We need a new kick ass venue that's ground level (not in a basement, not on the 2nd floor). Where was Vertigo? Was that at UVIC? - Sat, 15 May 2004 5:25am

Yes. Vertigo was the big club at UVic.

Hmmm, there has been tons of good venues in this city over the years. I'd say the Limit probably had one of the better stages just cause you could see everything going on, and the sound system was great there too. Vertigo rocked but it was too far away from town. Legends sucks ass the sound is brutal and you cant see anything. Steamers is o.k. but the stage is too small. Lucky is good from the bands point of view but the room is kinda small and the congestion in front of the bar on a busy night can get a little frustrating. Granted with the right girlie behind the bar sometimes being stuck there is o.k, and they treat the bands really well. Logans is good, the sound system is getting better, the stage is bigger now and they treat the bands like gold there. Harpos was a great room to go see bands in the setup was great, no matter where you were you could see the stage, and with Markus booking shows you were guaranteed to see tons of amazing acts. Soundgarden had a good setup and a great sound system as well. Diablos was a neat little room to play, too bad it didnt fly I think it could of ended up being a pretty cool little place. Upstairs at the red lion, I saw a few shows there that was a pretty sweet room, they had a huge capacity there too. Wastelands, played a few there it was great, and before that it was 94th street, played there as well it was a blast, and then it became Sugar and it's still a great room to see a band. Upstairs at the F.O.E. hall saw tons of shows there and it was one of the only bars us underage punks could go drink in. It's the Red door now, not really my style anymore. Hmmm theres lots more I'm just drawing a blank now. - Sat, 15 May 2004 7:06am

My fave is Logan's (can't beat the intimacy) followed by Lucky Bar (good stage and great sound).... Course Harpo's was hands down the all time greatest.... :-( - Sat, 15 May 2004 11:06am

I really like the Central; Steamer's is pretty good too. I find Lucky has a very restrictive layout. The old Harpo's WAS great. I agree with those that dislike Legends. Not enjoyable to play the stage and worse when you're there to see an artist. Haven't played Logans since they've changed it. Vertigo was good if it was busy, but if you were onstage, even with a 100 people it felt like the place was empty. I personally really like the Queen's in Nanaimo; great staff and a superior room. - Sat, 15 May 2004 12:35pm

hmm..most of the responses have been centred around the bars in this town. personally i think the warehouse space on hillside in the industrial area has the ideal layout...a long hallway to get into it...a lighted back room where you could talk with people, an open air hallway out back where people could smoke but not be visible from the street..and kids could drink etc. if they wanted to...although im somewhat biased..i like the setup at the burnside house as well..and any show i've been to there has been great..shows are typically by donation, and no one is turned away if they can't legitimately pay to get in, no hasles from the cops either (so far)...As far as bars go....Central B&G has great sound and sightlines and a big dance floor area.. - Sat, 15 May 2004 8:01pm

The Central is fun, they've got an interesting layout and the sound system struck me as being pretty decent. Sugar is also good because it's got one of the larger capacities in the city. Soundgarden was cool as well, it's a shame it didn't stick around longer. I'll have to agree with the masses and state my dislike for Legends; you pretty much have to be front row to get a decent view of whoever's playing, and the low ceiling always makes it feel overly cramped. Not really my style, to say the least. - Sun, 16 May 2004 3:58am

The all time best venue ever in Victoria was for sure Harpo's...the layout was great-you could see the stage from anywhere in the bar, and the stage was roomy and right in the centre. The sound system and lighting was great, the sound guys were generally very competent, and there were always lots of folk there on any given night. Saw many, many great bands there, and had a lot of good gigs. And that tiny little band room was way cool.
Carrying gear up those stairs sure sucked though... - Sun, 16 May 2004 8:36am

Memorial Arena. GREAT sound. Great bands (Stryper, Corey Hart's "Boy in the Box" tour, Triumph, Frozen Ghost, April Wine, Glass Tiger). Excellent shit-causing hot dogs at the concession, giddy 14 year-old girls, that foamy insulation shit. - Sun, 16 May 2004 1:02pm

was there a club called The Icehouse or something? What was it like?

The 50/50 Arts Collective apparently leased a space, and I think they said something about doing some shows there? Could be neat... - Sun, 16 May 2004 1:55pm

Vertigo was the best(it'd be nice if some new entity were to start up again).
Harpo's/Upstair's probably the best active club.
Lucky and Logan's have +'s & -'s but are fun to play.
I miss The Rail, O.A.P. hall and the F.O.E.
The Curling Rink would be a great spot to have a Metal/Shredfest.
So would Centennial square or the Cameron bandshell if you could get past the anal retentive citizen's and city council types who would oppose such an event. Could you imagine metal in the Park. - Sun, 16 May 2004 2:31pm

The One After Two - last I heard the 50/50 was still in the process of relocating (they found a place somewhere on Douglas, I think) from their old Craigflower location. Yes, they did have shows there and once they're settled in at the new location I'm sure there will be many more. I can't believe someone said Memorial arena. Logan's sucks. It's the worst place in Vic. My favorite place to play is The Lucky Bar, but my favorite place to see a band is Steamers. But if you think about it, Victoria sucks. I could care less if I ever play here again. Nobody here cares. - Mon, 17 May 2004 2:44pm

From what I've heard Sugar is set to become more of a stage bar and will put the other venues to shame, I just hope they change the name to something else if that's the case..
And for the guy above, Icehouse strip bar is what is now sopranos, and yeah it was a pretty good venue. - Mon, 17 May 2004 2:59pm

The Soundgarden was definitely rad - good sitelines, good sound, ample room to set up gear, treated us very well. Lucky is rad to, everything metioned above holds true except the trek from the set-up room to stage can be tricky with a big crowd and a big kit.
Logans, rad. Lots of stageroom, ample sound for the most part, treated like gold. Beer tickets!
The Upstairs Lounge would probably be my favourite place that we've played simply because of the fact that it's big, and metal bands (if mixed properly by soundguy) sound fucking huge in there.
And then there's the Cambie...Ahhhh our one and only experience there featured about 25 spectators, crackheads throwing fries at us, the bartender spazzing and almost beating up Dave, the bouncer telling us that if we decided to kick the bartender's ass that he wouldn't care, because we played a Slayer cover in our set. "Show No Mercy tour dude, 1985 I was there!!" ahhah, right '85... - Mon, 17 May 2004 3:26pm

some of these answers are fucking nuts. not that they're bad venues, but they're not great.

VERTIGO? yeah, it was a pretty decent place, but who the fuck wants to go all the way to UVic for a show? how the hell are you supposed to get home?

THURSDAYS is shitty as hell if you actually want to see the band, that crazy standup bar thing cuts the up. and now that they enforce the fire code, well, good luck trying to see a popular band there unless you're in line before 7PM.

LUCKY BAR is like a traffic jam. the only shows i've really enjoyed there were the ones where the turnout wasnt huge. the EXHUMED show was good.

SUGAR is a sweeeeet venue for shows but i havent seen a show there once that wasnt $15 or more. it's an expensive place to rent and it's too big for filling up with a small band.
.....

i always liked SOUNDGARDEN, but i can't say i ever saw a band i really liked there.

the BURNSIDE house gets my vote for being the best fucking basement i've ever seen a show in. it's like it's not even a basement. high ceilings, good sound, room for tons of people, and they don't worry about going too late and disturbing the neighbours. - Tue, 18 May 2004 5:50am

Hmmm... as much as I hate to say it, Upstairs Lounge has to be the best size wise (nice big stage), then you have Logan's, Lucky, Steamers, and any of the many jam spaces/all agers I've been too. I keep saying this, but if I had the $$$ I'd take the old Ward's Music building on Quadra and turn it into a venue, it's been sitting there gathering dust for years now. Worse venue: Legends, once it packs it's hard to get a really decent view of the stage, and I don't like the overall vibe with the place. Most misused venue has to be that bar right above Rising Star Bakery, they turned it into a club, but they should get more live bands there!!! I wonder if that huge stage is still there. Nuff babbling... - Tue, 18 May 2004 6:26am

How about when you live 5 minutes from UVic? I find it a pain in the ass to go all the way downtown for a show. - Fri, 21 May 2004 4:56am
