As of today, the list below are resources listed on this site as "Unconfirmed."

As many of the musicians who use http://www.livevictoria.com know, it can be frustrating and tedious to contact or attempt contacting venues and resources without knowing if your Email messages are being received.

It can also be a colossal waste of time and energy - we'd all rather send messages and promo information, etc., to addresses we know are being monitored and will be responded to.

So, if you have any direct contact with the proprietors of any of the resources listed below, please contact them and inform them that they need to update their profiles and begin taking advantage of one of the best FREE local promotional services available.

It may speed up their response if you tell them that not updating their profile makes it look like they don't care.

Maybe you should be more concerned about all the bands you ripped off when you had that "contest" for the compilation cd.

Yes, THAT one, the one where you collected $20 from every band who entered, than asked them for PROFESSIONAL quality photographs (at their expense) from the ones that "won".

Oh right, you never did put out that cd, did you? We all thought you skipped town.

I say that we all watch your profile and everyone that was ripped off by you should show up at your next show.

There's been people looking for you, Vincent. - Sun, 6 Dec 2009 12:35pm

You're missing the point. I don't care about the 20 bucks (well, actually it's not nice to lose 20 bucks, but anyways...) , it's the fact that he ran a contest, charging a $20 "entry fee", and never gave away the "prize".

Someone told me that he had over 600 songs entered.

And it's not the photo, it's HIRING a professional photographer that can cost some real dough. He absolutely insisted that the photos were done professionally...

The long & short of it was he ripped off a lot of people in the music community in Victoria, and a lot of musicians have no money to begin with.

he grabbed everyone's money, then made them spend more. - Sun, 6 Dec 2009 2:41pm

A lot of low-level scams run their course, completely off the radar because everyone says "it's only" $10, $20, $50. Meanwhile some douchbag conman has actually taken thousands from hundreds of innocent or well-meaning, hardworking people. Whatever the amount, it's a piss off to ripped off. - Sun, 20 Dec 2009 2:57pm

It is always good to be certain of all the facts before making accusations.

Inaccurate, incomplete (or potentially libelous) statements can lead to confusion and undeserved hostility.

Personal grievances are best dealt with in person.

In 2003, our CD label, Channel Eau (www.channeleau.com) began soliciting submissions for a multi-artist, triple CD compilation album, intended to showcase the diversity of music from this region.

We spent years trying to make it fly, against considerable odds.

“Music from the Islands of British Columbia” (MIBC) was a project that failed, not a fraud perpetrated upon our fellow musicians.

Perhaps we could have done some things better or differently, but please don’t target me or Channel Eau because we tried to help others but failed.

From the very conception of MIBC we chose to exclude music by any Channel Eau artists (including myself) thereby avoiding any suggestion of favoritism or exploitation.

MIBC It was an opportunity to participate in the promotion of Vancouver Island music (each of the final 60 plus artists whose work would be featured were to receive an equal portion of a 50% share of any profits from sales).

MIBC was to be a 3 CD boxed set with a deluxe, glossy, full colour, 65 page booklet.

Based on an initial run of 10,000 copies, the production budget for MIBC (not including promotion and distribution) was about $65,000.

For a $20 submission fee, artists were invited to submit as many songs as they could fit on one CD.

We did not receive $20 per song, as some people have suggested.

The total number of submissions received consisted of about 800 songs, submitted by less than 100 artists, amounting to just over $1,600.

As clearly stated in our initial solicitation, the submission fee was non-refundable, administrative charge (this was also intended to discourage frivolous and/or redundant duplicate submissions).

We spent several hundred hours processing the submissions, selecting the tracks, designing the cover and booklet and writing the contracts.

Much time was spent communicating with artists about the contracts and yes, the dreaded “send us a photo that doesn’t look like it was taken with a cell phone or webcam,” issue.

Each artist / track featured, was to have a corresponding full page in the booklet.

Since one of the intentions of MIBC was to provide a professional vehicle for promotion of the artists whose music was to be featured, we wanted to include high quality photos to represent them.

We never insisted that professional photographers were required.

The matter of the photos required that as many as 20(!) emails were exchanged with some artists.

Apart from our unpaid time, we also put a few thousand of our own “blue collar dollars” into the project.

At the time we initiated MIBC we also had an independent financial backer.

Unfortunately, a short while after the final selections had been made (due to changes in their personal financial situation, unrelated to MIBC) our financial backer withdrew from the project without contributing any of the promised funds.

Despite months of subsequent searching for replacement financing, we were unable to find an alternate means of funding the project.

We personally lost quite a bit of money on this project, as our actual administrative costs for MIBC well exceeded the less than $1,600 we received in submission fees.

In fact, the demise of MIBC and its attendant demands of money and time contributed significantly to the relative inactivity of http://www.channeleau.com that followed.

It is only recently that we have been in a position to commence the revival of http://www.channeleau.com that is currently under way (expect to see and hear new things from us in 2010).

Suffice it to say that nobody has lost more sleep over, or has been more disappointed by the demise of MIBC than myself and my colleagues.

If any artists who participated in MIBC require further information about the project, please feel free to contact us directly: infeau at channeleau dot com

Sincerely,

"Perhaps we could have done some things better or differently, but please don’t target me or Channel Eau because we tried to help others but failed."

while the idea is good; things/compilations like these died out with rocktoria. Smaller focus to hit a better "target audience"(lol, thank you CV for that one).

You had a budget of $64k? And you still had shortcomings? You did not provide recording nor any other materials aside from jacket and booklet design(of which 60 pages would be devoted to each artist; 1 page per artist... so they provided the material for you to place on a template, less than 2 hrs work for any graphic designer). Of which can be contracted out from that $64K(at less than $5k), for 10,000 copies would run you less than $10k(Im just in the middle of jacket and booklet design for the band Im in) leaving you with... $54k, duplication of the cd with master, less than $.60/copy with 30,000 cd's needing to be duped to match the "3 cd box set" = $18k... What Im getting at is you guys seem to need to sit down and properly assess what it is you want to achieve, instead of promises of grandure met with failure.
As much as its a great idea, sometimes a more focused approach will help.

"Apart from our unpaid time, we also put a few thousand of our own “blue collar dollars” into the project."

what happened to the production budget of $64k?????????

"At the time we initiated MIBC we also had an independent financial backer."

what happened to the production budget of $64k?????????

"Unfortunately, a short while after the final selections had been made (due to changes in their personal financial situation, unrelated to MIBC) our financial backer withdrew from the project without contributing any of the promised funds."

what happened to your project production budget of $64k???? You seemed to have worked that out before financial backing or did you guys put up the money first, in hopes of having the "financial backers" not pull the plug? Basically, they waited to see what your product would be capable of before giving any funds up?

Sure there's 2 sides to every coin; but lets face it, you made an empty promise and its come back to bite you in the arse.

"We personally lost quite a bit of money on this project, as our actual administrative costs for MIBC well exceeded the less than $1,600 we received in submission fees."

But you had a budget that was understood, no? I do not see how you can put together a product without a budget to back you up?

I am sure you all meant well with this project and its shit to hear things like this dont work out; but again, let's be honest... you guys were in over your heads.
1 cd with the best artists(in your minds), easy to make; easy to sell.*(stuff like this would sell in coffee shops for sure, but a 3 disc box set??) - Tue, 22 Dec 2009 6:56am

JDL - you repeatedly asked the question,

"what happened to the production budget of $64k?????????"

You partly answered this yourself when you quoted from my previous post:

"At the time we initiated MIBC we also had an independent financial backer."

As also stated im my previous post:

"Unfortunately, a short while after the final selections had been made (due to changes in their personal financial situation, unrelated to MIBC) our financial backer withdrew from the project without contributing any of the promised funds."

As stated at the end of my previous post:

"If any artists who participated in MIBC require further information about the project, please feel free to contact us directly: infeau at channeleau dot com."
