homOpeth are a great example of emo kids being metal, they just do it well. Besides, we all know that metal is not about the music, but how cool you look at the shows. Fashion, people, is where you can truly succeed. Fuck talent, conviction, or any of that other bullshit that just gets in the way. Go out, get yer bullet belt, your denim vest, grow yer hair and you'll do just fine. Just don't smile, for christ sakes, don't smile. - Tue, 24 Aug 2004 12:33pm

Lew, I am sorry, but that was THE most retarded comment I have heard in my entire life. Opeth have about as much in common with emo as Vital Remains have with elton john... - Fri, 27 Aug 2004 2:38am

You may hate Opeth, but if you can seriously sit there and tell me Orchid and Morningrise, extremely great melodic death metal albums are emo, then you really just wouldn't know metal if it bit you on the ass. I am not saying their aren't elements of prog or jazz in it, but emo has literally NOTHING to do with Opeth.. hell you are talking about a band from another continent, they don't even know what the hell emo is.. - Fri, 27 Aug 2004 2:41am

That's right, I forgot. Emo only exists in the good ole U S of A, my apologies.

I still think Homopeth are emotional. If you can't notice a blatantly ignorant statement, well, then go back to your well-worn At the Drive-In LPs, comb your frosted bangs across your face and cry in the corner.

And I heard that Glen Benton is going to be doing a duet with Elton John at the next MMVA's in order to temper his homophobic image. They'll be performing "One Tin Soldier", I've heard. Pbbbthth - Sun, 12 Sep 2004 9:50am

There is no doubt that Opeth is an emotional band. However, there is nothing whiny nor annoying about them whatsoever. To call them emo because they deal (SOMETIMES) with emotional topics . . . now that is the blatantly ignorant statement. - Sun, 12 Sep 2004 10:53am

Orchid are emocore, not 'melodic deathmetal'. At the Gates are melodic deathmetal. While we're on the subject, every metalcore band from USA is trying to be At the Gates and failing miserably. That includes Darkest Hour. - Sun, 12 Sep 2004 11:19pm

geebus.. what tree did you hit on the way down canon? Opeth's "ORCHID" album is melodic death metal with prog/jazz touches here and there. Hence why I said their "Orchid" and "Morningrise" albums are great melodic death metal. At The Gates has been DEAD for years and I don't know why EVERYONE always mentions them, usually I find only people who like either surface metal or are newbies to death metal mention them as if its the only band they can think of (not necessarily saying that of you canon.docre)... At The Gates had their most interesting material under the name Grotesque, the Garden's Of Grief EP and the 2 first AtG albums anyways. Other than that I really couldn't give a shit for all this new emo/metal/core generic crap that the loudkids eat up. - Sun, 12 Sep 2004 11:39pm

For some reason I thought you meant the BAND Orchid, who are emocore, you might understand my confusion on that.

However, don't try to out old-school me, everyone knows The Red in the Sky is Ours is the best ATG album and that Grotesque suck. - Wed, 15 Sep 2004 6:20pm

Oh my god listen to you tits, it's a fucking joke from a deathmetal POV.

Learn to have a sense of humor and realize that for METAL Opeth is a total non stop sob story, as good as they may be they certainly have nothing in the brutality department and are quite meloncholy...

Jesus fucking christ I'm getting quite tired of turning on the lightbulbs for you people... get yourselves a flashlight, and LIGHTEN THE FUCK UP!!!!!

But if seriousness is what you cry for then here is some:

Please explain to me what part of Orchid equals death into the metal?(Or the entirety of all that is Opeth for that matter)

I think it's more fittingly just MELODIC METAL, why is it death???, because buddy does a few deep growls?
With the genre that has been moulded in the "melodic death" name, Opeth certainly isin't really fitting the bill... Kalmah, CoB, Inflames, ATG, yes but please do explain Opeth to me as you all seem so itching to do so.
If you people really don't think this is the most mellow band associated with metal, then you obviously wouldn't know brutality if it came and bit YOU on the ass.
Any band that makes Katatonia seem brutal sure as hell is not any form of "death metal".

*for the record I like Opeth, it's my replacement for coffee shop tunes or candlelight crap I guess you could say, but trying to say theyre not totally emotional and rather mellow, is just fucking retarded, hence, my emo joke... HAHA?... jesus corpsefucking christ.* - Wed, 15 Sep 2004 6:47pm

I know I am more old school than you Canon hehe :) but I think Grotesque killed and I definitely like their material alot better at that point, just because you don't like it doesn't mean "it sucked", thats just your opinion, eh to each their own. And further on your point lew.. I don't really think of Kalmah/CoB/In Flames as melodeath either.. its all melodic metal pretty much.. AtG does have way more to do with death metal even up to SotS.. Katatonia's old stuff was doomdeath, Dance Of December Souls was fantastic and Brave Murder Day was also doomdeath, so yeah that stuff has much more in common with a harsher sound, I don't think their stuff was really much your thing though Lew, you can check out my copies if you want though. - Wed, 15 Sep 2004 8:08pm

Who do you speak of andrew? Katatonia?

I got all their albums ages ago man, my fav song = Endtime which I'll still listen to from time to time, as for the rest, it has lost it's appeal as I have heard it too much and their more recent albums, well the clean vocals everywhere aren't really my bag...

Again, coffee ambience...

Doesn't really quench that metal thirst for me...

I also think the bands called "melodic death metal" don't really fit the description, however what has been labeled to fit in the genre, are those sorts of bands listed above, agreed they would be more accurately dubbed as just melodic metal as well...

But they're not... too bad as it then forces bands whith melody and alot more death who whould ring true to the label to be described as "heavy melodic death metal" which just seems odd...

I would have gone with heavy melodic metal to describe the general bands being called "melodic death metal" but, meh, what ya gonna do eh? - Fri, 17 Sep 2004 12:09pm

I didn't know there was a huge difference between melodeath and melodic metal?

Lew what you should say was you "downloaded" their albums a while ago (teasing, teasing!), but yeah as I said I didn't think they would be your cup of tea (or coffee?? haha). And Denise is right, like what you like, it shouldn't matter.. although I certainly hate misinformation, but I guess its all personal perspective isn't it? However, I think one should be able to express themselves and be able to disagree with others and allow space for discussion (obviously I didn't do a good job of that this time).

And I have to agree that "The Red In The Sky Is Ours" is the best album under the ATG monicker. - Sat, 18 Sep 2004 8:53pm

Wow you girls are funny.

I was talking about categorizing genres here...

*Inserts Lightbulb Emoticon*

Please explain to me how making comments on the name of a musical genre has anything to do with advocating that you should only listen to "something" and not "what you like"???

Strange train of thought you have... Not to mention totally off key implications.

Tisk tisk...

This just goes to further prove that you can't talk about anything on this board without someone saying or implicating something completely out of context... :\

*Even if it's myself doing it... hey wait a minute... Did I just do it now??? :o * - Sun, 19 Sep 2004 6:30pm
