In the "Greatest Guitar Player" thread Perpetual_Burn said:
"Being a wicked guitar player and being a wicked songwriter are 2 completely seperate things."
and I couldn't agree more. I don't believe in such a thing as the Greatest anything so I'll change to Favourite. So who are your favourite songwriters and if you're into it, why. A couple of my suggestions would be Joni Mitchell for her intelligent lyrics and amazing musical understanding and maybe John Hartford just because he had such a good time with writing music. I'm sure there are more obvious choices, what do you think? - Sat, 21 Feb 2004 7:40am

John Hartford, yes! All of his RCA LP's from the 60's have just been re-released on CD, 2 to a disc, and they were my favorite records of last year. He never made a bad record ever. Another favorite "song" writer was Charles Ives. For a combination of great songwriting and great guitar playing I give you Richard Thompson...and Jimi Hendrix. - Sat, 21 Feb 2004 8:11am

Alanis Morissette. why? because she is extremely creative with how she pronounces the words in her songs and how she stresses syllables..... she is far from cliche. her music is both serious and sarcastic, dense with meaningful words that can be interpreted in so many ways. yeah! - Sat, 21 Feb 2004 6:40pm

Yeah, she was definetly one of a kind. Probably why she sold so many fruckin albums. - Sat, 21 Feb 2004 6:51pm

I'm gonna let that whole Alanis mention slide, but I will say...

I was a label-mate of Alanis for over 3yrs, her name does NOT belong in this thread.

Enough said.

Lemmy. How can we argue with songs like "Love me like a reptile" or "I'm gonna steal your face"?
Also, Jimmy Page and whoever did the songwriting for Zepplin. Anyone who is so informed, please let me know (I'm sure someone will, just make sure you're right lest someone pounce on the opportunity to de-fame you). - Tue, 24 Feb 2004 6:04am

Lyrics were usually written by Robert Plant. Jimmy and Robert did most of the song writing. The music was more Jimmy and John Paul. Most zep fans dont know how under-rated John Paul Jones is as a major colaborator in the final product.

My answer to best songwriter is the same as 1/2 of my answer for best guitarist... Frank Zappa

As complicated as you like, or more absurd than you want, this guy didn't write hits at all, but rather a few thousand songs which all deserve to stand the test of time.
