I wrote this last week and got busy/forgot about it:

Anyone into local metal knew what a killer lineup this was! I wasn't sure who FD were, but it turned out it was the vocalist from Cradle to Grave. Sounded pretty good to me and worth checking out again.

Sinned were brilliant. Kenny Banger was saying how the vocals are getting meatier. I haven't noticed that per say, but his delivery of whatever lyrics he's singing is getting more and more intense with every show. As usual we were ecstatic. They've all become such skilled players.
You know, if they weren't our contemporaries... if they weren't such cool, fairly young, approachable guys... if they weren't a newer band than some of the others in the genre around here... they'd have been given a lot more regard (by the more casual metal fans) for their musical accomplishments. So they've earned it the hard way and these days are getting one ton of respect for their capabilities from those of us who matter, AND those of us who don't. haha.

I say all this because Tyrants Blood were on the bill, and from the very beginning TB were treated with all sorts of respect, which was of course warranted given their pedigree... age... size! But even then, they were a newer band, and it does take time to gel and define a sound. I was always zeroed in on Matt, who no one can deny is a rare & gifted drummer, so it didn't really matter to me what anyone else was doing, tho they were always one of our great bands, and solos & vocals always caught my ear.
I haven't seen them in too long a time, and all I could think was, well, the MIGHTY have just become MIGHTIER! A few of us were disappointed that Tom couldn't play due to surgery, but each and every one of the others have fully become the MASSIVE characters we know them as and want them to be in the way they played their instruments and expressed themselves. There was no faultering from any of them, and I can say it was a privilege to zero in on any one of them that night. That guy doesn't just look amazing, he sounds amazing too. Really happy to see all that come together and its pretty much a guarantee that next show with Tom back in the fold will be huge.
And their backdrop was one of the coolest I've seen.

You know its a great show when every band's potentially cheesy/wanky guitar solos which you sometimes expect to patiently sit through hold up perfectly in midst of the storm and elicit genuine ROARS from the crowd.

It also takes some real professionals to keep focussed and fight through incessant technical problems. These bands came out on top in spite of some of the most unfortunate & distracting sound issues, and their fans stayed with them too! WE TRIUMPHED!

And Pestilence were amazing, but I was so far gone after our locals impressing us all to bits, that they were just icing on the cake. They hadn't been here in 20 years, and it was another example of one of those old bands completely blowing us away again instead of resting on past laurels & fading back into the shadows. All 'round killer show.

Truth be told throwing horns rarely comes naturally to me and I don't like to encourage it since its overuse sickens me. But whether it was up high to the bands or more discretely to all the truly exceptional metal musicians & fans who attended that show, I found myself doing it more times than I can ever remember doing it before. That's got to say something. - Sat, 19 Jun 2010 4:55pm

How does Tom getting a penis enlargement interfere with his guitar playing? He holds his axe up near his armpits anyway. - Mon, 21 Jun 2010 5:46pm
