With Sarah Mclachlan (Two Dates) and Rod Stewart March 26th ($79 and $119.00) what is going to come to Victoria's new arena that does not suck? Rod Stewart really turned into a whiner when he started on about never winning a grammy! - Thu, 2 Dec 2004 3:57am

For anyone who want's to see Alternica, they might show up. Now that there is a venue large enough for their heads.
ACDC might come aswell. For anyone who has'nt seen them yet, you should it's a good show. I dont Know if I would go again. They're slowing down with the old age. - Thu, 2 Dec 2004 12:40pm

I know the first inclination is to slag the arena. It's not built; the only concerts booked are Rod Stewart and Sarah McLachlan; the stupid name - the list of negatives goes on. But I do believe in time it will ben a plus to Victoria.
I've been told first-hand by the main concert promoters in Vancouver that above and beyond the usual stuff (Hilary Duff, Avril Lavinge, etc.) there's a very strong possibility we will also get our share of decent shows (Pearl Jam, the Warped Tour, David Bowie, etc.)
Another positive are opening acts. Though some headliners may suck, some bring along really cool, lesser-known bands that a lot of us would have travelled to Vancouver to see. Think about it.
Be patient. All we complained about in the past was, "If we only had an arena..." Now that we have finally one, quit slagging. Good acts will come.
But it's also worth mentioning that the arena fits 7,500 people. Is U2 going to come? Is that financially viable? Hell no. But Bob Dylan could, or Jane's Addiction, or Dr. Dre. Believe me, once the word is out there's another arena to make money at in B.C., acts will route their tours through here. Guaranteed. - Fri, 3 Dec 2004 10:50am

that might be a good point. But think of all the really good bands that COULD come to victoria but dont. not that there isnt a venue. I saw the strokes in vancouver they sold out like a 2500(?) person room (thats a guesstimate), how many fit in commodore? or croation cultural centrre? its not like there arent places in victoria that could house that size of show. Occasionally semi-big bands do come... eg sparta, de la soul, gwar, public enemy but most bands are too cheap to come. Im sure we will se lots of shows come to the arean but it will be crap like Rita Macneil (no offense to all you Rita-fans out there) or some country shit.
The only chance of anything decent would be snoop, he will play anywhere (i think he played prince george last year) - Fri, 3 Dec 2004 11:41am

By the time most bands are popular enough to play at a venue of that size their music already sucks anyway . - Fri, 3 Dec 2004 12:25pm

The Curling Club is the only venue locally on par with the Croatian Cultural or the Commodore, and it is only open half the year. The Royal Theatre is smaller, and too expensive. I know what sold-out shows at the Royal bring home, and it ain’t worth the risk when acts are getting $100,000 up front.
I’d say the blame isn’t on the band, but the promoters. Not that it’s their fault. Victoria is an expensive city to put big shows into, and unless it is a band guaranteed to sell out the Curling Club, it’s a slim chance there is money to be made. So promoters shy away from it, and for good reason.
Local promoters can not bring bands like the Strokes to town, because unless they have a string of three of four dates with the band, it is not financially feasible. A one-off show with a band that big requires a steep ticket price, and Victoria people will bitch until the cows come home. It won’t sell out, and the promoter will lose their shirt or be unwilling to try again in the future.
That leaves it up to House of Blues and Clear Channel, who do 90% per cent of the bookings in Canada. They don’t have the best track record in Victoria (remember Bad Religion? Only 900 people showed and they lost mucho denero). That will likely change when the dollars start rolling in with the new arena. Say what you want: Rod Stewart may suck, but there’s 7,000 suburban housewives who loves his action. It will be sold out, promoters will be happy, and they will likely take more chances in the future - the Royal, the Curling Club, whatever. - Fri, 3 Dec 2004 12:27pm

if Rod wasn't so much, I think it would fun... in a sort of strange and interesting way...

You will probably see all the big Canadian guys coming to town. Your Sum 41s, Our Lady Peace, Nickelbacks, Billy Talants, The Hip, or any of those Canadian Tour package things they do like Edgefest and stuff. Like it was said earlier, lots of great chances to see some new up and comers openning up. Maybe the odd local band will get the nod.

Personally, looking forward to the hockey. - Fri, 3 Dec 2004 4:12pm

Kinda nutty that our beloved Salmon Kings have the shittiest w/l in the ECHL.

/prepeared to bring peanuts and ball bearings to first game, IF they ever complete the arena. I believe they're saying Feb. My bet: Sept.

i think the 7500 seat limit is a little low. Too small to get the bigger arena bands, a little too big for smaller bands. I guess it depends on how much they charge to rent the venue.

but as for a band like ac/dc. They sold out 2 shows at the coliseum (well the 2nd one was either sold out or almost sold out, 1st one was sold out). Coliseum holds around 20,000 people. If they can draw numbers like that, why would they play here, when they could tack on an extra show closer to somewhere else on the tour that would bring in more cash.

I was rather bummed at the size they built that thing. I think 10,000-12,000 would of been a good lower end number. Allthough I don't know if victoria is big enough to support many bands at that amount of tickets.

ah well, we'll have to wait and see :) - Fri, 10 Dec 2004 2:17am

Seeing that it was built primarily as a hockey venue (the city only gave it persmission on the basis there was a team contracted to play there), that's probably why it was so small. With a few thousand fans traditionally the crowd at a local hockey game, it would look pretty stupid to have 9,000 empty seats - kind of like the B.C. Lions games at B.C. Place did before people started liking them again. - Fri, 10 Dec 2004 6:57am

Its a perfect sized arena for Vic......any bigger and it would always look empty. Sarha M and Rod S don't really turn my crank that much but if they have good sales it only helps us.

Bands always have the option of a "Concert Bowl" setup where the stage is setup in between the redline and the blueline playing towards one end of the arena. Keeps cost down because you ned less security/cleanup etc and they still get all the frills such as good power/beer sales etc.

Many bands even do this in Vancouver at GM and Pacific. Motley crue did it last time if I remember and I've seen Rob Zombie/White Zombie do it a zillion times...

I'm pretty sure the promoters will test the market with soemone like Sum 41 shortly. - Fri, 10 Dec 2004 2:15pm

Yeah, Ross B Ay is right. Rod Stewart is way cooler than anything else that could possibly come to that arena. A Rob Stewart concert where he was Dead at the time would be better than anything else the world has to offer. - Sat, 11 Dec 2004 12:00pm
