| Shaggy User Info... | Don't think this'll happen here? Wrong... It's legal to download from p2p here but it's not legal to host files over p2p. Expect this to be happening up here in the not too distant future. They have the same deals on release of personal info with 3 major carriers up here Rogers, Telus and another I can't recall atm. So if you're unlucky enough to be stuck on telus DSL/dial up out here and are hosting files for p2p access I suggest those doing so cease and desist before you end up a statistic and a few grand poorer. - Fri, 9 Jan 2004 12:15pm | ||

It's a wonder why they don't go after these people. | Shaggy User Info... | The recording industry isn't what's behind it up here, it's the copyright board that's having the pissy fits. So any copyrighted material, which is anything recorded to any type of media, falls under their jurisdiction. So in essence it's actually worse in some ways, than what the RIAA is doing stateside. Indie or mass produced, if it's copyrighted material they can and will come after you although it will still mirror the states in the degree of the offence. i.e. those hosting thousands of files not those who only host couple hundred. Although we have yet to see where exactly the borderline falls with these regulations since they really haven't been enforced yet. Guess it's a waiting game to see what they decide to set those limits at. Personally I'll just host an FTP for folks to access my files when needed like it used to be before P2P became popular. You see my computer has no music "files" in it at all; I possess an old fashioned "record (and CD) collection" and should I desire to share the content of it I simply burn a CD on my burner from whatever it is and Big Brother is none the wiser. And you're right, the copyright Nazis have gotton out of control; at present if I wish to make CD's of my own music for people without the hassle and expense of actually manufacturing silver disc CD's I have to pay about 60 cents to Bryan Adams or Celine Dion or whomever for the privilege of doing it. That's because it's assumed by SOCAN and all the other performance rights assholes that anybody buying CD-R's is going to be violating copyrights right and left. And, as a (reluctant) member of SOCAN despite the fact that these "levies" (can't call them taxes now can we?) have increased the income to SOCAN by a huge amount my SOCAN cheques haven't gone up by any noticeable amount; in fact I got my first ever foreign royalty cheque (after 10 years and about 9 releases on European labels) just last year and it was for less than $20! Sure, today's standards of bootlegging music is far more high tech than it was back in the 80's but I think it's a load of crap that they're going after little high school kids who work their little part-time jobs flippin' burgers at McDicks and happen to like music. The RIAA is just like those bullies on the after-school-specials that you just wanna inflict the same shit onto them as they did to you. The music industry doesn't give a rats ass about us just as long as they get their money! It's bad enough kids today don't respect the music industry, or else we wouldn't be downloading music. But they're suing us?! I'm not willing to spend the money I worked for on a CD that has maybe 1 or 2 songs on it I like! They read something about a prog and it sounds like it's exactly what they need and is free, but don't take the time to check into the background or even scan what they download. And ppl wonder why the majority of viruses and trojans spread like wildfire. If it sounds too good to be true it is. The only safe place to trade files will be usenet and IRC soon.
