thar was lame...playing fast modes doesn't mean jack shit.....when you gonna learn....one well played note could say a hella lot more then that.
But sure practice modal arpeggios with a metrenome and speed it up everyday.
You know the chicks just dig this stuff! - Wed, 9 Mar 2005 4:18pm

wow.. the guitarists equivalent to masturbation. i hate it when shredders cheat with delay.

have you guys ever heard real country fingerstyle? talk to me after you've seen Buster B Jones play, i saw him here at Long and McQuade.. unreal. and apparently he used to be faster. but he's just a tasty player who knows about melody and chording. - Wed, 9 Mar 2005 6:51pm

yes true there are a lot better guitarists out there like les paul and many other greats.... but god damn that fucker is fast! does anyone know where i could order a conklin guitar at? im thinking about getting an 8 or 7 the 9 looks a bit too hardcore for me. - Wed, 9 Mar 2005 8:14pm

I don't understand why some people find it necessary to cut down shredders.

Rusty is a seriously talented player who has a superior command of his instrument. He can do more than just "play modes really fast".

[+} - Cheating? Using delay is far from cheating. Rusty is an example of someone who is INCREDIBLY fast and clean. The delay does not affect his technique. Your comparison to country fingerstyle is irrelevant.

If you don't like the music then don't listen to it. Don't cut it down.

ODIN - Why would you compare someone like Les Paul to a shredder like Cooley? It's apples and oranges man. - Fri, 11 Mar 2005 12:21am

I didn't compare them I just said yes there are other guitarists out there who can't play as fast or sound like a computer but are equaly respectable if not more so. And yes mik I can see your point. If you don't like it don't listen to it!

ps. delay is cheating because it makes him sound faster it has nothing to do with how "clean" he plays or his technique. although if he was sloppy the delay would make it a lot more noticable. - Fri, 11 Mar 2005 10:51pm

Les Paul shreds all over shredders, what are you talking about?
He played better with a casted broken arm than anyone in this discussion board. - Sat, 12 Mar 2005 1:31am

Well that dude definately gets an A in sweeping and arpeggios. But alas he has a video of him from 1991 and this is the first i've heard of him. I guess he better switch to play left handed and write "7 nation army" if he wants to hit it big. Seriously though maybe just slow it down and get melodic ala Satriani, just cuz you can play a bazillion miles per hour does mean it's a good thing to do. - Sat, 12 Mar 2005 11:42pm

Rusty Cooly in insane! He was rated #7 on Guitar One's fasted shreders of all time. Its hard to believe there is 6 people rated faster than him for sure!

Rated #1 of all time is Michael Angelo Batio, check out his site at http://www.angelo.com
Personally I think Rusty Cooly is even faster than Michael Batio, who knows, its definatly to hard to tell at that speed though. - Sun, 13 Mar 2005 9:18pm

I'd rather watch Steve Morse play something more technical, Yngwie play with more speed and agression, or Gary Moore play with more taste. Not that he doesn't have chops but I got bored about 1/2 way through. - Sun, 13 Mar 2005 9:39pm

It's his computer room where he films his instructional video's for CD-ROM and has recording gear. The *Wank* video's there don't do his writing skills justice, hearing him on CD is a totally different experience. It takes a lot of time and practice to get to that speed and keep accuracy, just as it does with any style. Why is this such a big deal? Why are so many guitarists on this board threatened by him? - Fri, 18 Mar 2005 9:00pm

Wow.
First impression: he's really fast.
2-3 minutes later: still really fast.
Much, much later: still fast.
Zero dynamics, questionable tone?
I've seen some monsters- Stevie Ray Vaughan, Joe Satriani, Trey Anastasio, Buddy Guy...
The man who impressed me the most was Bill Frisell.
Him and guys like Derek Trucks, Neil Young or even Jeff Tweedy play from the heart first and foremost, and that's what really connects with the folks at home...
Even someone as technical as Frank Zappa can be soulful, and it's usually that "one" note that really hits you, not the 327 at once that prove that age old saying once again:

JUST BECAUSE YOU CAN DOESN'T MEAN YOU SHOULD.

(my fave moment was in the "jam" at about seven minutes where he looks at the camera, then over his shoulder, then makes tough guy face) - Fri, 18 Mar 2005 11:30pm

I started this thread because I thought this was cool. The guy can play guitar, this is undeniable. Even by the biggest guitar snob out there. If he doesn't fall into your genre, taste, or preference, this doesn't mean he is not talented. There are lots of other guitarists who are talented that play faster (Batio) and slower (BB King). They just have different styles. Does this make them any better or worse? NO! Why has this become so controversial?!?! Is there a new supreme race of guitarists coming to take over the world of guitar?! NO! The man is a guitarist not a nazi! - Sat, 19 Mar 2005 1:03am

I know you can't compare the two, but Charlie Hunter plays an 8-string guitar as well. Those things are pretty cool. Don't see them very often. Very different style...but it's interesting to see what he does with it. Both the bass and guitar parts at the same time. http://www.charliehunter.com

Rusty is hella fast, no doubt...he's got chops. So, I don't think anyone on this site can really talk shit about how he plays. Might be able to slag him for his shorts...but not his playing. I'll give him props for what he does. - Sun, 20 Mar 2005 3:17pm

Oft times the tecnnical demonstration does not impress people like it might otherwise. Perhaps if people saw this guy layin it down with some people, they would appreciate it more.

The guy is well versed on the fretboard, no doubt. But it doesn't move my groove-bone one inch... - Sun, 20 Mar 2005 7:59pm
