There was a lot of ash blowing about on the last Steel Hook Prostheses recording that came my way but it still had the power electronics electrodes firmly applied to the vocalist's testicles. The scathing looks hurled around by the project's frothing frontman are still well represented on this Pain Compliance release but instead of getting all in your face while eating from the ashtray, he does so from the back of a moving, circling pickup truck which has to frequently refuel, in and out like post accident conciousness.

The disc sports 11 tracks in all, 56 minutes plus used up by the closing seconds. As mentioned, this is less pure power electronics and more of a stylistic adventure through contemporary industrial realms (from harsher ambient to brutal noise). One moment you will be clawing at the Deathpile style whipping firehose phaser vocals trying to slip a wet tentacle into your ear and then the next you will find yourself in a candlelit basement kneeling in front of a dark, cloaked figure up to some ugly, heathen business.

While lacking the endless thronging quotient, this release reminds me a bit of Inade due to the amount of space if not the entirety of the overall sound. You will for example find melodic, resolving pads warming up in a huge hall, listening to the spooky oration before heading back out into the storm though unlike those delicious new agers (c'mon now, Inade's proto-religion is pretty foofy), the ground here is broken apart into ragged, irregular sections. "Sickness and Plague" for example is like a mud covered brillo pad pressed to the mouth and nose, an all enveloping mass of churning, fibrous noise that is everywhere at once. But immediately following is "Leprosy", a cliff edge fall off into dark ambience (with continued alternation after that). The track layout isn't horrible mind you, it just feels like someone passed the collection plate around instead of there being a premeditated plan, compilation versus album. It will be interesting to see where the project goes from here since it sounds like the earth is shifting under them.

For the price of a pint I would definitely argue that "Light Reflected From A Cold Cutting Table" is a more technically adept and adventerous recording than previous Steel Hook Prosthese outings but I would still have to concede that it is a less unified one as well. Hypnotic as pieces like "Metacarnal Removal Procedure" may be (a fave), the spell gets ripped up and doused with solvents when they get inexplicably followed by harsher noise outbursts like "14th Century Medicine". Cohesion is not something I would accuse this release of. That said, the mastering job is slick and a few moments of playlist arrangement in XMMS (or whatever music app you prefer) would remove most if not all of my track layout concerns since the material itself is both hard and sharp. So think cool compilation instead of alright album.

That means I am keeping it so don't bother asking.

Cheers
