As far as I know, this will be the first Vancouver Island performance by " Rock Band Called Time". There has been quite a buzz about this band in Vancouver for some time now. I highly advise not missing this show. - Thu, 17 Jun 2010 5:08pm Edited: Thu, 17 Jun 2010 5:10pm

Can any of the two local bands that ended up playing comment on how this show went? - Mon, 12 Jul 2010 10:30am

They could, but no one does that kind of thing anymore.

I'll say a few words.

I showed up a few songs into Faceman. Lots of good riffs and the vocalist was very strong. Had a Chris Cornell of olden days sound about him. Solid and I am looking forward to seeing more!

Rock Band Called Time had that Vancouver Thin Lizzy swing going on. The vocals were kinda buried in the mix, so it was hard to tell if I liked them or not. But overall, Stew and Co. had some good music going on.

Left Pocket Dead are sounding more solid and full than before. I managed to stay for four songs, but I had to split. What I heard musically was top notch! The vocals were good for that style, but after a while they get to be too much for this old lame-o.

Not a bad turnout for a summer night on a Saturday.

GAh.. see, I thought, with CTW being over, somehow that became no show at all, hence, I missed it. Godammit.

this isn't the first time Mr Hell has extolled the virtues of Raspberry Wheat Ale. When I think ale, raspberry doesn't exactly leap to mind. - Tue, 13 Jul 2010 1:58pm

I don't know how soon you'll see Rock Band Called Time back as this was only their 4th show ever.. and they really didn't get treated well by the promoter who didn't give them enough to cover their trip to the island.

I know there was enough people there to cover the costs at 8 bucks but maybe the local bands decided to take a cut of the door rather than taking a hit to help cover the out of town band.. its a shame cause all those folks are in great bands that don't come over to the island too often. - Thu, 15 Jul 2010 11:41am

^Just to keep things from going too far down that road, there was no promoter involved & niether of the local bands took any money from the door.

According to Logan's about 45 people paid cover that night, so the take from the door was not enough to cover travel costs after the doorguy/soundguy costs were paid.

In my opinion, a good way to treat Vancouver bands is to give them $300 off the top to cover travel expenses, then split whatever's left equally among all the bands. - Thu, 15 Jul 2010 12:38pm

Fair enough Kyle, thanks for clearing that up! ... so I guess Logan's charges upwards of 200 bucks to put on a show these days? If so thats kind of a drag. - Thu, 15 Jul 2010 1:04pm

My understanding is that Logan's gets $200 from the door to cover their costs... - Thu, 15 Jul 2010 3:09pm

Through the years playing in Vancouver I have never had my travel expenses covered from playing a show. I played to packed houses and quarter full rooms but somehow we always paid out of pocket in the end.

So when I hear people get in a crying state about Vancouver bands not getting their travel expenses covered, my care-o-meter loses power completely and shuts off.

That being said, when the show I am putting on in October happens and the end of the night comes, I will be doing my best to cover the Vancouver band's travel expenses, and I hope when we go there on August 7th the same thing occurs. - Thu, 15 Jul 2010 5:30pm

not crying here mr hell.. just wondering what the circumstance was considering there were around 50 people who paid. if the local bands didn't take a cut of the door then alls good... they did what they could.

I wasn't aware that logans charged 200 bucks to put on a show.

and we all know that if CTW had played we wouldn't be having this discussion right now. - Thu, 15 Jul 2010 8:54pm

The sound man gets $150, the door guy gets $50 and Mihkel may take a booking fee depending on whether there was enough for the bands.

CTW or any other band may or may not have made it a sold out show. Summer shows seem to be hit and miss due to people being out of town camping and such. I find that July and August are tough for getting solid crowds just like the second half of December can be. I also find that Saturday shows generally get less turnout than Friday shows for a variety of reasons, although sometimes that isn't the case if the draw on Saturday is strong.

I thought it was pretty good turnout factoring in all those things. - Thu, 15 Jul 2010 10:11pm

150 bucks for scott to bury the vocals! wow.. thats a good gig.

anyway.. show was fun and I agree.. a decent enough turn out for 3 bands without much draw. - Thu, 15 Jul 2010 10:33pm

I played that night and had no problems with my my vocals. In fact I have nothing but respect for the way Scott does things, no bullshit. I usually don't even do sound checks when we play there and he has things sounding right by the end of the first song. - Fri, 16 Jul 2010 9:46am

200 bucks for a venue is not much money. try booking an all ager one of these days. paying for the venue and then having either your own p.a or renting a p.a and cables and mics and shit. plus at logans you get to eat food, have drinks, play foosball and listen to a sound system that is a lot better than your jam room 400 watt p.a squeelin in your ears. - Mon, 19 Jul 2010 3:23pm

Scott is definitely one of the best house engineers I have ever run across. Very refreshing to have a soundman who actually has some respect for the music being performed and doesn't simply reek contempt.

I agree it sucks to pay to play, but I guess that's the monkey on our backs... - Mon, 19 Jul 2010 4:21pm

I agree scott does a good job. He tries to make things work even tho he may not always love the music thats getting played.

its just unfortunate when a bar (not a promoter apparently) agrees to bring a band in from Vancouver and ends up taking the majority of the door. thats it!

When a promoter agree's to do a show they take the responsibility to pay out of pocket if they turnout isn't great.. its not written in stone but its the nice thing to do.

my purpose for bringing this up in this thread was to try and find out why RBCT didn't get covered.. thats all. they are friends and felt like they got the run around from whoever was responsible for paying out the bands..

I mean no disrespect to Scott, the other bands that played or to Logans pub. we'd basically be f**ked in this town if logans didn't book punk/metal shows. - Mon, 19 Jul 2010 4:58pm

When I started playing in bands at 14, I very quickly saw that the only guy getting payed at the end of the night was the soundman. So I took the very first money I made and went and bought a P.A...

Man, you bring up a tough issue. I sorta agree that the promoter should pay, but the bands have to be cognizant of the number of punters that they'll draw and the value of the exposure versus the costs involved. Did they have any merchandise to sell? Even giving away a couple of CDs to the right people can have a huge value.

If you start tossing responsibility for costs, who would be responsible in this case? The promoter, or perhaps Crown the Wolf, whose untimely demise undoubtably hurt the bottom line? Ugghhh.... sounds like record label shit.

I can't count the number of times I've come away from an out of towner far broker than I left (hear that Cambie?), but ultimately you take your chances.

So you are saying that bands in Vancouver get paid before the bar does and out-of--town bands get their expenses covered before everyone else?

Because that is what it sounds like and I am fairly sure that there are maybe 3 or 4 bars in the world that might do that and they aren't anywhere around this province or country or continent. - Wed, 21 Jul 2010 5:46pm

whenever I have played a show anywhere in town the priority has been to cover the out of town's bands expenses. thats the way it works when I go to Vancouver as well.

As far as covering the bar's expenses i'm not quite sure what you mean.. they make money all night long on beer and food sales. I know I spent 3x what I paid at the door on beer that night.

if they charge money up front for door/sound guy obviously that comes out of the pot first as a service for all the bands. 200 bucks may be cheap compared to renting a hall and PA but this is completely different. The bar promoted the show not because they love the bands, but because they can make money off of beer/food when the show is happening.

obviously we can't expect a bar to actually care about the fact that ALL the bands are paying out of pocket to perform as they only care about covering their expenses.. even when they promote the show... so I would say this thread is dead. - Thu, 22 Jul 2010 10:14am
