IS: HIGH! :)

Excruciating Pain has been around for over 2 years, and unfortunately got mixed up with another similarly named band, which probably cut their audience, thinking they were overplaying, getting ALL the sweet spots (so you know - TOTALLY unfair, and no need to hurry out to see them!). In that time they've developed into a seriously competent, in their words "driving technical, melodic, fist pounding metal" band. They're capable, AND funny and personable and approachable... cool people who can walk and talk and like engaging with their fans. So a little disconcerting when you're out to grouch and grumble at a metal show. :) That was a great set: sweet players who're captivating to watch, well structured songs, and no shortcomings I can think of. They're at that point where they make it look fun and easy, and they've got an AWESOME new backdrop.

Headlining was Abriosis. I saw one of Abriosis' first shows back at the Cobalt in 2008 and while I understood what they were getting at, I didn't feel it, but I knew it was something right up my alley and had to be coming. I hadn't really been paying enough attention until about last year, when they seemed to really step it up. After at least 4 different vocalists they've finally settled on someone I hear is quite celebrated. The first shows I've seen with her were good, but understandably disconnected.. but this one, only 4 months in, killed. It all of a sudden became clear to me that she has the potential to not just handle the vocal responsibilities in quite a complex band, but also an audience. This band's ready.

It wasn't as packed as a show like this should be, but its always good to see our friends, and some of my favorite people, out. We've all got some work to do to make sure these bands - and the people who put them there - get their due!
