It's still going to cost a fortune for bands to get over to the island. And judging by the first few announced shows, I wouldn't hold your breath.

Rod Stewart!

Sarah McLaughlin!

World Curling Championships!

a-mac has brought up an excellent point, one that rarely gets mentioned when discussing what big musical acts will now come to Victoria. On a tour where you're playing consecutive nights, the road crew needs to pack up immediately after the show, get on the road and arrive in the next city in order to set up the stage & gear. The earliest anyone is getting off this island is 7am, and the earliest they'll get to Vancouver is 9am. This obviously isn't a problem all the time, as we already have 2 big name acts coming our way. But I imagine it could be a factor for many acts when deciding whether to spend the time & money to make the trip over.

In terms of the local scene, I don't see how a venue that seats thousands of people will benefit local artists. Victoria has trouble even filling a bar/pub, even when great local bands are playing.

I'd like to see something like this new Local Legends Live at Legends every Wednesday take off. Wouldn't it be awesome to see Legends packed every Wednesday to see some local talent?

Local radio could also be doing a lot more for the bands in town. The Zone's Band of the Month statement of "aggressively promoting local bands" is a bit of a stretch. I haven't heard a single BOTM song played on the Zone since I can't even remember. I remember hearing The Special Guests (Jets Overhead), Armchair Cynics on Extreme107.3 all the time. Sure, the Zone has a bunch of band links of their website, but they're a radio station - play the music on the radio!!! Is it because people just aren't requesting the songs? I don't know what it is, but it needs improving, that's for sure. - Sat, 15 Jan 2005 11:18am

Legends will not get full to watch local bar bands play. I have never been to any city anywhere that cared that much.

The local active music scene is small... very small. The guys in the business of it have said on here MANY times, that its for the love, not the profit, b/c you guys don't pack their bars, complain about tickets prices and don't have enough friends to drag out with you.

The arena will be great for allowing:

A) Bands a chance to open for larger established acts
B) Kids a chance to see the larger acts, get inspired, start a band, stay in Victoria. Save money.
C) Perhaps some travelling festivals will come to town. Sometimes they set up a "B" stage where smaller acts play between sets. - Sat, 15 Jan 2005 12:18pm

...oh in Vancouver (and Meatlocker 7 has done this too)... after a giant show in your genre of rock, you play after at Steamers, Logans or Lucky, and give everyone a discount who went to the big concert to see your show and keep partying. Have a friend stand outside the gates and hand out flyers after the show lets out... - Sat, 15 Jan 2005 12:27pm

My guess is that the arena will help more than hurt. It will not fix our problems (we still need a year-round big venue like the Commodore - the Curling Club really sucks) but it is better than a kick in the nuts.
Of course, people that like to complain will bitch whether there's an arena or not. Me? I don't see how it could be a bad thing, even if we only get one or two acts a year. It's better than nothing. No? - Tue, 18 Jan 2005 12:05pm

big name acts will do well here.
i don't think the arena will help locals.
i went to the moneyshot show the other night it was dead and i thought they had some exposure locally and nationally but peolple don't really care about local unknown bands. and why shoud they, the band that opened for moneyshot was terrible. they were out of time and couldn't sing and it sounded like they were ripping off every other punk band. we left because the group i was with couldn't stand the racket. so we went to evilution and listened to some canned music and it was fucking busy in there. i ran into a bunch of people who i'd expect to run into at the moneyshot show. - Tue, 18 Jan 2005 12:11pm

I don't think the new arena will do anything for local acts, except maybe in a verrrry general spin-off capacity (such as the same-genre after-hours shows mentioned previously). The only acts booked there will be big-name ones such as the ones already slated to play (hopefully they won't all suck so much though). I'd be very surprised if a local band ever got to play there even in an opening capacity (I'll keep my fingers crossed though).
Mostly I'm just excited at the chance to see a big-name act in my home town. - Wed, 19 Jan 2005 5:24pm

When the new arena opened in Kelowna we got all the tour festivals like molson canadian rocks and big name groups that old people and teenage girls would go to. But what we got more of then anything else was touring musical theatre shows and ice skating shows. - Wed, 19 Jan 2005 5:53pm

I think the arena is going to give this isolated, sheltered, island music community we live in a little bit of exposure to what the music industry is like everywhere else.
Not sure if that's a good thing or not. The general lack of exposure to mainstream acts allows artists here to do what they want without the usual scrutiny and develop some unique ideas, that wouldn't be given a chance in alot of other cities. Would be a shame if that gets lost.

Oh, and btw....What are you talking about, dead? There was over 300 people at the moneyshot cd release. People in this town definitely support local bands. When you travel around this country a bit playing shows, you really start appreciate the amount of support live music and art actually DOES get in victoria. You can watch live music every single night of the week here, and Victoria's really not that big. Go check out edmonton sometime. - Thu, 20 Jan 2005 8:02pm

Well said Josh! I'd stand behind the statement made about people going out after the big shows and I beleive in a very small way that the arena will help. It's too bad that wig left the show so early cause it was a great night. On Edmonton: I don't know for sure but people I've talked to have said there's a thriving scene there. - Sat, 22 Jan 2005 9:56am

As much as I'd love to see some big name acts come to Vic and play at our new arena... I think it'll be far and few between... we have had a few big shows here over the years eg: Alice Cooper 1987 at Memorial Arena

One problem with getting big names here, is since this is an island, they have extra costs incurred by the ferries, let alone the extra bullshit...

But as for it's impact on the local scene... I'd love to see some kind of all day local festival there, I think it could bring in enough revenue to break even there, and the city should promote something like that anyways... we are a tourist town...

Why couldn't they have just kept the name Memorial Arena.... who's going to want to play the "Save-on Foods Center" - Mon, 24 Jan 2005 12:13pm

like the people playing there are going to care what the name of the place is.
many arenas have sponors, staples center, sky reach center, general motors place, plus many more i can't think of.
when ever jimmy pattersons contract expires they may sell the rights to the name to the next multimillion dollar company like wallmart, home depot, costco, tim hortons, macdonalds, i could go on. - Mon, 24 Jan 2005 2:52pm

yo josh,
it was to bad i missed your show, i have the CD and it's very good.i also bought a shirt.
we arrived way to early, cause i feared it would sellout and the people i was with weren't into the opening band and i promissed them that moneyshot would be worth the wait but i was overruled. i tried to expose people that don't go to live shows to a good show, we should have shown up a midnight instead of 9:30.
i'll be out to suppot you again like i have several times in the past. - Mon, 24 Jan 2005 3:29pm

cheers, wig

and mike, i don't know what the metal scene is like, but we tend to have WAY better shows in calgary than in edmonton most of the time. Just three days ago (saturday) we had over 300 out to our show at brew bros pub in calgary, the promoter was as good as they come, and we got hooked up with the best alberta weed we've ever had, at BC prices.
Our last edmonton show was with the red hot lovers last november for a basically empty bar with bunch of skinheads who couldn't have given a shit about the bands. Between us and RHL, we decided edmonton was a hunk of shit town for music, at least for rock n roll. To be fair, we were over at seedy's on the downtown side, and the downtown is tough to get people out to in Edmonton. We've had way better shows over on whyte ave in the past.

the west edmonton mall water park is ALWAYS a good time though. - Tue, 25 Jan 2005 10:36am

I wonder if the promoters bailed because finishing in time is looking so sketchy, or if there was some sort of official word from the builder.
