It was 10 days, but we had a minor glitch... here's the lineup for the The Victoria City Wide Tsunami Relief Benifit Series.

Thusday Feb 3rd @ Hush

Each show has its own genre in mind, no matter what you like there will probably be something for you to check out. Check the listings for who's playing what shows.. All shows are $5 minimum donation and ALL proceeds from admissions goto The Red Cross.

All production costs have been covered by the venues in question or related sponsors and all the bands and artists have donated their time as well.

This was an insane project to put together in the timeframe given and I just wanted to thank all the venues and organizers for being so willing to work with the concept and cause (publicly while I can). - Fri, 28 Jan 2005 2:28pm

Thanks for your hard work! I heard on the radio yesterday that the Red Cross is not directing donations towards Tsunami relief anymore but to other world crisis. If the money collected from these benefits is to go towards Tsunami relief, then perhaps it should go to another charitable organization that will guarantee that it indeed goes where you intend it to go. Maybe you should call the Red Cross to verify what I just told you. Anyone else hear this news? - Fri, 28 Jan 2005 6:36pm

Red Cross seeking donations supporting B.C. flood relief
VANCOUVER, Jan. 28 /CNW/ - The Canadian Red Cross today announced a
public appeal for financial donations supporting its assistance to those
affected by flooding and landslides in several parts of B.C.
"We're currently meeting with local officials and up to 50 families in
flood-affected areas," says Red Cross spokesperson Chris Bone. "Red Cross help
will be directed toward ensuring those families have the support required to
complete clean-up and repair necessary to allow them back into their homes as
soon as possible. Where they are unable to return, our goal is to work
collaboratively with other relief providers and government to ensure interim
and long-term housing options are available."
Bone says Red Cross addresses basic needs not covered through provincial
government assistance programs or insurance.
Home Depot, a Red Cross disaster partner, is providing the relief
organization with clean-up kits for use in several flood-affected communities
throughout the province.
"If the situation remains stable, we estimate the cost of Red Cross help
will be about $200,000," she noted. "Obviously, that total could escalate in a
hurry if the situation worsens."
Those wishing to make a financial donation in support of the Red Cross
B.C. Flood Appeal can do so by calling 1.800.418.1111 or by visiting the Red
Cross website at http://www.redcross.ca. Donations are also accepted at all Red Cross
offices.

Here's some clarification:

The proceeds for the Tsunami Relief Shows will be donated to the Red Cross where it will be used for their long-term efforts in areas affected by what is being called one of the largest-scale natural disasters in human history.

The money will be donated to the Canadian Red Cross, which is part of the International Red Cross Movement representing 179 National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies around the globe. The Movement is the largest disaster preparedness and relief network in the world.

We chose the Red Cross because of their considerable experience with large-scale disaster relief, as well as their dedication to providing more than short-term aid.

"During the ‘relief' phase of disasters, Red Cross works with municipalities, governments and other relief organizations to address immediate basic needs – such as shelter, clothing, food, first aid and emotional support.

In the ‘recovery' phase of disasters, when the media spotlight has often shifted elsewhere, Red Cross remains on the scene – helping those affected to rebuild their lives and their communities.

Red Cross coordinates its recovery work with other relief organizations to address gaps in assistance provided through municipalities, governments and insurance companies. In recent disasters, such help has included assisting in the purchase of essential household items, as well as clothing and equipment to enable people to return to school or work."

The Red Cross is also instrumental in providing long-term support while affected communities rebuild, including rehabilitation for the often overlooked social and psychological issues that arise with shared trauma on a cultural scope. Education, counselling, and peer-driven social programs help recognize and deal with the effects of post-traumatic issues.

We have to dedicate our contribution to the Tsunami relief efforts simply because that's what the organizers, venues, performers, sponsors, and volunteers have donated their time and energy to. To give the money to another cause would be dishonest. At the same time, by dedicating our contribution to the largest disaster that the Red Cross is dealing with, we are providing them the opportunity to re-allocate their own resources to other efforts.

I've been an Oxfam volunteer for over 3 years. When you donate to them, you can specify which program you'd like the money to go to. So, if you say you want it to go to the tsunami, that's where it'll go.

Because we promised them, and because they need it.

“In Canada, we’re still counting on proceeds from upcoming tsunami fundraising events and initiatives that have been coordinated with Red Cross," says Canadian Red Cross Secretary General Dr. Pierre Duplessis. "With donations we now have – and those we are counting on from initiatives not yet concluded – Red Cross is confident we’ll have enough to complete our tsunami relief, recovery and rehabilitation programs over the next ten years.”

This is the first time that virtually all of the venues in Victoria have come together for one big event. As far as we understand, we're the only city in North Amerca that put together a city-wide benefit. And before we tried it, we didn't even know if it could be done. The fact that this has come together in the minimal amount of time that we've had is pretty cool. It could mean that we can start working together to plan more (and even bigger) events that benefit other causes - including those closer to home, and those that don't necessarily get as much media exposure. the red cross is on of the best charities from a money-donated-to-money-spent-helping stand point. they spend nearly all the money on the people they are trying to help, and very little on bureaucracy and marketing. definitely stick with red cross.

and how can you trace really where this specific money goes? money is liquid and all donations presumable go to some "red cross donations" general fund, and are distributed from there. so does it matter if this money is actually in excess of what they need for the tsunami problems and it ends up helping someone equally as worse-off in africa? money is money is money, so i'd say don't bother changing the name either.

No it isn't , we're having issues with Darcy's database record thinking its all ages when it really isn't =)

... The All Ages component of this whole deal was the Big Fernwood show that was last weekend (we just couldn't get a closer date to the other shows) WHICH BTW we made $545 bux at that Big Fernwood show!!
