Monster Records has lowered out rates for the winter months. $250/day gives you a full day in a professional studio with myself as the engineer, whether it's one song, a full album, or if you just need some mixing done.

Here is the link to examples of my work: http://www.monsterecords.com/music

There is also a gear list on the website that lists most of the wicked pieces of gear we own.

What does a full day entail? 6 hours? 8 hours? As much abuse as we can inflict upon you in a 24 hour period?

The website outlines Mr. Harper's successes, but what are your personal qualifications?

Thanks for the info. - Sun, 28 Nov 2010 5:54pm

24 hours of abuse would be a little much I think. Typical work day 8-10 hours was what I meant. My artist list is nowhere near Kristian's obviously as he has a good 14 years on me. The best thing to do is to listen to examples of my work on the link provided. Everything from track 4 - 7 on the website is something I've produced/engineered/mixed. I can send you more examples of a specific genre if you want.

I've worked on material ranging from Hip-Hop to Electronic to Rock to Folk.

Here is a list of artists I've worked wtih:
Bigger Fish Than Guns, Light and the Raven, Celebrity Traffic, Goodbye Beatdown, Opera Club, Humans, RA the Rugged Man, Mindil Beach Markets, Fight in the Fields, and Techromancer.

Thanks for the interest. - Sun, 28 Nov 2010 6:44pm

Do you have any examples of something a little heavier? eg hard rock, metal, punk.

We are looking to record our new EP early new year and we are currently looking into different studios.

We are recording all our bed tracks (to a click) in our own jam space so if you're interested we could show you a bit of what you would be working with.

cheers

Standard demo (6-8 tracks) runs about 2-3 days. A day to record and 2 days fer overdubs/correct the fuckup's. $750 for 3 days seems a bit overpriced, but I guess it depends what needs to be done. In theory, you'd need to sell at least a hundred demos to cover the cost (from my logic at this state :). - Wed, 29 Dec 2010 7:31pm

$750 for a 6-8 track demo is pretty dam cheap if you ask me; given that its a high quality recording... whens the last time you looked into a recording studio there griph?
(you must also assume a "full day" means 12 hrs; which also breaks down to $21/hr... which is by all standards, CHEAP)

If you even took the time to go to their site; you would've already noticed that they have good equipment and from the samples they have, know how to use it*(depending on what your looking for of course!). - Thu, 30 Dec 2010 2:17pm

It seems that a lot of Victoria musicians have the mentality that $250 for a day is overpriced, but if you have a look at the studio, you will notice that this is not an amateur studio. Our rates compared to other higher-end studios on the island are half or less than half the cost.

I recently went to Calgary for a band we just finished called Bigger Fish Than Guns. It was their CD release party and after visiting a few local studios, the average was in fact about $750 per day.

Some musicians want the basement studio prices, more concerned about how many CDs they have to sell to get back to even, instead of being concerned about making a product they are proud of and is worth listening to. If you are a good band, you will easily sell 100 CDs. A good CD is an investment and often long term.

On the other hand, some Victoria musicians feel that they have to leave the island to find quality studios and pay big bucks to get something amazing, when in reality there are a few amazing studios on the island. Infinity Studios, Baker Studios, The Woodshop, and our studio Monster Records all can bang out amazing work.

Basement recorded albums and cheap studios are fine for bands wanting to just get something out there, but if you look at the gear and compare our rates to other relative studios, you may find that our rates are in fact very low.

Cheers,

I think that is a great price considering the quality of the recordings you're getting. You've got nothing to explain. Cheers, Lucius - Fri, 31 Dec 2010 8:21am

I personally want to start up my own recording studio in town sometime but anyone saying that 250 bucks a day is expensive is borderline retarded. If you look at the mics alone this studio has the price is worth it but then you see they have a nice board, good converters, nice outboard etc. if the engineer has any talent at all, the recordings should come out very nicely.

Then again, you could always go buy yourself the bare minimum to record your band at your home, m-audio converters and preamps, a couple sm57s and a drum mic kit and after spending 2 or 3 grand, you get to do it all yourself and get a product that sounds an 1/8th as good as someone that knows what they are doing.

The music industry has changed but people still gotta eat man! - Fri, 31 Dec 2010 1:02pm

Agreed... $250 for the day (8-10hrs as quoted above) is a super price for what they seem to be producing. Obviously the engineer is going to have a huge effect on the final product but thats pretty much bargain basement prices he's offering right there.

and Griph that would be 750$ before mixing.

Noise floor up in the ladysmith seems to be doing some nice stuff too....

and for those bands looking to 'just get something out there'... i hear Runway Studios will give you something to be proud of. - Fri, 31 Dec 2010 7:09pm Edited: Fri, 31 Dec 2010 7:14pm

True, I must be thinking of old costs, course the only studio I really hung around was Rat's Nest (I miss those days), but now I think about it, the price Monster records mentioned is cheap. Curious, do any studios still use reel to reel tape for that warm analog sound?!? ;)

If it weren't for places like Talk's Cheap and Lyle's Place (I'd say Ditch but I dunno if they sell local stuff) bands wouldn't have anywhere to sell there music. Even then, there are a few demos that are near impossible to get locally (for instance, where do you find the latest Lesbian Fist Magnet CD?, on and speaking of which...). - Sat, 1 Jan 2011 12:33am Edited: Sat, 1 Jan 2011 12:43am

heh i remember meeting you at rat's nest years ago if my memory serves me correct(phil right?)... dont get me wrong, I love the rats nest and what Gary's done for tons of musicians in and around the province! But if you're looking to take your music to the next level, like the afformentioned, you need to go to a studio with better equipment.
As for selling the cd's... we have ZERO cd's in any shops around town and have sold a couple hundred just at local shows... not to mention what we would sell if we went on tour. Also, having your cd in a shop also cuts your profits(the middle man effect). At the end of the day, bands now-a-days shouldn't have to rely on record shops(I speak mainly of local up and coming bands or locally established bands... a signed and marketed band on a label is totally different) there's just too many ways to distribute your own material, yourself.

Honestly, I sorta remember meeting you (I got fucked up over 6 years ago, I haven't been the same since), I was way more enthusiastic about the scene when I met ya. Then I got disappointed, which is typical. It's my own fault, really. I talk a lot of shit about the scene, but I don't mean any harm by it, if what I say gets butts moving, so be it. You have to remember, Brainless does an OK job. True, he might not be someone to get quality work from (no offense I hope), but he's a resource for bands (the demo work gives a band something to work with). You have to remember, a lot of well known bands have recorded/played at the Nest, it still blows me away! (eg. NoMeansNo playing there with 2 drummers for instance.) - Tue, 11 Jan 2011 1:25am Edited: Thu, 13 Jan 2011 7:18pm

Brandon, thanks for the plug...I might also add my good friend Paul Keims' studio "Dove Creek Studios" in Courtenay to that list. He has great rooms, amazing gear and is very good at what he does.

$250 a day is RIDICULOUSLY cheap for what you offer. Anyone suggesting that you're overpriced is totally clueless.

Having to sell 100 units is not an unatainable challenge...
