Yeah, so this CD came out when over half of my friends were too young to fuck...SO WHAT?!?! Lol...This album came out in 1989 (I first picked it up in 1992 when I was in grade 10,) and it is probably still one of the most classic death metal albums....PERIOD. Although 'Formulas' was definitlely more of a progressive album in some senses, 'Altars' is probably still the most violent!

I've always been more partial to David Vincent's vocals in any case, I thought he had a bit more of a black metal spite/flavor to his death metal vocals...but whatever. The catchy, dissonant licks in 'Visions From the Dark Side,' and the 80's thrash elements in 'Maze of Torment,' this album still presents a straight-up assault and it still actually boggles my mind that it's 17 years old.

And how can one forget 'Chapel of Ghouls'? That, to me is probably still one of the most catchy and crushing songs to date.
"GHOULS....ATTACK THE CHURCH....CRUSH...THE HOLY PRIEST" Fucking classic shit! This is why I accumulate CDs over time! - Thu, 26 Jan 2006 4:36am

I just picked this up yesterday and I have to say, it's one of the best death metal albums of all time. Prior to picking this up the only Morbid Angel album I had was Blessed Are The Sick, which kicks ass too, but Alters Of Madness is equally amazing.

These guys were way ahead of their time musically. Bask in the blackened death!!!
