Ive noticed something.. i love hardcore.. but why are all the bands on Vancouver Island Straightedge? (im sure there are a few that arent, but 90%) I mean, id love to mosh at some shows.. or at least rock out with out getting smacked in the face by some kid swashbuckling, or doing the ski dance, or doing lil ninja kicks. Can anyone explain this to me? - Wed, 26 May 2004 3:25pm

Actually NONE of the hardcore bands on Vancouver Island are Straightedge , Most do have straightedge memebers though. I think Cut Throat Dynasty is the only straightedge band I know of in town , but their not really a hardcore band. War By Other Means is almost a Straightedge band , with only one non-edge member and no straightedge lyrics as of yet. And as for the the ski-dance and ninja kicks ; it's called hardcore dancing , it's how we mosh to hardcore , like skanking is to ska.
Jon BTJ : are you in the band Better Than Jesus ?? I am looking forward to checking you guys out on Friday , I be ready to ski-dance , hope you have lots of breakdowns !!! - Wed, 26 May 2004 4:30pm

TOUGH AS NAILS - 2/5th sxe. no edge lyrics
WAR BY OTHER MEANS - 1/5th sxe, no edge lyrics
CLOAK - 0/6th sxe
SELF INFLICTED - 0/5 sxe (i'm assuming..)
AK47 - tony g. never drinks, but he's too cool to be SXE.

and as for hardcore dancing, you'll notice before the good parts we push everyone out of the way. that's so we don't hit anyone. - Thu, 27 May 2004 4:43am

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN METALCORE AND METAL:

i'm assuming you know what METAL is, so i wont explain that. think meatlocker 7.

METALCORE is HARDCORE that is heavily influenced by metal. the song writing is a mix of both genres, but can vary from very hardcore stuff with little metal riffs to mostly metal but with breakdowns and lots of E chord chugga chugga.

if you have a MP3 downloading program check out CALIBAN, the first POISON THE WELL record, or BLEEDING THROUGH. these are all very metally HC bands.

HIMSA and DARKEST HOUR are more on the metal side, but still very obviously HC influenced. - Thu, 27 May 2004 4:49am

Despite me liking Darkest Hour and most metalcore in general, alot of it rips off At The Gates like it's no tomorrow.

Even though everyone think's a i'm a metal purist, I allow the occasional hardcore cd come into my possession...the greatest hardcore band i've heard in awhile is Lickgoldensky...f'n awesome record. Ooh and if you consider Ed Gein hardcore, their cd is grrreat too. - Thu, 27 May 2004 5:04am

SXE Ninja kicks and such fucking rock. People don't freak out enough at shows and it's lot cooler to dance it up than it is to take part in the jocko homo tackle mosh that most pits turn into. Both have their plusses of course (I'm not dissing moshing) but it's a lot more fun to watch caffeine hyped straight edge kids doing backflips than a drunken Jak fall on their ass repeatedly. Plus Ninja kickers tend to leave room for others to dance. Drunken frat boy moshers stick like shit to your shoe if you try to dance. The mosh kept following me around in fact at the last gig I felt like moving around at. The SXE Ninjas would have let me be.

=)

boys are wearing girl pants and and early eighties foam trucker hats, when did this become cool? And how come its lame to get all fucked up and fall over( Iam not saying this is the thing to do)? Does this offend straight edge kids? It sounds like the goerge bush youth core.(in stern voice)Sir in 5 to 10 years if we can keep them off the drugs, into wearing the same clothes and

QUESTION AND ANSWER PERIOD
A - s= straight e= edge. the x is there because X is the straight edge symbol. people who went to bar/all ages combo shows used to get x's drawn on their hands if they were underage so they couldnt buy booze. then people who DIDNT WANT booze started doing it to make a point.

Q - why is "ninja dancing" cool
A - it's fun. moshing around punk style is fun too, but if you're listening to a band that has breakdowns, it's kind of hard to dance like that. Ninja Dancing, also known as Moshing, Throwing Down, or Hardcore Dancing was made up to go along with the super slow parts of hardcore songs.

Q - how come boys are wearing girl pants and and early eighties foam trucker hats, when did this become cool?
A - it's been cool for a couple of years. Trucker hats are now going OUT of style because they're so mainstream, and you know us counterculture people, we hate the idea of someone thinking we're mainstream.

Boys are wearing girls pants because they want tight, low rise pants and no one makes those for boys. boys pants are always baggier, even the "slim fit" ones.

Q - And how come its lame to get all fucked up and fall over( Iam not saying this is the thing to do)?
A - falling over is lame? awe c'mon. falling over! it's so great! you get to look stupid AND maybe hurt yourself.

Q - Does this offend straight edge kids?
A - Mostly if offends people who want to put on shows. If you put on an all ages show and the venue finds beer bottles and cigarette butts and kids drinking out front, then they'll get in trouble, so they don't let you put on all ages shows there anymore. Obviously some shows it's different. Some shows are put on my drunk punks and they want everyone to get tanked and they dont care. Other shows (Like all the James Bay Community Center shows) dont want anyone drinking or smoking. They realize that people are still going to, so they let you do it around the back so no one gets in trouble, but kids still smoke out front.

"Sir in 5 to 10 years if we can keep them off the drugs, into wearing the same clothes and doing ninja kicks we can have them ready to invade Iran!"

There are some SXE people who want everyone to not drink. I dont know any of them. all the edge people i know in Victoria are Straight Edge for themselves. They'd rather if no one got thier venue shut down, but other than that they dont give a shit what you do.

None of the people i know that wear girls pants want everyone else to wear them too. Same goes for the Ninja Dancers. if you want to dance with us, please do. have fun. if you dont want to, we're not going to be bummed. no one's forcing any sort of Hardcore dresscode. last show i went to there were just as many metal skids as there were hardcore fags. same goes for punk rockers.

why everyone gotta hate?

Ahoy.. wow.. i hit a vein here... aight.. i suppose i was just confused by the Xs thats pretty much surround a lot of Van Isle hardcore... xVxIxHxCx par example.... makes it seem pretty straightedge... and yea.. theres nothing much wrong with ninja dancing.. but getting messy and falling over is just a classic thing to do! And yea, you may hurt yourself, but you wont feel it til the next day, and youll be hurting then anyways..

and as for Better Than Jesus.. its pretty hard to define, blackdeathmelodicmetalcore? hmm we dont really try to stick to any genre.. we just cutt butts.. but yea.. were hoping itll be more mosh than swashbuckle..(as in waving a sabre.. hardcore dancing stylee..) on friday.. check it out, hopefully youll like it.. - Thu, 27 May 2004 12:05pm

As far as not drinking goes that's totally cool by me, a lot of my friends choose not to drink and that's perfectly fine and actually a rather responsible thing to do. But why do you SXE kids feel that you need to run around with X's on your hands and flaunt it. It's almost as if you're trying to say "Look at me, I dont drink. I'm better than you guys. Na na na na na naaah!" It's not like people who DO drink run around with "Beer please" across their foreheads. - Thu, 27 May 2004 2:17pm

I'm not a fan of straight-edge in the formal "scene" sense - Ian Mackaye always struck me as a creepy bastard in old Minor Threat footage, totally cultish, not much of a surprise that Krisna crept into that scene, etc. But flaunting it because they put Xs on their hands? How's that any different than flaunting drunk punk by getting a mohawk or shit, holding up your beer?

Everyone's got their symbols (or steals someone else's). - Thu, 27 May 2004 2:52pm

Have you ever seen an ad for beer? A commercial maybe? Gone to an event with a beer garden? Maybe been to, say, a Canada Day celebration that was sponsored by Molson?

Every day we are bombarded with images and slogans praising the consumption of alchohol and cigarettes. Every time I go for a walk I see something related to the buying, selling, or consumption of these products.

It never stops.

So you'll have to excuse me if I don't exactly feel bad that two nights out of a month you have to see a couple kids with x's on their hands.

And as for flaunting it? Couldn't it be possible that they are just wearing it, and perhaps the "flaunting" is something your mind is concocting?

I mean, I've been wearing x's for a long time now, and I've never once flaunted it. Not once. But am I proud of it? You bet. It took me a long time to get where I am today, and it certainly wouldn't have happened for me if I had kept doing the drink thing.

I'm not straight-edge to be a part of my own little society, I'm straight-edge because I don't want to be a part of yours. ;) - Fri, 28 May 2004 2:15am

So what if some people kick the air and others mosh.. Back in the 80's they'd flick their lighters to a ballad and bang their fists in the air, and guys wore girls pants. Times change, styles change, I say deal with it or go hang out at the Boom Boom Room.

And Ive seen enough shows in town where there wouldnt have been any action in front of the band if not for a few of the hxc crowd gettin things going.. - Fri, 28 May 2004 9:44am

Word, GKdc.....

I've never worn Xs (ok, once for fun), but I've never done any recreational drugs (I include alcohol and nicotine in that) except for the occasional bit of caffeine... I never had any exposure to the straight-edge movement in those formative years as an impressionable teenager, so i've never felt any connection to it.... But I certainly support people being stubborn enough to live their lives the way they want to without evangelizing...... - Fri, 28 May 2004 3:45pm

Not a single straightedge reference. The "X" in the middle of the "VIHC" logo is just classic hardcore. Like the old school "NYHC" symbol. That's all.

Why do we have to fight anything , whay can't we just like we like and respect that other people like something else ?
