It's one of those things that words are too vague and imprecise to illustrate with any degree of accuracy or appropriate representation.

Listen to it more than once. Let it lull you into the small, beautiful details.

Nick's basslines are the only thing missing.

I give it a mutant hand with 8 thumbs, up.

Oh, and buy it. Don't "steal" music! - Fri, 25 Feb 2005 11:11pm

Bizarre, I totally disagree; this is the biggest piece of shit album. Josh Homme has really jumped the shark on this one. Probably 90% b-side quality song writing. He is definitely doing the wrong drugs. - Sat, 26 Feb 2005 4:58pm

b-side quality is where Homme shines

all his mainstream stuff is *yawn* after about 3 listens. - Sun, 27 Feb 2005 9:38am

By b-side quality I meant shitty song writing, the production quality is still mainstream. If you're talking about b-side quality in a production sense I totally agree; I would rather listen to the original Desert Sessions recordings than any QOTSA remakes any day. - Sun, 27 Feb 2005 1:12pm

I like it.
The vocal harmonies absolutely kill! Catchiest album Josh has put out yet. The only song that hasn't and probably won't get me is 'This Lullaby'.
Some of my faves are 'Tangled Up In Plaid', 'The Long Slow Goodbye', 'Everybody Knows That You're Insane' and 'Medication'. Overall, an excellent release. Comes out on March 21st I believe.
I think the biggest difference for Josh these days is that he isn't doing many drugs at all. - Sun, 27 Feb 2005 3:17pm

Kid Commie: That IS weird...I find a lot of Desert Sessions albums to have more filler than consitency. There are some delightful gems to be found amongst all the tripe on D.S., but I can, and have, and will continue to listen to Lullabies all the way through without cringing or lunging to change the song.

Mike: Stealing is bad for your constitution. And for Josh. Cut that out.

Mr. Hell: Correct, as usual. - Tue, 1 Mar 2005 5:01pm

What I meant was Desert Sessions songs that QOTSA remake tend to sound better on the Desert Sessions recordings than the QOTSA recordings. I just prefer the raw stuff versus the heavily produced stuff. I agree, there are quite a few Desert Sessions tracks that deserve the fast forward button... which to me, Lullabies is like as well (most of them deserve the fast forward button). The only track I like on this album is the Desert Sessions remake (can't think of the name offhand), but the original is better. I'm interested to see how this album goes over on a whole. To me this album is to QOTSA what the black album was to Metallica. - Tue, 1 Mar 2005 5:24pm

"In my Head (Or Something)." It's true, is a great song.

I have a bit of a curious interest in Josh's endeavours, as I think he's got a musical Midas touch. The lovely thing is that we can agree to disagree.

I did find this album to be more a more challenging listen than, say, their first album, but I like how Mr. Homme has embraced his unique singing style and gone on this path of simplicity.

I don't know about the whole "Jumping the Shark" analogy, but we can make a friendly wager. - Thu, 3 Mar 2005 4:55pm

hey-o
i wanted to say that im a bit dissapointed in this relase
and im a big fan
alot of whats on this disc seems like it belongs on a desert sessions disc
it doesnt grab me
theres a lack of that cool darkness and a total lack of that punky agression that makes thier other cds shine
im going to see them on apr 13 and i think im actually more excited about seeing motorhead and COC the next night at the commodore
coc..."corrosion of conformity's" new stuff is however KILLER!
check it out
its called in the arms of god and im pretty pleased with it to say the least
cheers CC - Sun, 27 Mar 2005 1:16am

The last two paragraphs you wrote would fit nicely in another review thread titled 'Corrosion Of Conformity - In The Arms Of God'.
I stand by 'Lullabies...' as a solid QOTSA album...mind you, Nick Oliveri is sorely missing from the bass end of this album. - Sun, 27 Mar 2005 5:44pm

I actually took a listen to CoC's new album "In the Arms of God" (sorta ho-hum), it's too bad they won't play this city now there touring with Motorhead. The QOTSA CD? I dunno, I prefer listening to Eagles of Death Metal actually ;) - Sun, 27 Mar 2005 10:12pm

I've been a fan for a long time and I think this album is pretty good. It's definitely not what most fans were expecting, but I think that's what's so good about it.It would've been really easy for Josh Homme to just write twelve more variations of no one knows and go with the flow and sit back and collect the cash.Instead, he took a huge creative risk and did something completely different. Some of the best songs this band has ever written are on this album(long slow goodbye- amazing!).In doing this I think he's prolonged the life of the band for a few more records at least.Interesting to see where they go from here.

That being said......the lack of Nick Oliveri is very noticeable, his punk edge(as CC mentioned)is missing.....and being a drummer,I have to say the drums suck on this record. Not the playing(I like the minimalism),but the production....the drums are just buried in the mix.I prefer the drum sound from the last record.

Looking forward to the show in a couple of weeks to see how the new material/new line-up sounds. - Mon, 28 Mar 2005 10:12pm

I stand by this album, so much more now that I have seen the DVD. To watch the evolution and creation of the songs adds such an amazing depth to the whole album-making process, and the DVD totally shows Josh being creative and innovative.

A rare breed, that Josh. - Sun, 3 Apr 2005 7:16am
