Cooper to sign off as owner of C-FAX
Radio stations sell for $7.5 million to CHUM

http://www.canada.com/victoria/timescolonist/story.asp?id=4EE84493-42F5-4AC4-9F06-F5BC33CEEFD6

And they sold B107.3FM for $500,000, bringing the sale to a grand total of $8 million (actually I just read the actual Times Colonist newspaper, there studio was sold for $500,000). According to the article, the sale hasn't occured yet, awaiting the OK from the CRTC. For those who don't know, CFAX is Victoria's first radio station, broadcasting in or around 1935 (or 1923, not sure). With this sale, this means that CHUM controls half the TV stations and close to a third of radio stations. Is this legal?!? Nuff ranting...

BTW: Did you know that once CFAX is sold, there will be not one station that is run locally, either they get input from Edmonton (Q-100 and The Zone) or Toronto (all the other stations). What wasn't mentioned in the article were stations like CFUV and AM900 (whatever there called). Seemed rather biased. - Tue, 27 Jan 2004 12:43pm

Actually it wasn't biased...it was a story about commercial radio stations, of which CFUV and Village 900 are not. They are campus/community stations, who do not subscribe to the ratings survey and thus do not appear in the ratings. - Thu, 29 Jan 2004 12:33pm

Ah I see now. But doesn't CFUV have to report to the CRTC?!? - Thu, 29 Jan 2004 1:56pm

I believe every station has to report to the CRTC, regardless of whether they're campus/community or commercial. - Thu, 29 Jan 2004 3:31pm

FYI - the CRTC (which governs radio in Canada) and the BBM (the broadcast ratings bureau) are two different things. Everybody is under the law of the government run CRTC but not everybody reports to the BBM because it costs hella money to do so. - Thu, 29 Jan 2004 8:47pm

The program director lives in town, but he has bosses to speak with. Though I think with Q-100/Zone they do more local input, I'm not quite sure. - Thu, 29 Jan 2004 9:33pm
