A lot of people seem to like a song I wrote. I want differing opinions. It's minimalist. Possibly a cross between Joy Division and The White Stripes. The song is called Thud. It can be accessed through http://www.soundclick.com/dtjackson or http://www.myspace.com/dtjacksonmusic.

Tell me what you think of the song and if you are bored, check out some of my other tunes. I primarily want to see if more people are into this certain song. - Tue, 29 Sep 2009 12:46am

I think I can help you out . . . .
You can neither sing nor play drums. It's painful to listen to. I regret the 45 seconds I spent listening to it. I hope it's just a prank, because if this represents the sum total expression of your talent you should stop now. Your friends are too kind and should stop enabling you. You have no talent.
Okay, maybe I'm being a tad harsh, but either get better (a lot better) or quit. Or get even worse to the point you're doing comedy. It's just not bad enough to sound deliberate. - Tue, 29 Sep 2009 12:10pm Edited: Tue, 29 Sep 2009 12:12pm

That's a sobering thought but I will not quit because it's what I enjoy doing. Thanks for taking your time to listen, anyhow. - Tue, 29 Sep 2009 12:32pm

I'd have to agree with superslacks, although I'll try to be a little less severe. Your drumming is really, really weak, and that's apparent from the very first 'fill' at the opening of the song, which is off-rhythm. The fuzzy bass may be why you're drawing comparisons to The White Stripes, but that's where any similarities end. Your voice wanders off pitch sometimes, and the effect that you've put on your vocals are annoying to listen to.

I tried to listen to a few more songs, but, I'm sorry, they're all of a similar caliber to Thud, and I couldn't make it through any. - Tue, 29 Sep 2009 5:11pm

Ok. I'll work on it. Drums are my worst instrument [obviously] so next time I record I'll be a little more picky about what exactly a "good" drum take is. Thanks for giving it a try. It's all in good fun for me. - Wed, 30 Sep 2009 4:30pm

Its obveous you know how a song is written, you obveously do not play drums(it was a good effort though). Get someone who knows how to play drums to even lay-down a simple beat for that song. Add more of that fuzzy-ass bass.
The vocals are another story. Either get some lessons to help; or do what I suggested with the drums. Its not that you're "bad" per-say, it just doesn't really fit with your voice.
The song itself on a raw level has a good beat and backbone; you just need the extra tools that make the difference between hobbist and professional.
Good Luck. - Sat, 3 Oct 2009 11:44am

well put J.. I like most of the songs quite a lot... sure they lack some polish and finish.. but as demos I think they are great. nice and off the wall.. def.not radio friendly.. good stuff.. keep up the good work. - Sat, 3 Oct 2009 1:29pm

Kudos for putting yourself out there and not being too phased by my criticism.

If I could offer ONE positive here it would be this;
Your sonic experimentation reminds me a lot of early Flaming Lips (pre-Transmissions), and they got a lot of flak for sucking too. But they DID persevere and got a lot better and ultimately made some great contributions to music.
Will that be you one day? Personally I doubt it, and that's solely based on the fact that you don't seem to hear how truly awful your recordings are.
My suggestion is;
1) drop ten hits of acid, then
2) listen to "Hear It Is" and "Oh My Gawd" over and over.
3) Then learn to play an instrument for fuck sakes.

Thanks for your comments. I'd love to get a real drummer. I'd actually love to go into some what of a studio, too for that matter. I'm not a drummer. I'm not a singer and I'm not a producer. I'm working on some new recordings that will hopefully not be as crappy. I'm a fan of the Flaming Lips. I'm not looking to be the next anything, though. Just doodling in the basement. Wanking on the guitar. You know how it is. Oh, I can hear the faults of my recordings. Don't worry. And I'll try to do a lot of acid along with your other suggestions. - Sat, 3 Oct 2009 7:07pm

I don't think that song is as bad as everyone else is saying. It's the best song opn your Myspace site...and I think the drums are great. You SHOULD be a drummer. Get a 3 piece kit and learn to pound the shit outa it, standing up...like a fucking caveman. Screw being a professional and don't worry about your skills as a drummer or vocalist...just keep doing what you're doing, but put some fucking energy into it. I can forgive lack of talent and skill if you make up for it in energy and enthusiasm...it's impossible to forgive it if you're pumping out mopey indie garbage though. Do yourself a favor and download a Supercharger record and forget the rest... - Tue, 13 Oct 2009 8:14pm

I'll remember about the energy. I have been doing some "caveman" drumming lately so hopefully that gets put on the interweb soon. Thanks for listening. i will check out some Supercharger. I haven't heard them but the name rings a bell. I will re-organize my myspace based on your suggestions. - Tue, 13 Oct 2009 8:50pm
