i just picked up the new strokes and it is fantastic.
its very different from their old records, alot spacier and very varied musical influences. sometimes it sounds like the magnetic fields, then it will be very spacerock/shoegazer like earlier coldplay, and then it will get really black sabbath on you, and then it will be the same old strokes again.
superb. - Tue, 3 Jan 2006 9:14pm

When Is This It came out it really was “it” for me. I think the simplicity of that album is genius, its live and raw feel place it as one of the most energetic and authentic rock albums of its time (in my opinion obviously). If you have seen the Strokes live it is hard to argue with the above statement. Room on Fire was essentially more of the same with regards to feel of the album and production. The bleeding together of the vocal tracks and the drum tracks, along with the distorted guitars stayed constant and the insanely catchy lead guitar lines held the first two albums together. First Impressions of Earth changed the mold. Julian’s vocals no longer bleed into the band as though you heard it live, and although the band sounds better in this album, especially the bass and drums, Julian’s lyrics are weak and paradoxically more prominent, at times they are distracting, even annoying. This is not a knock against the band as I think they are evolving musically as Kris pointed out above, which is understandable and commendable. However, I am not the first one to point out that lyrically The Strokes fail (read pitchforks review, its good, and basically paraphrased above). In my books the band is still tops; Heart in a Cage is by far one of their best songs, and Razorblade is also fantastic. Buy this album as it shows a band struggling to reinvent themselves without breaking the mold that has got them to where they deservingly are, and read the Pitchfork review of the album and it is written much better and articulates what I am trying to say in a less cumbersome manor. - Wed, 4 Jan 2006 2:04pm

i thought this was the first record where julian ACTUALLY sang so i have to disagree that his vocals are poor. i dunno, the strokes were always kind of really simple and fun but never really extremely creative or revolutionary...i think this album shows there creative side magnificently.

i love "vision of division" the most right now. "on the other side" is cool too. - Wed, 4 Jan 2006 6:34pm

This isn't a "Strokes" record... once you get past that its a interesting and inventive record. Shoegazer for sure on some, more true emotion and less bravado. "ask me anything" is the exclamation mark on the "fuck you" that this albums gives to anyone who wanted a third Is this it. - Tue, 10 Jan 2006 3:07pm

This album is just SO enjoyable to listen to, and considering most people like enjoyable things, I'd sugest it to most people. - Tue, 17 Jan 2006 8:17pm
