Devastating is the only word I find fitting to describe the sounds that were made on that night at that place. I had heard two songs from the Class of '84 on myspace only hours prior to the show, and I had expected them to be good, but the 128 bit noise emitted from my guitarist's shitty laptop speaker were not even nearly enough to prepare me for the REAL THING.

Speaking as the bass player for the headlining band, the Role Models, I can honestly say that the Class of '84 had no business going on before us. The tables should have been turned; the superior band is generally supposed to go last, and had it not been for the steadfast alleviance of any pain from all the booze I had consumed before we went on ("try to stay somewhat sober for the show this time, Virgil." "Whatever.") The intimidation I would have felt might have been too much for me.

I had been told that the bassist for the Class was new to the sound, and had only jammed with the band thrice before, but you never would have known it for listening. The confidence the band exuded onstage was enough to bowl over even the most cynical listener, and the sound that resulted could only have been made by well seasoned vets. My only complaint would be that the set was a little short. I'm sure the problem will be only temporary, however.

The opening band was something entirely different. The New Crime is a collaboration of two men, one armed with guitar and microphone and the other at the helm of the switchboard. It takes balls to put yourself out on stage like this. When you play in a band, each individual member is only one part of something much larger. This has it's benefits, of course; strength in numbers being key. Also, it's much easier to spread out the blame a bit when there are so many sets of hands at work. When you're out there pretty much on your own, though, it's a very different story, but these guys pulled it off well, and the combination of live music against a backdrop of canned was deadly enough to get the floor moving with people, all arms and legs flailing, drinks spilling, fun being had.

All in all, it was a good time. It's refreshing to see a good show being performed someplace other than one of the local taverns, from time to time, and I wish there could be a lot more of these types of doings transpiring in our sleepy little city.

Oh, and the Role Models? We sucked as usual, but as usual nobody seemed to notice and/or care. So what the fuck? May as well keep playing... - Mon, 15 Feb 2010 5:16pm Edited: Mon, 15 Feb 2010 5:17pm

HA! Great review Virg I'm not sure I could have said it any better myself. Great mix of people at the show. The crowd was rowdy and ready for it and the bands played great. I especially enjoyed hearing Class of 1984 these guys are worth checking out, good songs and great stage presence. I only heard some of The New Krime, different but I liked what I heard. And well yeah as for us I'm not gonna comment on my own band but the crowd seemed to be gettin it hahaha. And thanks a lot to chuck for supporting my mike stand throughout the ENTIRE set, what a guy! Hard to sing into it when people are flying through the air smoking into it! GREAT SHOW!! I also agree that our city needs more of these awesome little shows. - Tue, 16 Feb 2010 10:40am

Yeah...that was a really fun show. Class of 1984 were the best I've ever seen them and The Role Models were miles above what their Myspace songs would have you expecting. Great time...great venue...lotsa beer. I AM the NEW KRIME...and that was thing single worst set I've played as a one-man band (and there's video of this one!)...thanks to Sparkles for standing there trying to control the feedback and shit...didn't matter though, there was no saving that trainweck!

As far as saying that Victoria needs more awesome little shows...have you looked for 'em? I've played houseparties with 3+ two weekends in a row, and I'm playing another this weekend. There is quite a few cool little shows goingon, they just might be off your radar. There can never be enough though. The house that last weekends show was at was perfect...hopefully they'll do many more shows in the near future. - Tue, 16 Feb 2010 2:03pm
