Brooke User Info... | Fun times Saturday February 12 @ The Gary Oak Room. Doors and 1st band promptly at 7:00 in order to end by 10:45. $6 at the door. Please spread the word. Immaculate Machine: local indie-rock. Old and new songs. Bella: good old-fashioned boy/girl electropoppy stuff from Vancouver. BA Johnston: Very funny act from Halifax, though he will probably pretend to live in his mom's basement in Hamilton. Witness his bitter cynicism and contrasting odes to the simple pleasures (poutine, Mario Bros, monkeys, etc). Black Tie Social: (?... someone fill in this blank) - Tue, 25 Jan 2005 1:30pm

I think our 5-minute set + interview will happen at 7:30-8:00ish. I don't even know what channel the New VI is - anyone? - Mon, 7 Feb 2005 12:30am

Anonymous User Info... | Ewww.... the New VI? That sucks. Why would you do such a thing? It just makes you look shitty, like Big Muff or something. - Mon, 7 Feb 2005 10:16pm
nick User Info... | Well, the new VI, yes, they have had some difficulties broadcasting... "good" things... now this is a change isn't it? It's about time some bands that actually sounded different made it on our little small town tv stations. - Mon, 7 Feb 2005 10:46pm
[+} User Info... | Sara Marreiros has been on there; i liked her stuff. - Tue, 8 Feb 2005 12:41pm
Brooke User Info... | Well you see, Anonymous, the New VI is merely a medium. We have to leave it to the viewers to intelligently discriminate between us and (say) Big Muff. If you can't appreciate something just because it is delivered on a tv station that isn't normally to your tastes, then I have to wonder how much you really appreciate music for it's own sake. Silly scenester. Or you could just not watch it. - Tue, 8 Feb 2005 3:05pm
k8 User Info... | Butbutbutbutbut Hudson Mack! I'm going to try to get up early enough to watch it...looking forward to the show. - Tue, 8 Feb 2005 4:49pm
Anonymous User Info... | Okay, point taken. Fair enough. It's not a terrible crime, you're right. I jumped on that too fast, but I still have some gripes: Merely a medium? Oh, come on. Some aren't so sure. Say, like anyone who's ever thought about culture and its relation to technology. I get your point, but your said responsibility of descerning intellegently applies to these desicions of yours of representation too, right? And, really: music for its own sake? Music can never exist outside these social/political/economial/etc implications. We all know that. One more thing: please don't assume I'm a scenester. Scenester? What does that even mean? I just moved here and have no interest in social climbing. ( I actually don't even know who Big Muff is, I just heard about them enough in terrible ways, so I take it back), I just find that there is real radical potential and beauty in independent music scenes and would like to see those kinds of efforts strive. Agreed? I won't watch it, you're right, but I might go to the show because I must commend you on playing affordable all ages shows when so many won't. And I think your band is poppy and fun. You just make me nervous. In conclusion: Calm my nerves, immaculate machine. Promise me that you won't bow to Warner. I'm not so sure if I'm being silly or not, I admit. - Tue, 8 Feb 2005 11:09pm
john User Info... | "bow to warner" is that a hothotheat dig? - Wed, 9 Feb 2005 12:24am
Mystery Geust User Info... | I really doubt that the immcaulate machine would "bow to warner" They are way above that kind of sell your souls for a record kind of stuff. p.s you should all come the show! - Wed, 9 Feb 2005 9:28am
Brooke User Info... | I will stick with the affirmation that tv is just a medium. Clearly, tv stations are not an unbiased (culturally) source of information. The content and procedure are regulated by corporate mandates and ideologies. The station is bad for that reason, right? But having local bands airing is bypassing the big business mandate - they make no money on it. It is organised a local indie music fan whose goal is not the corporation's. Signing to Warner would be entering into a partnership with "the enemy" in a way that playing on tv would not. If we could, for instance, get on all of Warner's advertising and distribution lists without them making any money from it at all (say someone on Warner just thought it would be cool to give some props to the indie scene), then I don't know if there would be anything wrong with it. The question it seems we're going towards here is: can you use a bad vehicle to get across a good message? An analogy: imagine David Suzuki has to speak about air pollution in some far away land where people need to know that stuff... it would be contradictory for him to fly there, since planes are very polluting. But does that negate the speech he's going to give altogether? Or can we allow some hypocrisy in order for his message about how flying's bad to reach its audience, who might all decide not to fly, resulting in less flying in the long run. Michael Moore's movies are actually a great example. The Corporation has major corporate distribution. Here's what I think: bands that make their style their message (ie bands who are subversive just by the way they look and act) are much more easily co-opted by big business than bands whose message is in the substance of their music. Some people think H.H.H. were subversive because they were part of an underground music culture (ie not because of their content), and so when they emerged into the mainstream, they lost all subversion. Whoa. I had to erase most of the crap I'd written. I am way too caught up in academia. - Wed, 9 Feb 2005 1:44pm
nick User Info... | I think the New Vi is shit not because of corporate ideologies, but because they play shitty programs. They spent all their money on creating the station and hiring a bunch of morons they had to fire, so yeah... now they have no money left to actually make anything anyone wants to see. If IM were signed by Warner, then who cares? Like Brooke said, better to have something good on something bad, than just plain bad. IM on muchmusic, why not? IM on a major label? sure! It's only music, we decide whether or not we're going to be owned by a corporation. And after all that, I'm setting my alarm so I can wake up early enough to see the fine folks of Immaculate Machine on the NEW VI. BTW: If anyone from the NEW VI sees this, I'm looking for work. - Wed, 9 Feb 2005 6:11pm

So here's looking forward to the live show on Saturday! Who and what are these "BELLA"? - Wed, 9 Feb 2005 11:21pm

James User Info... | Hello Brooke, James here. As I read the debate about the so-called evils of corporate television I can’t help but wonder what would Kant think? Mill would absolutely be for it as you brought happiness to thousands of kids who like local live music and simply understand that the world works in a certain way, and as much as you would like to bypass the system, it is impossible, the best one can do is stay original and try not to legitimize it. Good work and good performance, or so I heard. - Sat, 12 Feb 2005 12:10am
