Sun. February 7th 2010 7PM - 1AM doors at 630PM - R.I.P. Geoff Lloyd, of The Slickjacks [-] East Vamps, Death Sentence, Aging Youth Gang, Mr. Plow, The Deadcats, The Strugglers, Free Cigarettes for Drunk Minors, Melody Mangler 10 BUX DONATIONS GRATEFULLY ACCEPTED...SLIDING SCALE OF COURSE

I wrote this after the show but never got around to posting it. I thought someone there would review it, but I haven’t seen anything so far. Here goes:

What a wicked night! Thrown together at a moment's notice to support a good friend going through bad times. You just couldn't get all these bands on the same bill otherwise, so it was big. A lot of cool people came out to the point where I just felt dwarfed by all the great musicians and personalities in the room.

I got there early so I could see FCfDM. A perfect start to the night, because its how a lot of us felt right then... warm and safe, but melancholy. Humming their songs pretty strong for a while after.

Strugglers were explosive – that’s when it started kicking in how many of these players I knew and the evening became a blur. Definitely an explosion of energy. Deadcats are sounding good these days, and seem pretty stoked on big things going on for them. Mr Plow... tsk tsk... I felt less horror and shame than I normally do, and we didn't even have time to heckle!
I always come away BLOWN away by AYG these last couple years - damn they're just so good. Nick Venditti joined a few years ago and his best talents have complimented the others so well - its a great fit. Perfect balance in that band, just so proud to have 'em, still! Definitely another of the great Vancouver punk bands.

Cadaver Dogs... nothing but coool.. nothing like seasoned cowboys in their prime! OW, was that ever a treat - awesome players, and really nicely done.. a lotta care and a lotta depth. http://www.cadaverdogs.ca/songs.htm
yum.

So it was clearly a punk show, and so far it had a lot of the more polite elements of a punk show.. then it started getting amped up and crazy. Walking through the crowd before DS got on, everyone I went by started telling me stories about what the bandmembers had just been up
to, and scaring me! I know a couple of them so it’s that uncomfortable feeling like you're gonna see someone you love go splat. AND I'D HATE THAT! Before they got on we were saying it’s either gonna be spectacular or a trainwreck, gross. Plus they weren't so hot last time, and people who'd never see them before got the wrong impression.
But THIS TIME!!! I can't even express... that was DEATH SENTENCE! I just love that its all those guys in the band too - they can all play! I was all sad that Scum left town, but this was as cool, maybe moreso... you know, he's got that extra few lbs of metal on him, haha. Now its Sid & Doug still and Bryan & Goonie.. who could all have modelled for the posters. So relieved to see a great set from them.

Then they proceeded to overstay their welcome and not get the fk off the stage like they were told to, so drunk Wendy got up there yelling over them giving away the rest of the prize donations, then Melody Mangler did her thing all over the middle of the floor. er.. not wendy’s thing all over the floor.. i meant melody's which is a lot less messy. HAHAHAAA
East Vamps were really good and more serious than I'd expected, and Ligaya was back on bass for the start (she's been really solid), and Lisa finished the set. I didn't even know who or what that band was about til that night! Nicely done.

As an aside, that 300lb chimp in the pit can bite me, what an asshole, YOU don't keep moshing over & over into 110lb women who're NOT near any semblence of a pit and not getting into it.
And your friends who scraped you up off the floor so you could drink more and then left you unsupervised again can bite me too. WHAT AN OBNOXIOUS PRICK! Stay home.

Bite me.. i love it, is that from the 60’s? Anyway, as 2010 was coming around with all the O crap starting up here, and in particular right about the time that eastfk cross went up I got really agitated, really just frustrated and angry that we didn't seem to have a lot of old-school punks keeping it up in this city. I guess they're around.. not nearly as angry anymore, but they’ve all more than put in their time and they’re all going strong.
so someone take down that cross.

*If you don't know Lisa but decide that you can spare a little, I guarantee that the day you meet her you'll feel good for being a part of helping that girl get back on her feet. - Thu, 25 Feb 2010 5:17pm Edited: Thu, 25 Feb 2010 5:47pm
