Who do you think are the most versatile drummers of all time.

People always mention drummers like: Jimmy Chamberlain, Dave Grohl, Vinnie Paul, Noel Redding, John Bonham, Stephen Perkins, Matt Cameron, Dave Lambardo, David Lovering, Neil Peart, The Pearl Jam Drummers....and a long list of other well known skin smackers.

What do you folks think? - Tue, 11 May 2004 5:53pm

Vinnie Coliuta would be the most versitile drummer to come to mind.

He played with Frank Zappa back in the day, did his stint with Sting's band and is now on the new Megadeth album. Not to mention all the other stuff he's done over the years.

All of FZ's drummers had to be pretty versatile eh? Jesus, the things he would make them do, in all possible genres (oft-times within the same composition). It was the Frank Zappa consideration which stopped me from being able to reply to this discussion initially.

For pure funkiness (implied versatility), my vote goes to Zigaboo Modeliste (The Meters). - Tue, 11 May 2004 7:44pm

Speaking of David Grohl. I managed to muster up enough curage to listen to "Queens of the stone age". The album with Davey boy on drums. Yup, my memory served me correct. That album fucking chews. The WORST album, hands down i have ever purchased ( i dont download music ). Fuck, it sucked, who else is with me?

Listen to Davey boys drums on that album..it is "Weak at best"

AND......

NEW MEGADETH ALBUM?????? WTF! No one advertises? - Wed, 12 May 2004 12:01pm

A no-brainer. My vote goes to Bill Bruford who can play anything from hard rock to real honest to God jazz with all the technique you could ever want and impeccable taste. - Wed, 12 May 2004 12:23pm

My favourites are Travis Barker, Lars Ulrich, and Phil Collins. Collins especially, because last time I was in Britain I saw him play at the Royal Garden Concert. For four hours he played with people like Paul McArtney, Ozzy, and some Spice Girl. Real talent! Plus he's a leftie. - Wed, 12 May 2004 2:07pm

I like the Wright brother that isn't Mr. Wrong. Withtin a single at a NoMeansNo set you can hear immense versitilaty and he plays jazz style! And to the guy upstairs..... I personally think that Songs for the Deaf is one of the better albums I've purchased ever and I'd say Dave Grohl is deffinately one of the most versatile drummers. I'd like to see you do some of those fills! If you're still not convinced pick up a copy of Probot. It's a metal album that Dave played all the instruments. - Thu, 13 May 2004 10:06am
