Tuesday April 13

-Don't need you: The herstory of Riot Grrrl (40mins)

Dont Need You is a documentary film that tells the story of the origins of the Riot Grrrl movement in the American independent music scene of the 1990s, and how this feminist movement evolved into a revolutionary underground network of education and self-awareness network through music, writing, activism, and women-friendly community. It features interviews interspersed with rare, archival materials, including original Riot Grrrl fanzines, flyers, and photographs, as well as seldom seen footage from pioneering Riot Grrrl bands like Bikini Kill, Heavens to Betsy, and Bratmobile, as well as compelling interview footage with Ian MacKaye and clips of Fugazi in concert.

-Rise Above: The Tribe 8 Documentary (80mins)

An exhilarating profile of the legendary dyke punk rock band, TRIBE 8. Through filmed performances and intense personal stories of addiction and loss, RISE ABOVE captures the beauty and resilience that lies just beneath the rough exterior of a controversial and gender-bending punk rock band. This entertaining flick chronicles hilarious live performances, candid moments of their lives at work and on the road, and the controversy at The Michigan Womyn's Music Festival, an all women's music festival, that landed them in a quagmire of protest and praise from a fiercely divided crowd. It also captures the truly funny and warm people behind the music and the politics!

Thursday April 15

-The Punk Years (google video 24mins)

Part 5 of a 10 part documetary. 'The Punk Years' is also good in tracing the pre-punk music history, Another strength is that the punk scene is covered in a sub-cultural sense, which is placed in the context of mainstream culture, but also goes further than just music. Fashion, values, 'Zines' the DIY ethic, and so forth, are all explored.

-The day the Country Died: A History of Anarcho Punk 1980-1984. (90mins)

The story of the anarcho-punk movement is told by some of the most influential performers including; Penny Rimbaud (Crass) Colin Jerwood (Conflict) Colin & Kevin (Flux of Pink Indians) Dick Lucas (Subhumans) Zillah Minx (Rubella Ballet) Gary Buckley (Dirt) Steve Lake (Zounds) Mark Wallis (Liberty) Gee Vaucher (Crass) Dave Hyndman (Hit Parade) Rob Millar (Amebix) Rodney Relax (Alternative) Stringy & Snout (Erratics) and Gerard Evans (Flowers in the Dustbin). The interview footage is laced with both audio and visual music performance from the main performers on the scene including Crass Conflict, Subhumans ,Liberty, Toxic Waste, Chumbawamba ,Sacrilege & many more

Friday April 16

-Queercore: A Punk-U-mentary

QUEERCORE (a punk-u-mentary) is a brilliant account of the thriving homopunk scene; a documentary on gay & lesbian iconoclasts and renegades, the marriage of punk philosophy with activism. Positive agression, action, sound, and image.

-Interview with Martin Sorrondeguy from Limp Wrist & Los Criudos (4:48)

Martin Sorrondeguy is the singer of hardcore bands Los Crudos and Limp Wrist, the founder of the DIY record label, Lengua Armada Discos, documentary film director and a prominent figure in both the straight edge scene and the queercore scene.

-Global Tribe Anarchist punk collective in Mexico (youtube 2.52mins)

This is Anarchism in its essence people rising themselves to deal with communal issues and not waiting on a crorupt government to get its act together.

-Beyond the Screams: Latino Punk Culture(youtube or google. 27mins)

Beyond the Screams is a half-hour video documentary about Chicano/Latino participation in U.S. punk and hardcore, a statement which hardly begins to encapsulate the project begun here. Bracketed by the early East L.A. punk scene (featuring too-short interviews with Alice Armendariz from The Bags and Teresa Covarrubias from The Brat) and '90s U.S. hardcore, Martin Sorrondeguy traces the historical trajectory of Chicano/Latino punk rock and more, its always-emergent body politic, with brilliant skill.

Sunday April 18

-Oi Polloi Global Dissent ( 38 Min.)

Oi Polloi are an anarcho-punk band from Scotland that formed around 1981.
The Oi Polloi Tour Documentary, following the band and the D.I.Y., anarchist, squatting, punk & anti-fascist scenes from 1994 "Global Dissent: Anarchist Music & Action" by Brian Tipa

-Useless:A documentary about Gerry Hannah of the Subhumans

In 2004 Vancouver filmmaker Glen Sanford made a documentary movie about Gerry Hannah,

Gerry Hannah (also known as Gerry Useless) was a member of the militant environmental group Direct Action also known as the Squamish Five and the (Vancouver Five).
Squamish Five carried out a political campaign of "direct actions", including the bombing of Litton Industries which produced guidance systems for American nuclear cruise missiles. Hannah was convicted of conspiracy to rob an armoured car and possession of a stolen weapon, for which he received a ten year jail sentence. He was released after serving five years of his sentence. Hannah was also a member of the Vancouver punk band, the Subhumans, from 1978 to 1981. Gerry penned at least two classics of the genre, "Slave To My Dick" and "Fuck You".

-Crass: There is no authority but yourself

The anarchist punk band Crass was very different from their contemporaries. The Sex Pistols and The Clash sold their souls to big record labels, whereas Crass stayed true to their anti-corporate ideals. Crass still exists today as a commune just outside of London named 'Dial House'- a safe haven for those individuals of principle who still live by the old punk slogan 'Do it yourself'. - Thu, 1 Apr 2010 3:15pm
