| [+} User Info... | In regard to postings dated November 8th & 9th by [+} re shady management going on in victoria. I hereby formally retract any and all statements Jinn may have found offensive regarding entries posted by me on http://www.livevictoria.com dated November 8th 2004 ( at 2:57PM). As mentioned previously, I left the establishment at the conclusion of my set (November 5th 2004) and therefore had no first hand knowledge of what transpired thereafter. I sincerely regret any inconvenience these statements may have caused the promoter and her associated companie(s). I have personally reached, via email, respondents for which email addresses were available, regarding posts mentioned above and requested each respondent cease further comments on this post. As well, the Webmaster for http://www.livevictoria.com was contacted via email (11/09/04) to promptly remove the online posts and corresponding threads. I have informed Jinn of progress to date in this regard. During a conversation with Jinn today November 10th 2004, as requested a copy of this post will be forwarded to the email address she provided. It is my intent in making this statement to bring this matter to a satisfactory conclusion for all parties. Right from the get go things seemed strange. I mentioned to her that I knew the guitarist in Foul Play and she didnt even know what I was talking about. If your going to promote a band, learn their names. Second, she had this kind of air to her like she was the most importatnt agent in victoria and that everything she touched turned to gold. She would also always drop the fact that she was based out of L.A, yet gave me a victoria contact number. Some people just have this air that they are more important than they are. Promoters, booking agents, producers, etc. sure why not - But the whole big fish in a small pond scenerio seems pretty trite in my view. I think we should be happy that the bands that have gotten recognition around here have been able to do so by their own merit. That's a luxury you won't find in most places. A word of advice - before you go all out planning how you'll get your face on the cover of vice magazine via agents and managers - put on a good show, make your music accesible, amputate the PR team and make up some good merch and book some shows outside victoria. The best thing about that is it's not that hard and you don't run the risk of someone putting their lame ass sprott-shaw hand in your pockets. - Wed, 17 Nov 2004 12:05am | ||

There are so many bands in Victoria, I always hear of what I think are new ones but apparently they've been around for awhile. Maybe Brand X should get out more. I know I need to. | Zippgunn User Info... | A facinating thread. Despite my considerable involvement in the local scene I have never heard of Foul Play nor have I ever heard of this Jinn person and I don't know what transpired between these two to provoke the contrite retraction that starts off this post. But I can guess that it's something along the lines of this: new young band desperate to get noticed by the big labels gets involved with a wannabe manager/promoter type who promises the moon yet somehow fails to deliver. Band complains on a public forum and the M/P decides to act tough and threatens to sue said band. This kind of horseshit happens everywhere all the time and it's sad to see young bands getting their hopes up only to be dissapointed by the false promises or inabilty of people to deliver on promises. I'll tell you one thing: from my perspective I have grave doubts about this Jinn person's ability to do anything useful in Victoria, other than to threaten people with lawsuits (hardly a way to endear yourself to a small tightly knit scene). I also have my doubts about the collective intellegence of the Foul Play crew. I'll ask the question I always ask bands to ask their potential handlers; " if you're such a bigshot in L.A. (or New York or London or Toronto or wherever) what are you doing slumming in the backwater of Victoria?". 99% of the time when I encounter one of these hotshots and do my homework (dig into their past lives in their respective big cities) I find that they were unsuccessful in those markets and in many cases are essentially persona non grata in those markets. They then find their way to Victoria and regale us bumpkins with stories of their power and influence in the big city, most of which turn out to be fiction. A good rule of thumb is that if someone is a big city hotshot then they stay in the big city and do their thing there, not in small towns like Victoria, and if they do sully their conciousness with a backwater like Victoria they concentrate on established bands not ones starting out. I hope Foul Play have learned something with all this. As for Jinn I would have to suggest that if you can't take criticism on a public message board (and, to be honest, I don't know exactly what was said here) then perhaps you should get into another line of work. And I don't have a clue what happened between these folks and this Jinn character; it was just the ever so contrite retraction that set my bullshit detector off and got me interested. Maybe the webmasters should just have scotched the whole thread to prevent cretins like me from speculating on this matter. | foulplay User Info... | Yeah, you're probably right - we haven't received that much attention in awhile. But a short story: Foul Play formed in '98, almost got famous, took a hiatus, then reformed a couple of years ago with some adjustments. We just wanted to play, have fun. Jinn came along about a month ago, said she could help out with bookings, I said sure, things got really tense, we no longer required her services. A thread was started regarding the antics that went on at Steamer's, thread had to be retracted. I need about 500 pages to tell the story. Maybe I'll write a book. I'll probably get famous doing that instead. Not available in stores though. Order now! Operators are standing by. And I didn't think I was that old...or 'well-seasoned' as someone said.
