But I'm not sure which, so I'll get an idea of what's out there....

Ideal would be a Korg MS2000 or Yamaha AN1x..... A digital modeling synth with lots of knobs is ideal.... I could get talked into a 70s-80s era analog synth (I would LOVE a Korg Poly-61 in good shape), or an odd-ball digital synth.... I'm not looking for a shitty digital workstation with cheesy soap-opera soundtrack acoutic instruments......

I want to spend $500 or less, but if you have something really sweet, you might be able to talk me into more.....

My e-mail adress is in my profile... Make sure to put something "livevictoria" or "synth"ish in the subject line.... - Wed, 18 Feb 2004 2:00pm

you can get a brand new micro korg (w/vocorder) for $499. apparently it has the same guts as the ms2000. i got one at l&m and i think it's awesome. totally wicked analogue sounds as well as some cheesey digital. you get alot for you money with the micro korg. - Fri, 20 Feb 2004 6:50am

No.... Nice as they may be, I won't buy a synth with mini-keys..... I have to be able to play the thing without feeling like I'm stuck in a cupboard..... - Fri, 20 Feb 2004 10:22am

the mini korg has midi so you can hook it up to a cheap old midi keyboard w/normal size keys thus solving the "cupboard effect" syndrom. - Fri, 20 Feb 2004 11:12am

I'd rather have one synth.... Less to carry around, less cable to go bad and piss me off.... And cheap midi keyboard don't feel nearly as nice as keyboard ona well made synth.....

Plus if I'm getting an analog modeling synth, I want knobs, dammit.... An MS2000 would be ideal for that, but even an AN1X has a decent amount of knobs.....

I don't want a MicroKorg..... Is that ok? - Fri, 20 Feb 2004 12:54pm

I'd like to stay away from the Junos... Because they have such a name, you tend to pey extra for it....

Those are both nice monosynths, though... Unfortunately, I want something with _at least_ 4 note polyphony.....

Luckily it's not a rush.... - Fri, 20 Feb 2004 9:35pm

I found a polysix for 70$ at l&m and now its my main synth. I have a friend with a poly 61 that kind of half works. I'll ask if he wants to sell it. (real easy to fix) - Sat, 21 Feb 2004 6:24am

Mmmmyes, I had a friend with a Poly61 that kinda half works, too, and it's beautiful.... Well for paying to get refurbished into working order..... If he's into selling, could you e-mail me about it?

I would love a Poly6..... I'm really big into old-school Korgs...... - Sat, 21 Feb 2004 7:55am

Don't waste your time with old synths; they are prone to breakdowns and go completely out of tune if the temperature changes even slightly. I grew up with Minimoogs and ARP's and they were a pain in the ass all the way. Save your shekels and buy the 2000; it's a great sounding synth that does almost everything well (the new ones even have a vocoder in them) and it's reliable. We had one in People's War and it was terrific. If you win the lottery Moog has re-released the Minimoog for something like $4000Cdn; great filters and Midi compatable with lots of neat modern features. It's still monophonic, however. - Sat, 21 Feb 2004 8:47am

That's exactly why I want an MS2000 or an AN1x.....

Poly61s are pretty stable, though... They're a digitally controlled, even though their guts are analog..... Analog sound but far more stable... Sadly, no knobs......

UVic has an ancient Buchla that I get to play with for a class, and it's beautiful, but very unstable.... The prof says it's not so much for music as for fingerpainting with sound....... - Sat, 21 Feb 2004 12:04pm

wow! i didn't know any buchla's still existed! I used to goof around with one and it didn't even have a keyboard. it just had a ribbon that you slid you finger back 'n forth on. yeah, i'd suggest the ms2000 for sure (same guts as the minikorg...just a little bit more expensive with normal size keys). - Sat, 21 Feb 2004 4:21pm

Yeah, apparently the Buchla had been in a closet for a few decades when somebody discovered it and put it back together..... They exist, but they're a good 20 grand if you want one for your personal collection.... This one has a keyboard, but it's a touch sensitive thingy rather than an actual white and black keyboard..... And god in heaven, is it ever beautiful.... - Sat, 21 Feb 2004 8:15pm

Hey, you might be able to find a Roland Jupiter 6 around somewhere. I think I've seen them on eBay around $500 US. Shipping would suck, tho' because the whole thing is made of steel...

6 note polyphony w/2 oscilators per note, LOTS of knobs and sliders and led buttons, and a wicked mode that lets you stack all 12 oscilators on a single note w/adjustable detuning!

Yea, I used to own one. Wish I still did! - Sun, 22 Feb 2004 9:56pm

I'll put that on the scout list......

Holy fuck....... A fully detunable 12 oscillator mono synth........ That would sound so evil that your skin would melt....... - Mon, 23 Feb 2004 8:43am

I would give my left nut for the UVic Buchla; as it stands I ended up with their ARP 2600 which is a nifty toy but soooo unstable and the build quality is comparable to Russian stuff. Needless to say it's broken right now... - Wed, 25 Feb 2004 8:50am
