A battle of the bands is apparently not one of the more popular Valentine's Day dates, especially with Elton John in town! However the small but enthusiastic audience got more than they bargained for with this eclectic mix.

Kids Today showed up with an actual Hammond organ and Leslie speaker and set the room ablaze with their instrumental funk/ jazz fusion. A three piece featuring two keyboards (one the aforementioned Hammond) and drums, these guys certainly filled all the spaces, with the Hammond player never missing a beat on the bottom end. Next on stage were Sea- Sekshun, who after a rather half hearted version of Santoria (is there a band today that hasn't covered a Sublime song?) as soundcheck, turned the energy levels to eleven and tore through their half hour set like there was no tomorrow. Taut guitars and some rather tasty vocal harmonies are hallmarks of this band, and with a little more stage experience under the belt this band will be one to watch. Then Handsome Distraction took the stage. These guys were definitely ready to tear it up, opting out of a soundcheck and just leaping into it. There is no question that this is a band that knows its stuff. Excellent stage presence and refined arrangements kept my attention as the two guitarists battled it out over a thunderous rhythm section. The bass player (like most) is definitely entertaining to watch and listen to. Audio here: http://www.simplify.com.br/martin/Music/Battle%20of%20Bands/Handsome%20Distraction.mp3

A great night, there's definitely been some amazing acts playing Felicita's lately. If you haven't already checked it out, the semi-finals will be running each Monday through March, culminating in the finals at Vertigo on March 26th. Congratulations to all the bands, and thanks for some great shows! - Wed, 16 Feb 2011 1:43pm Edited: Tue, 22 Feb 2011 11:56am
