Heaven Ablaze is like the sorrowful soul of Death Metal. Their first album Enlightened by Darkness is a very classy record that will not bring a feeling of revulsion to the stomach of the listener with ear piercing harmonics or string skipping psychotics. The lead guitarist has a style that makes the guitar sing in sorrowful tones. The vocals are handled by a man named Conan who has one of the deepest voices in metal which he uses to full effect in both Death Metal growls and in sorrowful clean tones to duet with the sorrowful tones of the lead guitarist.

Enlightened by Darkness kicks off with a very introspective sounding instrumental which builds up tension in a clean and classy way. With the climax of the instrumental coming as the first track opens up "Victory or Death" is the perfect heart pumper to give the listener a taste of the adrenaline and aggression that also couples itself on the album. The title track has a groove and a tone that will kick in the neck spasms as you start headbanging like a bobble head doll on an offroading 4x4. "Exiled From Heaven" follows and so begins the Christian overtones of Heaven and Hell, Good and Evil, and God and Satan. Following "Exiled From Heaven" and its rythmic breakdown is the soulful "Sin After Sin" which is the perfect song for a midnight bout of introspection. The haunting guitar tone echos softly as Conan sings deeply yet softly for the listener. "Sin After Sin" is the kind of song that will make the hair on your arms stand up like the fur on a Werewolf at midnight as you contemplate ages of humans existing in sin. "A Plague Called God" is begun with the gentle guitar stylings found throughout the album. Once the song's introduction has played through the band kicks it off in high gear with a lightning bolt of a guitar riff. Again the band emphasizes the struggle of Christianity's good and evil as if the music stylings and tones of the band reflect the character of the lyrical content. "1867" is a nod to a very significant year in Canadian history as the constitutional act takes shape beginning a new age for Canada and its people. "Conquest For Supremacy" plays off of the bands soulful leads and frenetic riffs. The second to last track "Black Choirs of Melancholy" returns to a combonation of harsh and soft from both guitar and vocals which emphasizes the directions Heaven Ablaze will take you. Heaven Ablaze concludes Enlightened By Darkness with "Spheres of Decadence" which is a fast paced rowdy number describing the act of temptation.

Enlightened By Darkness is not a rehash of a style or an album that blatantly worships one given band. Instead Enlightened By Darkness displays a merging of styles both musically and lyrically which fans of Death Metal or even steeled fans of Power Metal could enjoy. - Fri, 22 Jul 2005 6:00pm
