Hey My good friend Michael is opening a guitar store tomorrow, FRi June 4th at 2040 Douglas. He is awesome...I have probably bought and sold 200 + guitars with this guy. Every serious Vintage guitar I ever owned pretty much came through him.
I cannot recommend him enough.
cheers - Thu, 3 Jun 2004 10:36am

I drove by there tonight to scope it out and I saw some violins, so it looks like it might carry a variety of stuff.

No, I still have the Pignose and the Bandmaster (both still for sale!). The YCV80 was great! It WILL be mine soon. I'll throw some V30s in it ;) Did you find out how much they'd sell the YCV40WR for?

Well this thread has taken a bit of a turn, but at least it keeps it at the top! I'm going to check out the new store tomorrow. Anybody been in yet? - Fri, 4 Jun 2004 4:17pm

I went into the store "Classic Guitars" the other day, it's pretty awsome. Not that big but quite a few Vintage guitars and amps. They have a ton of old acoustics , and some amps such as a bassman, super reverb, showman and some other stuff. ALL in all a really cool store. - Colin - Sun, 6 Jun 2004 11:20am

is 60's gibson stuff good? i know pre-cbs fender stuff (before 1966/67) is wicked, but i don't know if vintage gibson stuff after the 50's is good. - Mon, 7 Jun 2004 2:52pm

I checked out that place on Saturday, not bad cept the only stuff I was even remotely interested in was the Fender stuff, I think there's a really good deal on a 72 Stratocaster. But the amp stuff looked really used, does there amp stuff have newer tubes in/does it still work really well? - Mon, 7 Jun 2004 3:57pm

that bassman in the corner looks like it has new electroharmonix tubes in it.
i thought the super reverbs looked like they were in very decent condition. he seems like a nice guy, just ask him to plug it in for a bit. - Tue, 8 Jun 2004 12:14pm

Never got to meet the owner, but I truly wonder if anyone's planning on buying anything especially with his prices, I'm sure there justified, it's just that people can't afford a lot (err... most people). But yeah, good investment buying a classic guitar, pity the local market is soft though. - Wed, 9 Jun 2004 9:05pm

on the contrary, i think the prices are totally reasonable in comparison to what he has in the store. those martin acoustics sound absolutely worth the $3000-6000 they are listed for. and the other stuff is very reasonable.. especially the Burns guitars.
He won't compete with Long and McQuade or Guitar Plus in the newer guitar department/etc. but in vintage gear for people looking for it;
he might have a chance.

again, he seems like a nice guy. - Thu, 10 Jun 2004 11:00am

Most people who buy guitars like that are doctors and lawyers and university profs. Certainly not pepole who play in rock bands. I guarentee you will never see any of those guitars played on stage in this town.. On the bright side, I've heard that if you buy a vintage guitar there is a way of declaring you bought it as an investment and claiming it as an RRSP so you can use the cost of it as an income tax deduction. - Fri, 11 Jun 2004 4:10pm

Hmmm...interesting. Although I do see one thing right with that quote. People who play these guitars also play - now bear with me here people - different types of music other than rock. One example is, oh, I don't know...jazz? I know there are other genres, but they seem to have slipped my mind.
Vintage gear is sweet, there is certainly a demand for it, and it's obviously not just the elite who are buying it. Heck, even I own a vintage instrument, and I don't work in any of the above professions, although I can't wait until I do because then I'll buy TONS of 'em! I am curious to see if this store will make it though, because the vintage store in Fernwood is no longer... - Fri, 11 Jun 2004 6:15pm

Musta been Bill Johnson's place. Classic guitar has even better vintage instruments and the store is a little bit more up scale. They will probably do well because serious collectors will know about the place soon, if they don't already. - Fri, 11 Jun 2004 8:13pm

I miss Victoria Vintage Guitar. I got a smokin deal on a set of EMG's for my strat there. Bill was the first one to admit though, he was a player not a buisinessman. He hated the idea of becoming a money hungry weasel(like another store owner in this town who shall remain nameless). - Sat, 12 Jun 2004 12:00am

First of all. I am no doctor, nor am i a Lawyer, and University Prof? nadda, but i do play in rock bands and i dont find the prices unreasonable what so ever. I am Mr. Blue Collar!

As for the RRSP income tax deduction theory, you couldnt be mistaken any further. You cannot approach a bank and say.."Hey, i have this very old guitar, that IF i sell i could make alot of money. I am doing up this years taxes and want to claim that I invested 3,000$ into an RRSP. Could you possibly give me a RRSP Contribution's form saying i invested 3,000$ into an RRSP. Great thanks. I will call you when i sell the Guitar, awesome...oh of course i wont play it."

I went in there the other day. They did have some cool instruments (like that Gibson Harp-6string). But looking at old guitars that cost a fortune just doesn't do it for me. I guess I am not savy in the "vintage" market. I could never justify spending $14,000 on a guitar that didn't come with a car or a beautiful blond girl to hold it! Peace - Mon, 14 Jun 2004 9:06am

$14000??
i think their pre-war martins are the most expensive in there.. and they aren't anywhere near $14000. i guess if your not into vintage instruments and amps.. they do have more "modern" instruments:

http://classicguitars.com/salesinventory072800.html

check the PRS santana. there's some new acoustics as well.(along with a '57 strat they sold online.. now THAT'S hard to justify!)
i wish them the best. - Mon, 14 Jun 2004 11:15am

PRS Santana's are disgusting. The neck is so fat I can't imaging anyone other than Santana himself actually enjoying playing one. - Mon, 14 Jun 2004 1:50pm

Hmm, maybe it was only 1400 then. It was a guitar manufacturer that I have never heard of and it didn't look all that spectacular. Could have been those Morgans. I just saw 14 and a couple of zeros. They did have the Genz Benz El daiblo 2X12. That looked pretty cool but there wasn't a price on it. l8r - Tue, 15 Jun 2004 8:27am
