Wonder what happens to Mars Volta and Sparta now?

This was posted on reddit.com yesterday and by the time I was driving home from work Jeremy Baker had played One Armed Scissor and announced it on the Zone. News is traveling fast.

CMJ posted this short story:

Wow! Talk about awesome, that breakup. I felt like applauding. Just that they didn't bow in to the huge amounts of business/industry pressure and did what they felt was right.

I kept hearing about atdi through the mid-90s but they never came up here. Then one day I showed up early at the Starfish where they'd just finished playing an unannounced set to nobody but the other bands & bar staff. They'd just decided last minute to x the border. When the staff (who had no idea who they were) told me who'd just played I started flipping out so they introduced me to Jim Ward. We had a great talk and he seemed to appreciate hearing the things my mega-fan friends from all over had said about them, and he remembered me the next couple times they came out which kinda shocked me.
Anyway, he struck me as one of the coolest, most genuine people I'd ever met so given that life in music can be a cruel and unforgiving place, I always hoped that he was doing well.

I heard they toured with the HUmpers once! - Tue, 10 Jan 2012 12:26pm Edited: Tue, 10 Jan 2012 12:29pm

They can definately tear it up.

I saw this TV show called Farm Club from MTV USA way back when. This particular episode featured performances by ATDI and ...Trail of Dead.

I immediately went out and bought both CDs, cause that's what people did back then, they actually walked into a store and bought stuff.

Anyway here are those performances:

I have subsequently seen Mars Volta and Trail of Dead both in Austin at separate events (ACL and SXSW respectively). Mars Volta was some crazy-ass shit where as Trail of Dead were good but didn't smash their gear up when they ended their set with Richter Scale Madness. That's what I wanted to see, oh well.

ATDI have been hyped to me by countless people. This Farmclub clip is the first time I have seen and heard this band.

Did they usually play out of tune and barely stay in time? - Thu, 12 Jan 2012 3:07pm

Mars Volta still will exist. They have a new CD coming out this year, so I wouldn't expect this to last forever. Omar and Cedric used to perform on drugs at every show until a very close friend died. That was their wake up call. So, that would explain the sporadic frenzy. - Sat, 18 Feb 2012 7:50pm

To be honest atdi never made a huge impression on me either, the times I finally did see them, but that doesn't matter - a lot of people whose opinions I respect love them. And I still think they're an admirable band. Always felt a little bad about it though since I don't fake praise and he was so incredibly gracious. - Sun, 19 Feb 2012 11:33am Edited: Sun, 19 Feb 2012 11:36am

Mars Volta is a more fulfilling and adult project anyway. Not much of a Sparta fan. These guys were young and full of energy. That's about it. - Sun, 19 Feb 2012 7:43pm
