Well, I try to avoid starting reviews about my own shows, but I just wanted to say a few things about the show last night.

Kohurshuhn: My God .. these are some of the best musicians in Victoria if not further abroad. Seriously.. damn.

Watching Joe rip it up on bass made me want to go home and start taking bass lessons .. assuming I could ever be that technically fantastic, which I don't even know if it's worth aspiring to at this point. I'm quite sure we'll be seeing more of him as time goes on because that level of talent does not go unnoticed forever.

Nik -- as I said to him a couple of times last night, Victoria is going to miss him. In the same way that Joe owns the bass, Nik owns the guitar.. the fact that they're brothers makes perfect sense as you get the same palpable sense of casual know-how from both guys. I really hope that Nik finds happiness in Japan, and I honestly believe he is going to be crazy successful because he has the soul of Eddie Van Halen's love child with like Joe Satriani or something. Speaking of Van Halen -- Kohurshuhn's covers (of which there were many) were phenomenal. A lot of guys might cover great guitarists like Van Halen in a perfunctory kind of way, but Nick actually INHABITS those solos, and when Nick and Joe team up to sing material from Guns and Roses, Iron Maiden, etc, the fact that they can do what they do on those instruments and sing that well at the same time is really impressive.

Chad is a drumming monster.. how anyone can sing lead vocals like that while drumming (and doing so very well, I might add) is a real treat. When they switched from cover mode into Kohurshuhn originals you could really see Chad's influences and talent come to the forefront. The guy is a total pro, and knows how to hit those skins with a real practiced ease -- he played very tastefully as well, doing just what the songs needed rather than trying to cram his skill down the band's throat. Absolutely pro.

And these may be some of the nicest guys around -- another reason why it will be sad to see Nik go. All in all, it was pleasure playing with Kohurshuhn on their last show (for now).

Smokin Rockets were very solid as well and definitely knew their material and each other very well musically. It was cool they came down from Cowichan to play with us, and I hope they had a good time. Also their bassist was very nice to my amp, so I appreciate that.

Musically they were quite talented and I especially noticed their drummer for some reason -- there were some moments during a couple of their faster songs where he did these rapid-fire snare hits that were spot on and sounded awesome. Our singer commented that they reminded him a bit of Pennywise, which is not a bad thing by any stretch.

As for Year of the Rat, aside from me repeatedly kicking out one of my cables due to the awkward placement of power on the stage last night (hasn't been a problem in the past, but if I hadn't brought my own power bar I don't what I would have done) I think we played a good show. In any case, we had a lot of fun, and I met lots of cool people who came down to see us (thank you Steve Klipper) and we seemed to have made some new fans, so what else can you ask for, really? - Fri, 18 Jun 2010 10:38am

Despite my better judgement I dragged my lazy self down to EVO on a thursday. When I got there @ 930, there was one other person there depsite the show starting @ 930 like the ad said. Anyways, people quickly showed up and got the night started around 10'ish.

The first band: Smoking Rockets were alright, I much preferred the songs that the guitar player was singing. Not so much for the singing but the songs were just better. When they played the slower groovier stuff they sounded more comfortable then the heavier more punky stuff.
IMO, they should do that style more and stay away from the faster stuff but what do I know. SHOTS! SHOTS! and more SHOTS!

The Second band: Year of the Rat, been wanting to see these guys for awhile (mostly from all the live vic posts). Me and a couple buds were very impressed with the singer by his range, phrasing, and ability to hold the crowd. The lead guitar player looked like he didn't want to be up there. He was staring at his feet for 90% of the night, but his playing was pretty good. The drummer has been around the block, it seems, as he looked like he was having fun. The bass player sounded great but I was in the back and actually didn't see him at all from behind those brace walls. These guys are either just finishing up their CD or they are finished. Either way I'll be getting a copy as I'd like to hear more of the singer.

Kohurshun: I left early because I had to be up a 6. Sorry Nick, i'll see you Japan. BTW, i'm stealing your brother to start a band..woohoo!

Stay cool but don't freeze. Cheers, Luc - Fri, 18 Jun 2010 10:49am

Hey Lucius -- I'm glad you came out! I know Thursdays at Evo can be pretty hit or miss, but I thought it went pretty well in general. Of course there could always be more people but whatever.

I was the unseen bass player you mentioned, and I appreciate the comments! I assure you, though, Mike DID want to be there.. he's just got a bit of shoe-gazer's soul sometimes :)

I'll make sure you get a copy of the CD once we get the artwork worked out, etc. Look for a CD release show sometime this summer hopefully (hoping to get a weekend spot at V-Lounge or maybe Lucky).

Cheers! - Fri, 18 Jun 2010 12:47pm
