Underground DVDs are generally more difficult to come by than underground albums. I was presented with the chance to review the captured performances of the late Northern Lights 2003 festival from the aforementioned and seemingly aborted DVD. The pace of the festival caught is very up tempo with a heavy saturation of corpse paint. The film crew capture the show very well for an aborted attempt and manage to show each musicians talent as they wail away on their respective instruments. Up to three angles are caught throughout the DVD as the crews of two well positioned and busy camera crew cover the Festival. One overhead view and both ends of the stage are covered by the angles of the film crew. At times, the angles are very intimate and display the musicians hard at work.

Opening the festival is Eclipse Eternal. This corpse painted band opens the Festival in dramatic fashion with a dark recorded introduction and the sacrifice of a Nun. Once all of the drama is completed the band kicks in full force and shreds out evil black metal riffs from within an impenetrable domain of fog.

Following Eclipse Eternal is the epic Death Metal band Divinity. This band is epic and has endurance as it shreds out a lengthy display of Death Metal with its six piece band. As replacements for the cancelled Dead of Winter, Divinity put on an amazing and unexpected performance.

Woods of Ypres, a rather elusive live band to capture, performs next. The film crew captures a snap shot of a passionate performance from this era of the band. For people who would like to see Woods of Ypres’ live show but live hundreds of miles away, this is a great one song snap shot from Against The Seasons.

Vanquished is next and for those counting, the corpse paint count is now up to two. Vanquished play a speedy Black Metal set with some heavy and rhythmic moments to begin the heavy headbanging. The painful screams of the vocalist are captured well as the soundtrack of the DVD is quite good.

Feral Horde is corpse paint count number three as the onslaught of Black Metal continues. The film crew captures the fiery fretwork of the band as they capture Feral Horde’s performance. A rare glimpse of the mosh pit is given and it appears the Festival is filling up and really getting into gear.

Anhkrehg enters after Feral Horde and gives a down and dirty Black Metal thrashing complete with dual vocals from their frontmen. The set is very fast paced complete with the shredding of two songs for the thrashing mad crowd. The lightshow is in full effect as flashing lights have already been established as a feature of each bands performance.

Death Metal band Epoch of Unlight give a passionate vein bursting performance as their vocalist gives his best effort. Epoch of Unlight’s set is accompanied by more flashing lights throughout the two songs captured.

Averse Sefira are the second to last band of the night and wear their Black Metal style on their shiny spike ridden gauntlets. As far as image this band is truly evil, complete by their evil looking instruments. Averse Sefira introduce the song captured on film as their ‘slowest’ at request of concert organizers. The song is hardly plodding and shreds the crowd to pieces.

Finally, the headliners Summon take the stage. The set is extremely energetic and fast paced as Summon puts on a performance that would satisfy anyone in attendance. The film crew captures three songs of the seemingly flawless performance and fans of Summon everywhere would enjoy this DVD.

By the end of the Festival the corpse paint count is up to 5 as the Black Metal onslaught surpasses previously measured count. This DVD captures some very rare performances from bands that are not easy to find. The Northern Lights 2003 DVD is a great capture of from a northern border rallying point. Eyeblister Productions and crew help to give a name and face to some underground performers as they captured some very young bands with very bright futures. - Tue, 2 Aug 2005 3:22pm
